Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods, failed in his first attempt to qualify for a U.S. Open, shooting a 9-over 81 on Thursday.

The teen’s scorecard included one birdie, four bogeys and three double bogeys at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He shot a 40 on the front side and 41 on the back nine.

Woods finished 61st in a field of 74. Only the top-five finishers and two alternates advance out of local qualifying.

It’s been a busy stretch of golf for the younger Woods. He won a state high school championship with his team in Florida last fall. In February, he failed to advance in a qualifying event for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic, shooting a 16-over 86.

He also has played the 36-hole PNC Championship with his father the last four years in a scramble format.

Rory McIlroy says there is “no strain” in his relationship with Tiger Woods but admits they have different views on the future of men’s professional golf.

The disagreement arises from ongoing negotiations on a possible deal between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian backers of LIV Golf.

World number two McIlroy, who has softened his stance on the breakaway LIV tour, revealed he is now a member of the “transaction subcommittee” that is trying to do a deal.

The Telegraph reported, external that 15-time major winner Woods voted against McIlroy re-joining the board.

“I would say, I mean, I think friends can have disagreements or not see things – I guess not – not see eye to eye on things but have disagreements on things,” McIlroy said.

“I think that’s fine. But no, I wouldn’t say – we had a really good talk last Friday for 45 minutes just about a lot of different things.

“No, there’s no strain there. I think we might see the future of golf a little bit differently, but I don’t think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship.”

McIlroy, speaking after carding an opening four-under 67 at the Wells Fargo Championship, added: “I’ve already had calls with that group – I had a really good hour and a half Zoom with those guys on Sunday.

“We went through a 150-page doc about the future product model and everything.

“Yeah, I’m not on the board, but I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee. I don’t have a vote so I don’t – you know, I don’t have I guess a meaningful say in what happens in the future.”

On the PGA Tour policy board, McIlroy backtracked somewhat on his comments on Wednesday when he also said there was “a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason”.

A day later he asserted it had more to do with red tape.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ relationship is reportedly ‘souring’ amid ongoing efforts to increase revenues for the PGA Tour.

In-fighting is said to have taken place amid Mcllroy’s attempts to return to the tour’s player advisory board. According to Golf Digest, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay have all resisted the move.

On Wednesday, following the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, Mcllroy confirmed he would not be rejoining after all, after he left in November.

Golf Digest have reported that while the two are still ‘cordial’, their relationship has ‘soured’ over the last six months amid a “falling out” over their differing views on how to take the sport forward.

It’s claimed that some players discussed the idea of veteran Webb Simpson vacating his seat on the condition it would go to Mcllroy, despite the fact the positions are usually voted upon.

That won’t be the case, though, and as a result, Woods will be the only player negotiating with PIF, the Saudi Arabian consortium, along with a transaction subcommittee that also includes PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, board chairman Joe Gorder, John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group and Joe Ogilvie, a former tour player turned director liaison.

Mcllroy on staying away

Discussing his decision not to stay in the run for a seat on the board, Mcllroy has said: “I think it just…it got pretty complicated and pretty messy and I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before.

“I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason … I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term, and I think he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that and I just sort of keep doing what I’m doing.

“So yeah, I put my hand up to help and it was – I wouldn’t say it was rejected, it was a complicated process to get through to put me back on there. So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on.”

Tiger Woods‘ relationship with Rory McIlroy has ‘soured over recent months’ amid reports that the four-time major champion won’t rejoin the PGA Tour board due to other golfers feeling ‘uncomfortable’ with his potential return.

That’s according to Golf Digest, which claimed on Wednesday that the two former No. 1s ‘remain cordial’ but have opposing views on the future of professional golf, leading to a fall out of sorts.

On the same day, McIlroy, who stepped down from the PGA Tour board in November, revealed that a plan to replace Webb Simpson was met with resistance from board members.

Simpson, one of six player-directors, recently offered to give up his seat – but only if McIlroy were to replace him. McIlroy would have needed board approval to be reinstated to his old position.

But McIlroy said ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship that conversations surrounding his potential return became ‘pretty complicated and messy,’ which reminded him of why he left in the first place.

‘I think with the way it happened it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before,’ McIlroy said. ‘I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.’

McIlroy’s reinstatement would have been viewed as a chance to help improve the PGA Tour’s stalled negotiations with the Saudi financial backers of LIV Golf.

The world’s No. 2 player said when he stepped down he could no longer commit the time and energy that board work required with the PGA Tour trying to finalize an agreement with the Public Investment Fund.

Simpson said he now plans to finish out his three-year term on the board. He said he offered to give up his seat to McIlroy because he’s a ‘global superstar’ and would give Europeans a needed voice in major tour decisions.

Acouple of years ago, Tiger Woods reiterated his refusal to play a tournament in a golf cart. However, after his considerable problems with injuries, Paul Brdoadhurst assured that the former world number one will have to use a buggy to play the PGA Champions Tour.

Broadhurst has two second places on the PGA senior tour in the United States, and his earnings have just reached $728,000, all thanks to the Champions Tour rules allowing him to play tournaments in a golf cart.

Last year, PGA officials granted the player a waiver to use the buggy. The English golfer can no longer play the 18 holes on foot due to the arthritis he suffers from in one of his ankles, and he needs medication to allow him to walk.

For his part, the English veteran recalled that he suffers from severe arthritis in his right ankle that would prevent him from walking the 18 holes of a round. However, since the PGAChampions Tour allowed him to use a cart, he has been able to be more consistent with his game.

He explained that his ankle needs surgery, but that will have to wait until his final retirement from the circuit. “At the moment, I have been told it is a year to recover from, but I haven’t got a year playing this game.”

Woods has said he hopes to play one tournament a month this year. He qualifies automatically for the US PGA Championship later this year as a former champion. The championship begins on 13 June.

For the first time in his career, Tiger Woods has received an invitation to a major.

The USGA issued a ticket for the 48-year-old golfer who will return to Pinehurst 2 (North Carolina) to a tournament he has not played since 2020 and which he has won three times, the last time in 2008 in that playoff on Monday when he won with a limp and where all his physical problems began to manifest themselves definitively.

The news comes after Woods‘ exemption for the US Open expired last year when his five-year exemption for all majors, achieved thanks to his victory at the 2019 Masters, the 15th major of his career, came to an end.

US Open winners have a 10-year exemption for that tournament. “The history of this tournament cannot be written without him,” said the organisers to justify his invitation and not having to go to the qualifiers, which several of the players at LIV Golf, for example, will have to attend.
