Simone Biles should be focused on her Paris Olympics training, but instead she has to take time out of her life to address social media nonsense about her marriage.

Back in December 2023, NFL player Jonathan Owens appeared on “The Pivot” podcast to discuss his life and career. In what was supposed to be a cute moment, the hosts, Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder, asked Owens about his famous wife, legendary American gymnast Simone Biles. He revealed that they met online, with her contacting him first. He also explained that he had no idea who Biles was because he was so focused on football when she was in the Olympics. “I always say men the catch,” Owens said.

Everyone, including the hosts, were quick to correct Owens’ thinking on the subject, letting him know that Biles, the greatest gymnast of all-time, is in fact the catch in their marriage. Owens became the target of a swift internet backlash, with some fans encouraging the four-time Olympic gold medalist to leave him.

While the situation was “hilarious” to Biles when it started, the eight-time U.S. Champion grew tired of the judgment. In a recent appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, she defended her husband calling himself a catch.

“He never said I wasn’t a catch,” she said. “He said he was a catch because he is. I’ve never met a man like him. A lot of people that meet him are like, oh my gosh. I want a man like that, like Jonathan.”

Simone Biles‘ withdrawal from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to the Twisties was a defining moment, one she seeks redemption from as she aims for her fourth Olympics run in Paris. The fear of twisting and lack of spatial awareness that came with the Twisties made Simone want “to sulk in my feelings and to be by myself.”

But her celebrity status as a gymnastics icon and seven-time Olympic medalist made this emotional release impossible. As she boarded the plane back to America, her responsibilities as a sports icon had to be fulfilled, concealing an untold reality of post-Tokyo Olympics trauma behind her smiling demeanor, a reality that “nobody knew.”

However, behind the scenes, she was grappling with the traumas of the Twisties and began seeking therapy to cope. Simone explained, “I can’t recall what time our show started, but say it started at seven; I would be in therapy from like 4:30 to 6. And then I would give myself an hour to get ready.” She candidly shared moments when Jordan Chiles would walk into her room and find her “bawling my eyes out trying to put on my makeup because I’m talking to my therapist about the Olympic experience.”

However, upon reaching home, her family surprised her with a parade and urged her to get ready to parade through the neighborhood. She recalled, “Like, get your convertible. Smile and wave. I just wanted to have like a breakdown.” Reflecting on this moment of anguish, it’s important to acknowledge the hardships faced by even our sports icons as humans. Simone Biles returning to elite competition since mental health focus break

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Biles made global headlines after withdrawing from several finals to priortise her mental health as she dealt with what gymnastics call ‘the twisties,’ where the body and mind fall out of sync. She returned to competition, claiming the balance beam bronze medal, but also having started a worldwide conversation about mental health.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson praised Biles for her example.

“It’s not new that this is a very difficult position to be in, to be an athlete competing in front of millions of people with all of the expectation, it’s not new. It’s always been very difficult for athletes. But it has been very refreshing to see that now fans can accept that this is very difficult, and some times of athlete and needs to take time off,” said Johnson. “I thought Simone Biles back in 2021 during the Olympics was just an amazing moment for sport, but also for people outside [of sport]. You saw people outside of sport, as well, start to realise that this is important. Mental health is important, and so having that conversation, I think, has been fantastic, and another example of where sport can be in areas of society that are really important for people.”

After her second Olympic appearance, Biles stepped away from the sport, unsure of her future.

“I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to compete again because there were multiple times this year where I was in the gym and I was like, ‘I’m actually terrified of this full-in, like I’m not doing it again, never going to do it,'” Biles told Olympics.com in an exclusive interview last year.

The twisties and Simone Biles is a tale as old as time. Simone Biles’s emergence as a gymnastics icon is inspiring after her twisties debacle in Tokyo. During the games, Biles decided to withdraw her name from as many as four-team finals. The US gymnast further explained that due to her twisties, she got confused between the movements mid-air. It was during the middle of the events in Tokyo that Simone Biles developed a weird feeling. However, as the games progressed, Biles’ troubles only increased. In a recent conversation on the ‘CallHerDaddy’ podcast, Simone Biles recalled one such incident at the Tokyo Olympics. She explained that during one of the events, Biles completely lost her footing as to how she would enact her routines. However, in order to not make her team suffer, Biles risked everything to perform a two-and-a-half.

Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, Biles stated, “And then I was like, they put up a score for a two and a half, so I have to do a two and a half. And I’m thinking if I do a double back that’s so dangerous, my coach will kill me, my team will never forgive.”

For Simone Biles' legacy, medals will be secondary to her impact on mental health

Renowned media personality, Piers Morgan, lost his cool after Biles’ decision to withdraw from Tokyo. He put forward his opinion and stated that keeping calm in tough times is what defines a true athlete. Morgan then went on to term Biles as a “coward” and also a letdown for the country and her entire fan base.

Luckily for Biles, as strong as the criticisms were, love and support soon followed suit. It was none other than the former first lady of America, Michelle Obama, who extended her empathy for Biles. Her fellow teammate, Jordan Chiles, also supported her decision and dedicated Team USA’s silver medal to Biles.

Jason Whitlock delivered a scathing response to Simone Biles following her candid revelations about withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Biles opened up about the negative impact of social media attention on her decision, expressing:

“‘America hates me. The world is going to hate me. I can only see what they’re saying on Twitter right now.’ Usually if you go to the Olympics and flop or whatever it is, you get people on their couch eating those little chips. I thought I was going to be banned from America, ’cause that’s what they tell you: ‘Don’t come back if not gold. Gold or bust. Don’t come back.'”

In response, Whitlock didn’t mince words, drawing comparisons between Biles and Caitlin Clark, the first pick in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever. He rebuffed Biles’ perceived self-importance, asserting: “She’s built up this importance of herself and does things to make herself feel important.” Whitlock underscored the transient nature of gymnasts’ relevance, remarking, “She’s a gymnast and every four years they are relevant for a two or three week stretch.”

Further, Whitlock highlighted the discrepancy in public recognition between Biles and Clark, observing that while Clark garners instant recognition wherever she goes, the same cannot be said for Biles. Whitlock attributed this to the distortion of reality perpetuated by social media, noting, “It is a by-product of these young people and this new era we are living in where Twitter is their reality. It distorts reality.”

The NCAA gymnastics national semifinal unfolded yesterday, showcasing thrilling performances that left many fans delighted. However, amidst the excitement, one fan’s less-than-impressed reaction stirred up controversy, particularly with Olympic superstar Simone Biles.

Here’s what happened: a user on platform posted a “NCAA gymnastics semifinals night session 2024 in a nutshell,” featuring a compilation of gymnastics mishaps from previous years. While the user defended their post, Biles swiftly voiced her disapproval on social media.

“Yeah the most important day of our careers is a ke ke ha ha to you….” Biles wrote, accompanied by an unamused face emoji.

Simone Biles talks Tokyo Olympics fallout in new interview

It appears Biles wasn’t alone in her sentiments. Fans, commenting on Biles’ post, echoed her displeasure. One user remarked, “What’s funny is that 1 out of 10 people wouldn’t even be able to balance on the beam.”

Another supporter added, “Meanwhile you could give that person a year of training and they probably still wouldn’t be able to do one of those moves on a balance beam. Women gymnasts are a different breed. You will NEVER hear me talking (expletive) about people doing ninja training for a living.” And amidst the support, one fan cheered, “COOK EM QUEEN.

Regardless of the drama, Biles and Team USA will have the opportunity to prove themselves in Paris this summer and silence any doubters. In response to the fan’s post, Biles made it clear that she takes her sport seriously and won’t tolerate anyone making light of it. It’s understandable that she would be sensitive to criticism, especially when it comes to an event as important as the NCAA gymnastics national semifinal.

As for the fan who posted the lowlights package, it’s clear that they struck a nerve with Biles and her supporters. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, it’s important to remember that behind every routine and every performance, there are countless hours of training, sweat, and sacrifices.

Simone Biles is undoubtedly an athletic superstar, often defying the laws of physics on the mats.
