Jannik Sinner won’t win the 2024 French Open, but he will leave Paris as the new world No 1 while Novak Djokovic could slip two places in the ATP Rankings after the tournament.

The 22-year-old Sinner already had one hand on the No 1 ranking before the clay-court Grand Slam got underway as Djokovic had to reach at least the semi-final to deny the Italian top status.

However, with the 24-time Grand Slam forced to withdraw from his quarter-final clash against Casper Ruud due to a knee injury that required surgery, Sinner’s ascend to the top was confirmed on Wednesday.

Reigning Australian Open champion Sinner will have a handy lead after the tournament, but how big the lead is will depend on the outcome of Sunday’s final.

Following his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final, Sinner leads Djokovic by 1,165 in the LIVE Rankings but that lead could be reduced to 745 if the Spaniard wins the French Open.

An Alcaraz victory over Alexader Zverev would see him move ahead of Djokovic in the rankings by the closest of margins as the Spaniard would be on 8,580 points compared to 8,360 points from the Serbian.

The only other change in the top 10 sees Stefanos Tsitsipas slip down two places to No 11 while Alex de Minaur equals his career-high No 9 after reaching the quarter-final.

There are also minimal changes in the rest of the top 20 with Félix Auger-Aliassime climbing three places to No 18 as he made the round of 16.

Jesper de Jong had a storming French Open as he came through qualifying, stunned Jack Draper in five sets in the first round and then took a set off Alcaraz in the second round.

His reward is a possible 30-place jump to a career-high No 146.

Zizou Bergs also came through qualifying and upset 24th seed Alejandro Tabilo before losing in the third round against Grigor Dimitrov. He is set to jump 24 places to No 80 with his previous best No 102.

Frenchman Corentin Moutet was one of the big winners as he climbed up 23 places to No 56 after reaching the fourth round and then threatened to upset second seed Sinner after taking the opening set.

Maximilian Marterer lost to Bergs in the second round, but he will get a 15-place boost.

The Big Losers

Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner: Head-to-head record

Holger Rune won’t suffer a big drop, but his slide down the rankings continues as he will slip to No 15 after losing in the round of 15 – his lowest position since October 2022.

Iga Swiatek is quickly becoming the Queen of Clay.

The 23-year-old Pole won her fourth French Open crown on Saturday, defeating Italian rising star Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1.

The win puts Swiatek as the top-5 winningest women’s player to capture the title in Paris, surpassing Serena Williams, and Monica Seles, among others. The current record holder is Chris Evert with seven.

While Swiatek’s road to winning the 2024 championship was relatively smooth, she had to face one big hurdle in the second round against former Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Swiatek found herself down a match point against hard-hitting Osaka but found a way to take home the win in three tight sets.

“I was almost out of the tournament in the second round so thank you guys for staying behind my back and cheering for me,” Swiatek said after the win. “I also needed to believe that this one was going to be possible. It has been a very emotional tournament so thank you for supporting me.”

Since the Osaka clash, Swiatek has cruised past impressive opponents, only dropping two games in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she downed American Coco Gauff convincingly to book her third straight French Open final.

Here’s just one other indication of how dominant Swiatek is on clay: She added this triumph to those on the slow surface at Madrid and Rome last month, becoming the first woman to win all three events since Serena Williams did it in 2013.

During Saturday’s postmatch ceremony, Swiatek was flanked by a pair of women who each won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Evert said before this French Open that she thinks Swiatek could eventually surpass her women’s record of seven championships in Paris.

Swiatek will carry her momentum to the grass courts of London where she will be the No. 1 seed in singles play at Wimbledon. Her best result to date at the All England Club was in 2023, reaching the quarterfinals. She did, however, win the junior Wimbledon singles title in 2018.

Paolini, on the other hand, also has a lot of momentum to carry into the grass court swing. The world No. 15 will find herself ranked in the top 10 when the new rankings come out on Monday.

But her job at the French Open is not done yet. She will compete in the doubles final with partner Italy’s Sara Errani on Sunday against 2023 U.S. Open singles champion Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova.

Following the doubles final, the men’s singles final will feature Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. The French Open final airs live on NBC and Peacock from Roland Garros in Paris at 9 a.m. ET. The match will also stream on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

A moment of mesmerising skill in set three was the highlight, when Djokovic scampered to the edge of the court to steer a backhand winner around the net post before imploring the Philippe Chatrier crowd to raise the roof in recognition.

“I haven’t had too many shots like this in my life. I don’t know if I’ve ever done that,” Djokovic said in The Cube on Eurosport’s French Open coverage.
“That’s why I was asking the crowd to cheer a little bit louder. I don’t recall ever doing it and I always envied the players who have done it at least once in their career.
“Playing around the post is really cool, it’s a great highlight. So when I saw his drop shot moving away from the doubles line, I thought this was my chance, and it was pretty good.”

Djokovic has had a difficult 2024 season so far by his high standards and arrived at Roland-Garros without a single title to his name and with recent shock defeats in Rome and Geneva fresh in the memory.
The 24-time major winner also split with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic at the end of March and hasn’t yet replaced him full-time.

Serena Williams has hinted at a comeback to tennis 18 months after “evolving away from tennis”.

In a post on social media, the 42-year-old admitted she is “ready to hit some balls again”.

Although Serena did not confirm the 2022 US Open as her farewell event, she was given lavish tributes before each match in New York.

She then waved an emotional goodbye after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.

Also, while promoting her investment company in October 2022, Serena insisted: “I am not retired. The chances (of a return) are very high. You can come to my house, I have a court.”

Novak Djokovic vs. Pierre-Hugues Herbert

“Low expectations but high hopes” is how Djokovic describes his mindset as he tries to defend his title at Roland Garros. The 37-year-old hasn’t had a good season by his standards. For the first time in years, he comes to Paris without a title; his coaching team is unsettled; and his last two defeats, in Rome and Geneva, were lackluster efforts at best.

But as Alexander Zverev said recently, Djokovic “will be at his best” in Paris. “That’s just the way it is.” It’s certainly hard to argue with his record at majors. Djokovic’s hopes may high in part because his old nemesis at this event, Rafael Nadal, has already made his exit.

Following defeat, Djokovic confirms concerns - Tennis Majors

Djokovic will start with a night match in Chatrier against Herbert, a 33-year-old doubles specialist from France. Even with the crowd firmly in favor of Herbert, though, he probably won’t scare Djokovic. PHM is ranked 142nd now, and hasn’t qualified for an ATP main draw so far this year. His trademark is his acrobatic service motion, and the arcing kick that it produces. Even against a Djokovic in relative disarray, though, Herbert will need a lot more than that on Tuesday. Winner: Djokovic

Novak Djokovic’s final preparation for the French Open ended when he lost in the Geneva Open semi-finals to Czech world number 44 Tomas Machac.

World number one Djokovic, who turned 37 this week, was beaten 6-4 0-6 6-1.

The Serb has not reached a final in 2024 before starting the defence of his French Open crown.

The clay-court Grand Slam tournament starts at Roland Garros on Sunday.

Djokovic, who has won a men’s record 24 major titles, entered Geneva to build up court time after a difficult start to the season by his standards.

Serena Williams has changed the face of female tennis in more ways than one.

The all-time great dominated the sport throughout her career, driving the women’s’ game into an new era of athleticism, and she was never afraid to push the boundaries when it came to fashion.

And this was never more the case than at the 2018 French Open, when Williams stunned fans by wearing a black catsuit as she won her first Grand Slam match since giving birth.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion said at the time that the outfit made her feel like a ‘warrior’, with it drawing comparisons to the Marvel film Black Panther released that year.

“If I can do it, so can you. Love you all!!”

But this did not go down well with all in the sport.

Later that summer, French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli announced that the tournament would be introducing a dress code to ban similar looks to the tennis legend’s.

Guidicelli said in an interview with Tennis Magazine: “I think we sometimes went too far.

“The combination of Serena this year, for example, it will no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

“The ‘respect’ that’s needed is for the exceptional talent ⁦Serena Williams brings to the game. Criticising what she wears to work is where the true disrespect lies.”

The unpopular decision even prompted the WTA to announce a rule change of their own that year, permitting players to wear leggings and by extension, catsuits.

The 42-year-old recently reflected on the famous look in an interview with CNN Sports, where she admitted she could not have foreseen the drama that would later unfold.
