Tyson Fury has warned Oleksandr Usyk that while the Ukrainian might have defeated Anthony Joshua he won’t be able to overcome an “elite, big” heavyweight.

Fury, the WBC champion, meets the unified WBA, WBO, and IBF titlist Usyk in the undisputed heavyweight championship fight on May 18,

Fury paid due respect to his opponent at a press conference in his hometown of Morecambe.

“It’s not personal. It’s strictly business for both fighters. There’s a lot of stuff on the line, but I don’t hate him,” Fury said of Usyk.

“I respect him as a man, as a fighter.

“Anyone would have to respect the man’s achievements. He’s unified heavyweight champion, undisputed cruiserweight champion,” he added.

But Fury’s confidence is rock solid that he will prevail in their May 18 clash: “I’m the best. I’m just defending my ‘best-ness’ against him,” he declared.

He is determined to leave his mark on the sport’s history and crown himself as, indisputably, the best heavyweight in the world next month.

“I’ve studied this game all my life. This is my time, my destiny, my era, and my generation,” he said.

Tyson Fury, the reigning WBC heavyweight champion, has asserted his dominance ahead of his highly anticipated clash with Oleksandr Usyk, declaring, “It’s my time, my destiny, my era, and my generation.”

Fury’s upcoming bout with Usyk, scheduled for May 18th in Saudi Arabia, is poised to be the first undisputed world heavyweight showdown of the century. Usyk, the reigning WBA, IBF, and WBO title-holder, poses a formidable challenge for Fury, having transitioned from unified cruiserweight champion to heavyweight contender in 2019.

Drawing on his extensive knowledge of boxing history, Fury highlighted the challenges faced by cruiserweights when stepping up to compete against larger opponents in the heavyweight division. “When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, usually they get found wanting,” Fury remarked. “You can beat the average big ones, but you can’t beat the elite big ones, because size really matters.”

Fury’s confidence in his ability to overcome Usyk stems from his belief in the significance of weight divisions in boxing. He anticipates that Usyk will struggle against him due to the size disparity, echoing sentiments expressed in a previous statement regarding the limitations of cruiserweights competing against elite heavyweights.

Oleksandr Usyk appears to have bulked up to face Tyson Fury.

The Ukrainian has been pictured in his training camp as he prepares to take on the ‘Gypsy King’ for a chance to become undisputed champion, the first since Lennox Lewis achieved the feat in 1999.

Usyk posted footage on a speed ball, showing off both his fast hands and impressive shape, where he looks significantly bulkier than in previous appearances on social media.

And fans were quick to react, with one writing: “Usyk is always in shape, but he looks like he’s ready to fight right now!”

Another agreed: “Looks in great shape, and his arms seem a lot more muscular than normal.

One fan even questioned: “Has Usyk ever looked in better shape?”

A comment joked: “Looking hench or maybe it’s the haircut.”

One even predicted: “You’re looking at undisputed champion right here, I’ve said it from the start.

“Usyk will bully him with his hand speed and better footwork.”

Although some were less optimistic, with a fan writing: “Things to note – Bag high up to imitate Fury’s head. Punching up reduces power. Usyk has got no power.”

A viewer was more impressed with his skills, concluding: “Absolutely amazing skills while looking at the camera, he only missed the ball once!”

The Ukrainian previously reigned as undisputed cruiserweight world champion, before piling on weight to compete in the blue-riband division.

He has made a huge impression despite being smaller in size, beating Derek Chisora, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois since stepping up.

But the size difference to 6ft 9ins Fury could be huge on the night, given the unified champion stands six inches smaller at 6ft 3ins.

Fury has regularly aimed critical jibes at Usyk for his size, but many are expecting the Ukrainian to possess the superior boxing skills on the night.

The Briton also himself looks in brilliant shape, and has shown off a remarkable transformation since narrowly beating Francis Ngannou in October 2023.

The British boxing legend anticipates Usyk will get a read on Fury early, nullify him on the inside and then outwork him over the distance.

However, McKenzie, a former three-weight world champion and veteran of 46 professional fights (39-7), expects Usyk’s boxing IQ to shine through.

“Usyk wins, I hate to pour cold water on anyone’s parade but for me, Usyk wins because he’s a much more complete all-round fighter,” he told talkSPORT Fight Night on Saturday.

“I don’t think Fury has boxed anyone like him and Usyk will be so up for this fight and a good Oleksandr Usyk probably hold his own with just about any heavyweight that’s ever lived…

“His ring IQ, he’s very intellectual, very sensible, he punches perfectly, he times himself perfectly, he can nullify the bigger guys’ size.

Roy Jones Jr insists Oleksandr Usyk will have to make Tyson Fury respect his power if he hopes to beat him.

The Ukrainian slickster is not known for being a massive puncher, particularly at heavyweight, where he is on the smaller end of the spectrum.

At cruiserweight, he racked up a few impressive stoppages, most notably his vicious knockout of Tony Bellew in 2018.

But since moving up in weight the majority of his fights have gone the distance, barring Chazz Witherspoon retiring on his stool and Daniel Dubois seeing out a count on his knee.

Instead, Usyk has won most of his fights by using his superior speed and fundamentals to thoroughly outbox his opposition.

However, Jones Jr anticipates this won’t be enough to defeat Fury when they duke it out for the undisputed heavyweight crown on May 18.

“Usyk is a great tactician but he’s not all that explosive,” Jones Jr told Darren Bent and Troy Deeney on talkSPORT Drive on Thursday afternoon.

“If he was explosive it would be a problem. When you are smaller coming up to the big guys you’ve got to bring explosives to the ring or they won’t respect you.

Tyson Fury has been told he risks being disqualified during his much-anticipated fight against Oleksandr Usyk.

Originally, the pair were due to fight in February but the bout was called off after Fury suffered a cut above the eye during a sparring session.

As a result, the fight was rescheduled to take place on May 18 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ahead of the fight, Fury has been warned by his former opponent Steve Cunningham that he could be disqualified against Usyk.

Tyson Fury to fight Oleksandr Usyk for undisputed heavyweight title

He told World Boxing News: “I believe Ngannou only looked as good as he did fighting Fury because Fury didn’t take fighting an MMA guy seriously. Ngannou does have unbelievable power, though. He landed a clean shot on Fury, who wasn’t in shape at all. I was surprised at that but not at the fact that Fury got up and outpointed him.

“I think Usyk wins by decision against Fury. Either that or Fury gets disqualified. Fury’s going to have to lean and lay all over Usyk to tire him down as he does usually. I think the referee will be alerted to this before the fight [by team Usyk] and Fury will lose points.”

It has been expected that if Fury manages to beat Usyk, a fight against fellow Brit Anthony Joshua could finally happen.

Speaking about a potential bout with Joshua, Fury previously said: “I’m sure that Oleksandr Usyk will have something to say about that given he beat him twice.

“For the actual real boxing, it’s me and Usyk who fight for the undisputed heavyweight world championship of the world. I had a s*** performance against Ngannou, that’s what a boxer should have done with him, but if he fights next year it’ll be a different game.”

Tyson Fury will fight Oleksandr Usyk with all the heavyweight titles on the line – but one of the Ukrainian’s previous opponents is concerned for the ‘Gypsy King’

Tony Bellew has shared his concerns for Tyson Fury ahead of his fight with Oleksandr Usyk. The pair are due to face off in May in a historic battle with all the heavyweight title belts on the line.

Both Usyk and the ‘Gypsy King’ will also put their undefeated records on the line at the Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia. As the boxing world prepares for this titanic bout, Bellew, who retired in 2018, is confident that Usyk, the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO champion, will claim victory.

“On the technical side of things, Tyson Fury has always struggled with smaller movers and is horrendous when it comes to counter-punchers,” Bellew told Spinbet. “If you go on the backfoot against Fury, he is lost.” Despite being the smaller and shorter man in the fight, Bellew thinks Usyk has the ideal style to cause Fury problems.

SecondsOut Boxing News - Main News - Tyson Fury vs Olekandr Usyk - Will they, won't they?

Bellew, who ended his career with a defeat to Usyk, used Francis Ngannou as an example to illustrate how the 35-year-old could struggle. When competing in his very first boxing match in October 2023, the Cameroonian dropped Fury and gave him problems throughout their encounter.

Bellew then elaborated on the keys to Ngannou’s performance which he thinks Usyk can utilise to end Fury’s undefeated streak. “A complete boxing novice Francis Ngannou went on the backfoot against Fury and caused him all kinds of problems,” he added. And I mean a raw, complete novice in Francis Ngannou.

This fight was originally scheduled for February, but the WBC Heavyweight champion pulled out after sustaining a nasty cut above his eye while sparring. Now Krassyuk is unsure it will happen this time, let alone a rematch which is part of the contract.

Boxing: Report: Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to fight in February 2023 | Marca

“Theoretically, the rematch should happen before the end of 2024,” he told World Boxing News. “And after he loses to Usyk in the first bout, you cannot predict his behaviour at all.

“I say this, but I have no guarantee that the first fight ever takes place. The man has withdrawn four times in a row already. We have even decided to stop all the jokes and criticisms towards Luke to support his confidence. So, if there is anything else we can do to help him get in the ring with Usyk, we are ready to do that.”

Ben Davison would prefer Anthony Joshua enter a third fight with Oleksandr Usyk over a first with Tyson Fury.

Under Davison’s tutelage, following impressive stoppage victories over Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou – opponents Fury struggled with – Joshua has returned to contention to fight for a world heavyweight title having agreed to box the winner of this year’s two undisputed title fights between Usyk and Fury.

Davison was similarly influential in Fury’s return from retirement when he guided him into the risky fight with Deontay Wilder that revived his career, and having since split from the WBC heavyweight champion and more recently been recruited by Joshua, he is potentially on course to confront an opponent he considers a friend.

Fury, at 35 one year older than Joshua, continues to speak positively about Davison’s qualities. It is also tempting to believe that Joshua partly wanted to be trained by him because he already had a future date with Fury in mind.

Davison, however, having enhanced his reputation with Fury and Joshua more than any other fighter, believes that after having helped Joshua rediscover his confidence – he didn’t go as far as to say he wanted Usyk to beat Fury – it is a fight with Usyk, twice victorious over Joshua, he would relish most.

“That’s the fight that we’d love to do,” the trainer said. “We’d love to get a chance to help Joshua put that right.

“I don’t know [if it’s also the fight Joshua wants most]. I don’t think he’s fussed. I think he’s a boxer; he gets matched and he’s happy to kick some a*** either way.

“We’re miles away from it at the minute, because Tyson’s got to fight Usyk – potentially a rematch – so, yeah, we’re still steps away from that. We’ll see [how I feel about preparing Joshua for Fury]. When the time comes around, if the time comes around, we’ll see.

“This deal – obstacle – is in the way for that fight to even be made. To be honest, I still feel like I haven’t managed to recover since that [Joshua-Ngannou] fight. So I haven’t thought about it.”

Joshua had been inactive for nine months the first time he fought Usyk – who will be 37 when in May in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia he fights Fury – and 11 months ahead of their rematch in August 2022.

“There was massive gaps between the first Usyk fight; the second Usyk fight,” Davison continued. “The activity is key, and I think that’s helped him. Get back-to-back training camps; develop his skills. He spent a lot of time with a lot of different trainers; he’s developed other areas of his game, and that’s played a part in him finally getting to where he’s got to.

“It’s not us, it’s [Joshua who deserves the credit for his improved performances]. All we’ve done is just help him. He’s a two-time unified heavyweight champion of the world – an Olympic gold medallist. All we’ve done is help him select the right tools for the job. That’s him. He’s gone out there and done it.

Anthony Joshua is chasing big fights.

Carl Frampton has urged Anthony Joshua to target a fight with Filip Hrgovic as he waits for the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk series to play out.

Joshua has spent the last year rebuilding following two losses to Usyk and his impressive form has seen him launch himself back into the title picture.

Earlier this month, Joshua wasted little time dispatching Francis Ngannou as he stopped the former UFC superstar in two rounds.

It was thought that Joshua could challenge the winner of Fury vs. Usyk, but with that bout containing rematch stipulations, Frampton has suggested that Joshua looks in a different direction.

“I think that it’s a very, very winnable fight for AJ. I’d have him as a strong favourite in that fight.

“It keeps a bit of momentum going while he’s waiting. He can’t wait on Usyk and Fury. So, I think take a fight, and hopefully get the winner after.”
