Anthony Joshua, a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, is convinced Oleksandr Usyk had beaten Tyson Fury in their undisputed heavyweight bout on Saturday.

Usyk won via split decision in Saudi Arabia, adding the WBC heavyweight belt to the IBF, WBO, and WBA titles he initially took from Joshua in 2021.

Although Fury led on two judges’ scorecards after eight rounds, Usyk’s powerful overhand left in the ninth round and a series of unanswered punches forced Fury to take a standing count.

Despite all three judges scoring the final round in Fury’s favour, it was too late, as Usyk won with scores of 115-112 and 114-113 on two cards.

Joshua, seated ringside alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, watched as Usyk handed Fury the first loss of his professional career in a thrilling fight.

Moments after the final bell, Joshua told TNT Sports that he believed Usyk had won. When asked who he thought was victorious, he immediately replied, “Usyk.” Upon being met with surprise, Joshua responded, “Huh, who do you think?”

In an interview with iFL TV, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn shared Joshua’s perspective: “He [Joshua] thought Usyk won. I asked him, ‘What do you think?’ and he said, ‘Usyk won it easy’. I had it quite close, but he was adamant.”

Hearn added, “I thought Fury boxed fantastically well in the first six rounds and was well on his way to a stoppage or points decision, but Usyk was incredible.”

When asked if Usyk’s win over Fury would affect Joshua’s plans, Hearn replied, “Not really. We want to regain the world heavyweight title, so whoever has it has it. The rematch is a big fight, likely set for October. We have to work on our plans, potentially at Wembley, and see what happens on June 1.”

Tyson Fury, the reigning WBC heavyweight champion, has asserted his dominance ahead of his highly anticipated clash with Oleksandr Usyk, declaring, “It’s my time, my destiny, my era, and my generation.”

Fury’s upcoming bout with Usyk, scheduled for May 18th in Saudi Arabia, is poised to be the first undisputed world heavyweight showdown of the century. Usyk, the reigning WBA, IBF, and WBO title-holder, poses a formidable challenge for Fury, having transitioned from unified cruiserweight champion to heavyweight contender in 2019.

Speaking at a press conference in Morecambe, Fury emphasized that the showdown with Usyk is strictly business, devoid of personal animosity. “There’s a lot of stuff on the line, but I don’t hate him, he don’t hate me,” Fury stated.

Drawing on his extensive knowledge of boxing history, Fury highlighted the challenges faced by cruiserweights when stepping up to compete against larger opponents in the heavyweight division. “When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, usually they get found wanting,” Fury remarked. “You can beat the average big ones, but you can’t beat the elite big ones, because size really matters.”

Fury’s confidence in his ability to overcome Usyk stems from his belief in the significance of weight divisions in boxing. He anticipates that Usyk will struggle against him due to the size disparity, echoing sentiments expressed in a previous statement regarding the limitations of cruiserweights competing against elite heavyweights.

Former world champion Anthony Joshua (27-3, 24 KO) admitted that he was not surprised by the problems encountered by WBC titleholder Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KO) against Francis Ngannou last October.

AJ notes that some people refer to the 35-year-old Fury as the “greatest,” but he does not share that view.

“I’ve watched Tyson Fury fight many times – people claim he’s the greatest, but I think if I were to box Tyson Fury, the fight would be much like facing Ngannou,” said Joshua.

Joshua had his last fight in December against Sweden’s Otto Wallin. Anthony won by technical knockout in the fifth round.

Earlier, Ngannou compared Joshua and Fury, expressing doubts about AJ’s ability to take a punch.

Two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has taunted Tyson Fury and played down Francis Ngannou’s achievement of dropping his fellow countryman, as he prepares to go one better than Fury and stop the former UFC superstar.

Ngannou dropped Tyson Fury on his professional boxing debut in the most shocking moment of boxing in 2023, but ultimately lost a split-decision to ‘The Gypsy King’, coming so close yet so far to pulling off arguably the greatest upset in the history of the sport.

As a result of his strong performance against Fury, Ngannou has now landed another super-fight despite his 0-1 record, taking on another British heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua, in just over two weeks’ time.

However, in the DAZN face-off ahead of their battle, Joshua dismissed Ngannou’s jaw-dropping knockdown, whilst responding to the Cameroonian’s belief that he will not be able to recover as well as Fury did if he too hits the canvas.
