British fighter offered an impressive display of clinical efficiency in Riyadh but these events should not happen

In the early hours of Saturday morning in Riyadh it was totally expected and yet still strangely alarming. Joshua had so much time he could plant his feet, take aim and unleash a ferocious overhand right that stuck Ngannou so forcefully on his temple that he began slipping into unconsciousness as he slumped to the canvas. Within seconds, he was stretched flat on his back. The referee, waving his left arm frantically to signal the fight was over in the second round, ran to his rescue.

Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou: Briton delivers devastating blow as he brutally knocks out UFC star in second round | CNN

Boxing thrives on such graphic violence, which means that, even for those of us who somehow still love the courage, resolve and skill of its fighters, it is ultimately a bleak and often distressing business. Joshua, who has been stopped shockingly by Andy Ruiz Jr and dismantled twice by Oleksandr Usyk, understands these harsh truths. He did not roar or celebrate Ngannou’s demise by climbing the ropes. Instead, Joshua looked away from his stricken opponent and walked quietly across to his new trainer, Ben Davison, who tapped his glove in acknowledgment of a brutal job done well.

They were right not to indulge in jubilation. Joshua did his work with clinical efficiency while showing some of the spite that all great heavyweights carry inside. Mike Tyson used to produce these stoical reactions better than any other fighter. After he had obliterated yet another hapless opponent, Tyson would trudge around the ring with a contemptuous lack of surprise. A sombre expression reflected his certainty the outcome had always been obvious. It was chilling, intimidating and built the myth of Iron Mike.

But Tyson was lost in a dark maze. He unravelled outside the ring and between the ropes. Joshua, a student of heavyweight boxing, has immersed himself in these compelling yet quietly tragic stories – and lived through the pain of his own defeats.

Joshua also knew, as long as he prepared hard and fought with calm intent, he would blow Ngannou away. He has been boxing professionally for 10 years and 10 months, while it is just over four months since Ngannou’s pro debut.

Boxing logic had been skewed on that strange night last October when, in his first fight as a boxer, Ngannou stunned Tyson Fury by dropping him in the third round. Fury got up and shaded a split-decision victory. Ngannou performed admirably and Fury had been lethargic and bereft of his usual cascade of trickery.

Number one' Joshua defeats Ngannou with brutal second-round KO

It turned out to be a mirage as Joshua crushed Ngannou in the desert of Saudi Arabia. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, resorted to the exaggeration that Joshua shunned. “You’re looking at the baddest man on the planet,” Hearn said, stealing one of Tyson’s old nicknames as he pointed to Joshua. “He’s the best heavyweight in the world and I can’t wait for him to beat Tyson Fury.”

Hearn’s statement was almost as absurd as the very idea of these crossover fights. Fury, of all people, spoke with composed good sense as he responded to Hearn’s bombast: “I’m sure Oleksandr Usyk will have something to say about that, considering that he beat [Joshua] twice. It’s me and Usyk who fight for the No 1 and No 2 positions and the undisputed championship of the world [in May]. I had a shit performance against Ngannou. I’ve never said anything different. Joshua knocked him out and that’s what a boxer should’ve done.”

Usyk holds the IBF, WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles, while Fury retains his WBC belt. Their compelling bout is the real deal and should confirm boxing’s first undisputed world heavyweight champion of the 21st century. The last man to claim that exalted status, in 1999, was Lennox Lewis, another great fighter who added to the ruin of Tyson.

It has been a week in which Joshua restored some order and clarity to boxing – by underlining the dangerous folly of such crossover bouts. They should not be allowed because lasting damage may yet happen.

Of course, as this is boxing, a grim announcement was made the day before Joshua faced Ngannou. On 20 July, Jake Paul, the YouTube influencer turned boxer, will fight Tyson in “a blockbuster exhibition” at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It is predicted that the stunt of a bout, to be streamed live on Netflix, will draw a crowd of 80,000 and generate more than $100m. Tyson will have just turned 58.

For all the hard-edged realism Joshua doled out just before 3.30am on Saturday morning, the madhouse of boxing roars on. But, at the dead of night, we were reminded that only real boxers should occupy such perilous terrain.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is poking fun at Francis Ngannou‘s excuse for his knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua.

Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, suffered a second-round knockout against Joshua in Saudi Arabia earlier this month.

Despite putting up a strong fight in the first round, Ngannou succumbed to Anthony Joshua’s powerful punches, ending the bout swiftly.

In an interview on The MMA Hour, Ngannou suggested that the late-night timing of the fight in Riyadh negatively impacted his final preparations.

“Listen, I think we both fight at 3 am,” Ngannou told The MMA Hour.

“It’s not like I fought at 3 am and he fought at like midnight or something. We both fought at 3 am.

He claimed that he had been instructed to arrive at the Kingdom Arena much earlier than Joshua, leaving him waiting backstage for an extended period and feeling fatigued.

“What I think happened is that they get me to the arena very early. Like my pickup time was 10.30pm to go to the arena. And then when we get to the arena, they tell us that we are scheduled around 1.45am.

“Anthony Joshua came to the locker room around 1am and we were fighting the same time.

“But for the fight, at least two hours beforehand. They did this kind of trick to get me tired.

“I didn’t know how important that was, until the fight day that I had to get there two hours before.”

However, Hearn dismissed Ngannou’s explanation, implying that the knockout might still be affecting him mentally.

Ngannou’s future in combat sports remains uncertain, with rumours suggesting a potential return to MMA. The Cameroonian recently signed a deal with the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and is scheduled to face Renan Ferreira in his next bout.

After dropping Tyson Fury to the canvas in October 2023, Francis Ngannou, is hoping to set another upset when he takes on Anthony Joshua, in his second professional boxing bout in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

Having lost controversially to Tyson Fury in his debut, Ngannou will once again aim to prove that he belongs when he takes on Joshua in Riyadh, with AJ, one of the world’s best, a pretty big target.

The 34-year-old Nigeria-born British boxer is the favourite to get the job done and set up a potential world title bout against Filip Hrgovic, or either Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk after their undisputed fight in May.

But having given Fury a major scare, in a fight many believed the 37-year0old Cameroonian should have won on points, Ngannou is confident he can take Joshua to the canvas.

“We were doing the promo and he was very chilled, very relaxed,” Ngannou said.

“I asked him if he was OK because he looked a little nervous or something because I was OK. I had no problems. I was just talking around, laughing.

“I think we are both professional enough to know what we have to do to get to where we want to go.”

While Ngannou hit the pads during his public workout on Wednesday, Joshua used his slot to briefly do some shadow boxing before leaning on the ropes and watching on after inviting a group of young Saudi Arabian boxers into the ring.

Asked why he had decided against entertaining the fans in attendance, Joshua said: “I’m here to fight.

“I was not acknowledging that with all due respect, I’m here to fight.”

But Joshua’s trainer Ben Davison, having watched Ngannou’s workout from ringside, revealed his confidence that AJ will get the job done on Friday.

“We won’t go in there looking for it, forcing it,” Davison responded when quizzed on whether Joshua was seeking a knockout.

“I’m convinced that [Ngannou] won’t be able to do the rounds with the way that AJ is going to approach the fight.

Amir Khan, the former unified light-welterweight world champion, has cautioned two-time WBA, WBO, and IBF champion Anthony Joshua ahead of his non-title heavyweight fight against former UFC champion Francis Ngannou.

The fight is set to take place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 8.

Khan, who retired after his defeat to Kell Brook in their long-awaited showdown two years back, warns Joshua about the formidable challenge posed by Ngannou.

Ngannou shocked many boxing pundits with his ability when he faced WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in their 10-round non-title fight at Boulevard Hall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last October. The 37-year-old Cameroonian dropped Fury with a powerful left hook in the third round and only lost by split decision by scores of 95-94, 94-95 and 93-96.

“I think Joshua is a very smart fighter,” Khan said to All Out Fighting. “It will still be a hard fight because you’ve got to understand, Ngannou got more confidence going into this fight and he thinks he can hurt and knock out Joshua.

Boxing: Amir Khan makes Anthony Joshua feelings clear ahead of Francis Ngannou fight - 'Not to sound disrespectful'

“Ngannou says that Joshua got a weak chin, so he’s going to go for that really and try to throw those big bombs. If he connects, who knows what might happen? One thing about the heavyweight division is that if one punch lands it can change a fight.

“[Tyson Fury’s] one hard fighter to hit clean. So many top guys have tried to knock him out, knock him down or hurt him. Not to sound disrespectful – I like Joshua, I think he’s a great fighter – but I think he’s easier to hit than Fury.

“The way people look at boxing now after that fight [Ngannou had] with Fury is that boxers are a little bit weaker than MMA fighters. This is where Joshua needs to show them that boxers are not weaker, boxers are better and stronger.”

Khan isn’t the only one who thinks this is a risky fight for Joshua, but one that he should win. The 34-year-old Brit even received support from an MMA legend.

“I’m rooting for Francis to win only because of his story, how far he has come in life and him being a fellow mixed martial artist,” reigning UFC heavyweight champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones said during the broadcast of the ‘PFL vs Bellator: Champs’ event on the weekend.

Many observers criticized Tyson Fury for not respecting Francis Ngannou enough during their boxing bout last October. Anthony Joshua, the Cameroonian’s next opponent, is determined not to repeat the same mistake. The Nigerian-born Briton has already lost two fights to Andy Ruiz and Olexandr Usyk when he was considered the favorite.
