Unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford has responded to suggestions that he could be set to move up to the super-welterweight division and take on Tim Tszyu in a bid to become a four-division world champion.

Crawford established himself as boxing’s number one pound-for-pound fighter with a generational stoppage win over Errol Spence Jr back in July, to become the first male multi-divisional four-belt undisputed title-holder.

However, ‘Bud’ has been unable to fight since, after being made to wait for confirmation of Spence’s availability for a second bout following his activation of a rematch clause.

Now it is clear that Spence is unable to fight, as a result of his upcoming cataract surgery, Crawford is free to take on who he pleases, and in an interview with Boxing Social, he admitted that a clash with Tszyu at super-welterweight is one that is definitely on his radar.

Tszyu’s got a tough fight in front of him with Thurman. Hopefully after that fight we can see the next move. We’ve got a few guys on the roster for my next fight – Tszyu/Thurman is one of them.

“Right now, I think that the way that my career is going, I’m looking for the biggest and most lucrative money fights, and the bigger fights are in a higher division. So, I might be moving up.”

As the 36-year-old states, WBO super-welterweight champion Tszyu, has a difficult fight against Thurman to concentrate on.

Although, should Crawford opt to move up in weight, he would become the mandatory challenger for the Aussie’s title and likely force an extremely high-profile showdown, where Tszyu would have the opportunity to make himself a household name around the globe.

Therefore, it is all to play for when Tszyu meets Thurman on March 30th in Las Vegas for PBC’s debut PPV event on Amazon.

Floyd Mayweather sees one welterweight contender as a perfect opponent for Terence Crawford in his next title fight.

Mayweather identified Jaron Ennis as the prime candidate to try and dethrone the pound-for-pound king of boxing.

He took his stance on the grounds of Crawford not being able to land a bout against Canelo Alvarez or a rematch with Errol Spence Jr.

Now seven months removed from his seventh-round knockout of Spence Jr., Mayweather thinks that Crawford and Ennis is next up on the itinerary.

Floyd Mayweather bills Jaron Ennis as tough challenge for Terence Crawford

The Money Team founder sat down for an interview with Fight Hype and gave sound reason for a Crawford and Ennis welterweight contest:

Two Division Champion Says There Is "No Doubt" Crawford Is Better Than Mayweather

“Somebody’s got to give ‘Boots’ the opportunity. It’s been difficult for Terence Crawford to get the Spence rematch done, it’s been difficult to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option is to fight ‘Boots’ Ennis,” Mayweather said.

Crawford has seemingly conquered all of the top competition at 147 pounds except for the Michigan native.

‘Boots’ Ennis possesses the speed, flash, and technical skills to bother Crawford. He’d also be the last major pugilist at 147 pounds for Crawford to potentially best before moving up in weight, which he’s long desired.

Mayweather also drew from his fight with Canelo Alvarez back in 2013. He stated that giving Alvarez a chance helped boost his profile. Win or lose, Ennis is at a juncture in his career where a strong performance against Crawford would similarly pay immeasurable dividends.

The retired legend even threw David Benavidez’s name out there for Crawford to consider at 168 pounds, though a 21-pound jump may be too extreme.

Mayweather’s backing of Ennis would give boxing an anticipated fight, though Crawford is currently in a league of his own, regardless of division.

Terence Crawford landed in Puerto Rico for the Amanda SerranoNina Meinke fight. However, the fight got canceled due to Serrano’s injury, but still, it turned out to be a decent event overall. Crawford made his presence known to the world when he entered the venue. However, that wasn’t the sole purpose of his arrival in Puerto Rico.

After attending the fight in San Juan on Saturday, the next day he flew out to Bayamón. Why? Well, it was to receive an honor from the World Boxing Organization. Even though Crawford doesn’t have any fight lined up as such, he’s still managed to stay relevant and is considered a top-notch modern-day boxer.

Terence Crawford says he “deserved” to receive the great honor

On Sunday, the WBO organized an event in Bayamón, Puerto Rico at the Monterrey Boxing Academy. This is where they celebrated to acknowledge the might of Boxing Pound x Pound fighter Terence Crawford. So, it was specially conducted to honor ‘Bud’ and present him with the ‘Ring of Power’.

As of now, Crawford doesn’t have a finalized opponent for his next fight. He last fought against Errol Spence Jr. back in July 2023. So, it’s been seven months since he’s stepped inside the ring, however, there are many options available for the unified welterweight champion. The WBO President himself shared his vision for Bud’s future.

When is Crawford fighting next?

While fans gear up for the upcoming clash between WBO light middleweight champion Tim Tszyu and veteran Keith Thurman, whispers of a future welterweight showdown are swirling. The WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel dropped a not-so-subtle hint during a press conference.

Terence Crawford might be back in the ring soon. It also brings a new spin to the Tszyu-Thurman fight. Even Tszyu seemed excited about his potential bout against Crawford if he wins against Thurman on March 30. Anyway, Paco remained a bit vague during his interview with FightHype, he said, “I don’t know what we happen but but but we’ll be soon.”

He refrained from revealing anything about the possible prospects for Crawford but still gave a few important hints. Meanwhile, Crawford stated, “We’ve got a few guys on the roster for my next fight – Tszyu/Thurman is one of them.

Terence Crawford’s next move is still unknown.

Terence Crawford has been linked to multiple fights since defeating Errol Spence last year, with the most intriguing one being a bout with Canelo Alvarez.

Crawford became the undisputed world champion at welterweight by beating Spence, but the majority of fights he’s been mentioned in occur in bigger weight classes.

With Crawford atop of most pound-for-pound lists, a fight with Canelo would see two of the sport’s best fighters go at it.

The Nebraska man would have to jump up three weight classes to secure the bout, but he’s got no issue doing that after admitting he’d be open to testing himself against the Mexican icon.

Edgar Berlanga has his sights set on the biggest names at super middleweight following his first win of 2024 on Saturday.

Berlanga made easy work of Padraig McCrory with a knockout in the sixth round of their contest in Orlando, which led to calls from his promoter Eddie Hearn for undisputed 168lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to face Berlanga next.

Errol Spence reportedly elected to undergo cataract surgery as the contracted time limit on his rematch with Terence Crawford has lapsed.

Not exactly a great day for PBC. Following the recent official news that star Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez has split with outfit, it’s now being reported by ESPN’s Mike Coppinger that Terence Crawford is also out of the fold and a promotional free agent.

Following Crawford’s stoppage win over Spence last year in a deal with PBC, a contractual rematch has supposedly been in the works. Many months have since passed, however, and no formal arrangements for rematch have ever been announced. According to Coppinger, Spence opted to have cataract surgery last month — a decision that has now ultimately caused the time to expire on the rematch deal with Crawford.

So now Crawford appears to be free to pursue whatever fights he so chooses with no strings specifically attached to neither a promoter nor network. Crawford had been angling for a fight against Canelo, but Canelo hadn’t been very receptive to the idea as he believes there’s no real upside for him in that kind of matchup.

Terence Crawford has become a free agent as he did not sign a contract with any promotional company, as reported by ESPN.

The former undisputed world champion in two weight divisions had signed a deal with PBC to fight Errol Spence in July 2023. Crawford secured an early victory in that bout. However, the contract was only for one fight with an option for a rematch. However, the window for the second Crawford-Spence fight closed, as Errol was unable to return to the ring earlier due to undergoing surgery on his eye.

Thus, Crawford is currently a free agent. Additionally, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is also without promotional companies, as the Mexican fighter also ended his partnership with PBC.

Terence Crawford claims fight against pound-for-pound star is 'the biggest fight in boxing right now' | DAZN News CA

It’s worth noting that The Ring magazine recently published a fresh P4P (pound-for-pound) ranking independent of weight classes, with American boxer Terence Crawford retaining the top spot.

Since crushing Errol Spence Jr. to become the first undisputed champion in two divisions, Terence Crawford has expressed his desire to build a legacy, part of which involves facing and defeating the undisputed 168-pound champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, in a potentially epic bout.

However, commercial commitments and Alvarez’s personal interests prevented this fight from materializing in September, as he easily defeated a weak Jermall Charlo instead. Canelo claimed it wasn’t the right time to fight Crawford, but according to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, that moment may come in the fall, after facing Jermall Charlo in May.

Meanwhile, this is still speculative, as there’s no official confirmation, and Crawford is one of several fighters vying for an opportunity. To increase pressure for the fight, ‘Bud’ posted a message on his X account confirming his willingness to fight and asserting that he’s the best option.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith responded skeptically to Crawford‘s assertion, cautioning against false hopes.

Recently, this potential fight sparked a heated discussion on ESPN’s First Take, as an eagerly awaited, evenly matched bout between Canelo and WBC mandatory challenger David Benavidez, organized by PBC, has been anticipated since June.

However, the Mexican champion refuses to face Mexican challengers, even though both Benavidez and Jaime Munguia have proven themselves worthy of a spectacular fight, while Crawford would need to move up in weight.

Regardless, Canelo chose neither, opting instead for a straightforward match against Charlo. Concerning Crawford, although he’s a spectacular fighter, experts believe the weight difference would be too much for him.

Oscar De La Hoya demands an opportunity for Munguia

Amidst these speculations, promoter Oscar De La Hoya seized the opportunity to challenge Canelo on a fight against his client, Munguia, who recently demolished Englishman John Ryder.

During a press conference last Saturday, De La Hoya stated that Canelo must defend his belts against the fighter from Tijuana, Mexico, or else he cannot claim to be the ‘King of the super middleweights’.

He insisted the fight should take place on the weekend of September 16, Mexico’s National Day. It has to be noted that De La Hoya didn’t end his relationship with Canelo amicably, potentially complicating negotiations.

By agreeing to face Charlo and Crawford, Canelo Alvarez would have avoided two more undefeated younger Mexicans: Munguia (43-0, 34 KO) and Benavidez (28-0, 24 KO).

The boxing world has its fair share of fashion icons. Speak of Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, and Ryan Garcia. Now, joining this varied list is another bonafide fighter of this generation, Terence Crawford.

This time around, the 2-time undisputed champion, ‘Bud’ Crawford, has hit virality for reasons that have nothing to do with his impeccable boxing skills. A few days ago, he posted a fit-check on his Instagram stories that left fans divided. While some agreed that the outfit had nailed the “slayed” look, others felt it was out of place. In response to the latter set of fans, he clapped back.

On his Twitter, without being specific on what he was talking about, the southpaw came heavily down at those who slammed him for his latest outfit. On X, formerly Twitter, he wrote, “Since when did grown man start caring about what another grown man has on?”

In the screengrab, the Nebraska-based fighter can be seen wearing a red and white, varsity jacket, the length of which resembles that of a trench coat. Along with the atypical jacket, Crawford wore loose-fitted skinny pants and black boots, striking a pose with hands in his much-discussed jacket’s pockets.
