Floyd Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017 undefeated after giving Olympic boxing lessons to several fighters including Canelo Alvarez, however, rumor has it that ‘Money’ is extremely upset with his prodigy Gervonta Davis.

Gervonta is following the Mayweather school of bragging about his boxing talent and power, this apparently went to his head, as in an interview, Tank said he would beat Mayweather.

As expected, Mayweather could not sit idly by, and rumor has it that Mayweather may be coming back from retirement just to prove that he is the ultimate authority in his category in professional boxing.

While it is highly unlikely that Mayweather and Davis will face each other, given their significant age difference and Mayweather‘s retirement from professional boxing in August 2017, the former five-weight world champion has continued to participate in exhibition bouts and is considered active in the sport.

His most recent exhibition bout was in June 2023 against John Gotti III, which ended in chaos when Gotti was disqualified, triggering a pitched battle in the ring.

The Mayweather-Davis feud

The relationship between Mayweather and Davis began to deteriorate after Davis left Mayweather Promotions, the company that guided him to his first world championship in 2017 and collaborate exclusively with his advisor Al Haymon.

Most people can not deny the hold Gervonta Davis has over the sport. He is often referred to as the face of boxing! However, there are others, who, for many, also find themselves a place in that discussion. The CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, seems to have made his choice in this divisive argument! Something that he said revealed his choice on social media today!

Disagreeing with the user, Ellerbe confidently said, “Tank Davis is the most exciting fighter in the world!!!!!” In response to this, another user chimed in with his opinion, claiming Artur Beterbiev is the most exciting fighter, with Davis being a close second. However, Ellerbe wasn’t going to have any of it, as he disagreed even with the second user.

Ellerbe said, “That’s your opinion. I say Tank, and it ain’t close.” It’s worth mentioning that Davis hasn’t fought since his stoppage win over Ryan Garcia in April last year. Despite this year-long hiatus, Davis’ upcoming fight against Frank Martin is perhaps the most anticipated fight. Moreover, both Martin and Davis have seemingly confirmed the talks for their fight.

The potential fight between Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin is rumored to be held on June 22 in Huston, Texas. Previously, the fight was being planned for June 15, but when a fan on social media highlighted that the Toyota Center in Houston, which was rumored to be the venue, was booked by Megan Thee Stallion on the same date, Davis confirmed the actual date.

He added, “We’re still trying to wait on the venue and the exact date, but that’s not an official thing yet.”

Davis, Beterbiev, Ennis, or someone else entirely?

On June 29, Teofimo Lopez will potentially face Steve Claggett to defend his WBO Super-Lightweight title. ‘The Takeover’ won against Josh Taylor in June last year. On the other hand, Shakur Stevenson will put his WBC Lightweight title on the line against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 in New Jersey. Both the matches will be organized by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing. However, one must note that the Artem fight will be Shakur’s final bout with Top Rank before the 26-year-old enters free agency.

[Bob] Arum understands how to build fighters. It’s a process. Everybody can’t be ‘Tank’ Davis. We did that s**t and doing it. It’s like that motherf****r would love to be in business with a situation where he is generating revenue. He hadn’t got there yet. He got some good fighters. But, everybody can’t be an attraction. It’s a process,” said Leonard Ellerbe.

Teo’s a very good fighter. Shakur is a very good fighter. Wish them the best of success in their next events and what they got moving forward. But, everybody can’t be an attraction,” Ellerbe emphasized. Along these lines, he went on to praise Gervonta Davis.

According to Leonard Ellerbe, boxing stars are built over time. In this regard, he alluded to how Mayweather Promotions discovered Gervonta Davis in 2015. With Team Mayweather by his side, ‘Tank’ Davis started climbing up the ladder quickly. Eventually, he defeated Jose Pedraza in 2017 to win his first IBF Super-Feratherweight title. Therefore, Ellerbe added, “That is a process over a period of time.”
