Mike Tyson will step back in the ring this summer – 19 years after his last pro fight – to face YouTuber-turned boxer Jake Paul.

In 2005, ‘Iron Mike’, one of the most feared heavyweights in history, bid a sad farewell to the sport as he quit on his stool against the unheralded Kevin McBride in Washington D.C.

And even as his career was coming to an end, SHOWTIME commentator Steve Albert’s introduction to their pay-per-view offering on June 11, 2005, showed Tyson still had his aura that had seen him storm through the heavyweight division in the 1980s and earn the nickname the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’.

“Despite the prevailing opinion that Mike Tyson is shot, unfocused and undisciplined, this has elements of a short, painful night for Kevin McBride,” said Albert.

He was 38 years old, had been knocked out by Britain’s Danny Williams in his last fight and spent 11 months out of the ring since, but the Tyson phenomenon lived on regardless.

A crowd of 20,000 packed out the MCI Arena to witness the former undisputed heavyweight world champion in action, fully believing their hero would roll back the clock to produce another scintillating KO.

Irish journeyman McBride was the opponent selected for the occasion – his record not telling the full story.

The 32-year-old had accumulated his 32 wins by facing a host of lower-tier fighters and then suffered defeats whenever he stepped up in class.

McBride was even beaten by Michael Murray, a man who ended his career losing 17 of his last 18 fights, with the only bout he won being the one against McBride.

While the Irishman is said to have earned $150,000 for the contest, Tyson was reportedly paid $5million – most of which went to his ex-wife and creditors.

However, Tyson was not the most iconic sporting figure at the MCI Arena that night.

After arriving at the venue, Tyson received a visit in his dressing room from the ‘Greatest Of All Time’ himself, Muhammad Ali.

Paul stated, “So Conor, you’re saying the interest is low for the fight, but the last fight you announced, there was a thousand articles written in a multi-day span, people talking about your last fight.”

“In that same multiple-day span, there were ten thousand articles written about this. No fight ever has done these numbers in terms of face-off views and Instagram reels. Just on our main pages alone, it’s like 50 or 60 million Instagram views on both of our posts.”

The fight is scheduled to take place on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Former heavyweight world champion Tyson will be 58 by then, and will enter the ring for the first time since he fought Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition fight in November 2020.

It will be his first appearance since his valiant showing against Tyson Fury, where he dropped the WBC title holder en route to losing a controversial decision.

Ngannou will look to get off the mark in the world of boxing following his high-profile UFC departure.

‘The Predator’ drafted in ‘Iron’ Mike for his training camp ahead of facing Fury last October and was ringside for their Riyadh clash.

But he has dropped the boxing icon from his camp ahead of his fight against Joshua.

“To be honest with this fight since my training was here [Riyadh], we didn’t get Mike Tyson here,” revealed Ngannou.

“He came in like three times [for Fury], he was more advising.

“He would come and watch our training, he would be there to give advice.”

Tyson helped Ngannou prepare for his boxing debut, with the fighter’s trainer, Dewey Cooper, explaining his involvement for this camp.

“Well, Mike is his family to us,” he said. “Mike and I have been friends since the 90s. He used to come to my fights and show me support and love, and Francis talked about this over four years ago. Before Francis won the heavyweight championship in the UFC, Mike Tyson was his inspiration to want to do this boxing thing.

“So, Francis and Mike Tyson have a very special relationship. So, even if Mike isn’t here, him and Francis talk, his motivation is there one way or another. “

He almost beat Fury in his last fight as former UFC fighter Dan Hardy reckons ‘The Predator’ will come out victorious against Joshua.

“I’m going with Ngannou genuinely,” said Hardy.

“I picked Fury in the last one. I felt Fury was going to be able to catch him fifth or sixth round once he started to get tired. But this for me is a much better match up for Ngannou.

“I feel like AJ’s easier to hit, easier to rattle psychologically and I feel like because of the unknown commodity of Francis Ngannou there’s going to be a shock to the system.”

A win over Joshua could see Ngannou secure a undisputed showdown against the winner of Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, which goes down on May 18.

Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield’s infamous 1997 face-off in Las Vegas remains one of the most unforgettable matches in boxing history. It must have been something else to experience the moment firsthand; just ask Jeff Goldblum. The Emmy-winning actor stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Feb. 21 and revealed he was sitting in the audience that night, just a few feet from where the violence took place.

Kimmel calls it “the craziest sporting event in history,” and with good reason. Meanwhile, Tyson and Holyfield have since buried the hatchet and Holyfield’s ears have healed.

Mike Tyson’s first boxing match after he was released from prison in 1995 was against Peter McNeeley – a fight the former world champion easily won.

Fans think they noticed what looked like a smartphone in the crowd when Mike Tyson fought Peter McNeeley in 1995. In his first fight after being released from prison, the former World Heavyweight champion entered Las Vegas’ MGM Grand 29 years ago looking to prove he was still an elite boxer.

As he made short work of McNeeley, the live broadcast captured a fan in the crowd who held up a device that looked like a modern phone, to record the action. The gadget even had black spots on it, which are in similar positions to the camera lenses on the phones we see today.

This led fans on social media to spark a ‘time traveller theory’, as they tried to guess what the fan held to document the boxing match. However, Les Trent, the presenter of the Inside Edition YouTube channel, dismissed that theory and revealed the device used was not a smartphone.

“We did some digging and found out the device in the video is not a smartphone at all,” he explained. “It’s an early version of a camcorder called a Dycam Logitech. So for the time being, it looks like we’ll have to leave time travel to the movies.”

Fans in the comments were still in disbelief as one said: “That camera doesn’t look like what the guy is holding at all.” Another added: “Doesn’t look like the same device to me,” while this user posted: “That’s a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.” The device used to record his fight was the last thing on Tyson’s mind as he annihilated McNeeley in the first round.

His heavy blows knocked the now 55-year-old to the ground twice within the first two minutes of the contest. Worried for McNeeley’s health, the boxer’s former manager Vinnie Vecchione stepped in to protect him and got his client disqualified. That was just the second loss of his career at the time. McNeeley suffered five more defeats before hanging up his gloves in 2001.

“In the history of Mike Tyson’s career, the uppercut was always his best punch and he caught me with it on the chin — and I went down on my face. I got to like the count of six or seven and I was confused. And when Vinnie jumped into the ring and pushed me towards the corner, I thought, ‘Oh, the round’s over and he’s gonna sit me on the stool’.
