WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has once again taken aim at Floyd Mayweather after the boxing legend claimed that Davis’ upcoming fight against Frank Martin had been cancelled, stirring up both ‘Tank’ and his fans. Davis has held the WBA title since his 2019 knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa after moving up to lightweight.

Recently, he was promoted to full champion status following Devin Haney‘s move up in weight and vacating the WBA (Super) belt.

After a prolonged absence from the ring, largely due to awaiting a WBA decision, Davis is set to return and defend his title for the first time against the undefeated Frank Martin next month.

On the other hand, Mayweather was preparing for his own return in an exhibition match, more than a year after his chaotic bout against John Gotti III.

He was expected to announce a fight against Victor Ortiz, a former opponent, but his failure to show up at the press conference cast doubt on the event.

Davis took to Instagram to comment on Mayweather’s no-show, accusing him of scamming and taking people’s money.

“This is sad, hopefully this is just a rumour,” Mayweather said.

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has once again gunned for Floyd Mayweather after the pound-for-pound legend claimed that Davis’ upcoming fight against Frank Martin had been cancelled in an attempt to aggravate both ‘Tank’ and his fans.

Davis had held the WBA (Regular) title ever since he moved up to the lightweight division and knocked out Yuriorkis Gamboa back in 2019 but a few months ago the undefeated power-puncher was finally upgraded to full champion, due to Devin Haney’s decision to move up in weight and vacate the WBA (Super) belt.

After over a year away from the ring, much of which was spent waiting on a decision by the WBA, Davis will finally return and defend his title for the first time when he takes on undefeated countryman Martin next month.

Meanwhile, Mayweather was poised to make a comeback of his own and fight in another exhibition over 12 months since his last event against John Gotti III – which ended in chaos.

‘Money’ was scheduled to announce a bout against Victor Ortiz, whom he controversially beat during his professional career, but Mayweather failed to turn up to the press conference, casting doubt as to whether the event will go ahead.

On his Instagram, Davis reacted to the news of Mayweather’s absence, which has reportedly cost the CDMX Government $1 million.

“He is out here scamming again. Taking people’s money.”

In response, Mayweather posted that the Davis-Martin card had been cancelled, with Davis replying in a post of his own in which he labelled the 47-year-old as a ‘hater’.

News of Mayweather’s truancy aligns with other rumours shared by Davis, who declared that the veteran is being held hostage in Dubai, after failures to compete in the five exhibition bouts that he had planned in 2023 – of which he managed two, as reported by talkSPORT.

“N***a says all this bulls***, but [he’s] in Dubai and can’t leave because he’s been taking n***as’ money and not doing what they paid him to do. N***a a f***ing hater.”

“He gotta pay people that money back. If I’m lying tell him to go live right now. He’s been stuck over there for a minute too.”

Regardless of Mayweather’s comments, Davis-Martin will go ahead on June 15th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, topping a bill that also features fan-favourite David Benavidez – who will debut at 175lbs against Oleksandr Gvozdyk after frustrations at Canelo’s unwillingness to face him at super-middleweight.

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis claims he is financially better off than Floyd Mayweather Jr. was at the same age after signing a 6-7 fight deal.

WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) says the contract he signed with PBC – which includes a fight against Shakur Stevenson – is more lucrative than the six-fight deal Mayweather signed with Showtime in 2013.

Davis hasn’t disclosed exactly how much he stands to earn, but it estimated to be worth $250million.

According to reports at the time, Mayweather‘s 2013 deal was worth $200m, which he had when he was 29. But Davis claims he has eclipsed the retired boxing icon.

“I’m at the point where I passed him and I’m doing it at a young age. When Floyd Mayweather was 29 [he wasn’t doing it like me], you’ll see,” said Gervonta Davis to Cigar Talk.

“That [6-7 fight] deal that I was talking about, that’s bigger than his [Mayweather’s] deal, and I’m just releasing it on here.”

The difference between the two is that Mayweather wasn’t earning such amounts at that age, as the sport has evolved financially for lower-ranked boxers.

Will Gervonta Davis have a better legacy than Floyd Mayweather?

When Mayweather was 29, he was fighting the likes of Emanuel Augustus and Gregorio Vargas and refused to duck any opponent that he was faced against. Davis, meanwhile, has faced claims that he has cherry-picked opponents he has a better chance of beating.

It doesn’t look like Tank Davis‘ career will be anywhere close to Mayweather‘s in terms of legacy after choosing not to fight the likes of Vasily Lomachenko and Devin Haney in his 11-year professional career.

That is where the two fighters differ, as Mayweather was keen to take on the top opponents such as Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton. As a result, his paychecks would be bigger than Tank‘s.

It’s fair to say Mayweather also had the ability to drawn in huge TV audiences for his fights, which resulted in the undefeated champion taking a bigger slice of the pie.

Gervonta Davis is raising eyebrows on social media after saying he’s richer than Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the age of 29.

Davis appeared as a guest on a recent episode of the ‘Cigar Talk’ podcast, which was published via YouTube on Sunday, May 5. During the 13-minute sitdown, Davis mentioned Mayweather while speaking about his financial standing and a deal he recently signed. To note, the boxers have had a long-standing rift since 2022, per MARCA.

“Floyd… feel as though I’m at that point where I start to pass him,” he said about ten minutes into the interview. “And I’m doing it at a young age. When Floyd was 29 — you’ll see, bro.”

Davis paused on finishing his statement and instead added, “That deal I’m talking about — that deal? He don’t know nothing about that yet. But that’s bigger than his deal.”

The professional boxer ultimately explained that the details about his recent signage will be released soon.

According to talkSPORT, Davis recently signed a six-to-seven-fight deal with the Premier Boxing Champions network. At this time, the figure he signed for appears to be under wraps. However, reports are circulating that Davis’ deal is expected to be worth around $250 million.

MARCA notes that Mayweather also signed a six-to-seven-fight deal with Showtime in 2013. However, his deal was worth $200 million, and at that time, he was 36 years old.

On Instagram stories, Tank, now Abdul Wahid, shared an image of him with a friend. Along with the image, he wrote, “Loyalty means everything!” 

What is the significance of this post you may ask? Well, Tank and ‘Pretty Boy’ used to be close until last year,him when the legend helped crack a great deal for his fight against Ryan Garcia. However, now that Shakur Stevenson is batting hard to fight Davis, Mayweather seems to have shifted the team.

While Tank took digs at him for supposedly being stranded in Dubai for money issues, Mayweather shared a video on his Instagram stories. In it, Shakur Stevenson makes direct remarks toward Tank. He noted, “It’s a fighter out here that’s been calling your name, that wants to fight you. Gervonta “Tank” Davis, let’s make the fight happen. I’m tired of tweeting, I’m tired of talking about it. Stop ducking me and let’s make the fight happen.”

Earlier, speculations started about Mayweather being held by Dubai authorities for not paying up his debt. A fan on X nudged Tank to comment on such rumours. Confirming the same, he wrote, “He gotta pay them people that money back..if I’m lying tell him to go live rn.” He backed his stance by writing in another post, “He been stuck over there for a min too..”

While these could just be conjecture that Tank was spewing, IBHOF elector Rick Glasser confirmed the claims. On X, he remarked, “Just got off the phone with my guy in Dubai, he told me that #Floyd #Mayweather is definitely being held by the Government court system there as he owes a substantial amount of money in Dubai…Was told the debt is #unassociated with #Boxing. Floyd’s desperately trying to work things out, to no avail so far. So @Gervontaa #TankDavis is correct that Floyd’s being held there!!!”

Floyd Mayweather is the richest boxer of all time. Yet, Gervonta Davis is offering monetary help to get ‘Money’ out of the alleged hostage situation he’s run into in Dubai. But, does ‘Tank’ really mean the help or is it his yet another attempt at taking digs at the former welterweight champion? In the formative days of Tank’s career, he and Mayweather used to be tight. So much so that the young fighter was seen as Mayweather’s prodigy. After having been under the Mayweather banner for a huge chunk of his career, Davis left the bastion. While he cited no dispute for leaving the stable, in the days post the separation cracks emerged in their relationship. Now, Davis is making these cracks evident to the utter dismay of Floyd Mayweather.

The other day, Davis, furthered a set of claims about Mayweather’s whereabouts after some disagreements with his former promoter. The 47-year-old fighter is in Dubai for a while, and many think he’s landed in trouble over there. This led Gervonta Davis to claim that Floyd Mayweather was being held in Dubai, on account of the money he owes his partners in Dubai. On X, a fan account thus responded: “Let me find out Floyd being held hostage in Dubai @Gervontaa.”

In response, the 29-year-old fighter came up with his own suggestion in this regard. He wrote, “He gotta pay them people that money back..if I’m lying tell him to go live rn.” He backed his stance by writing in another post, “He been stuck over there for a min too..”

This angered Mayweather who then posted an Instagram story that showed Tank dancing in his drawers with a message above it reading, “We always knew He had sugar in his Tank.” After this, things got worse with Tank posting relentlessly on his X throughout the day. Davis continued the harangue in yet another X post. He wrote, “That money looking funny like that fake ass hair on his head and face,” furthering rumors of Floyd Mayweather sporting artificial facial hair.

In response to the jabs Tank has been taking at Mayweather, the latter posted a video on his Instagram stories. In it, he shared a clip of Shakur Stevenson calling out Tank. The New Jersey native, in the clip, said, “It’s a fighter out here that’s been calling your name, that wants to fight you. Gervonta “Tank” Davis, let’s make the fight happen. I’m tired of tweeting, I’m tired of talking about it. Stop ducking me and let’s make the fight happen.”

On X, meanwhile, another fan nudged Tank on the videos Mayweather posted of Stevenson, outlining that he chose Shakur over Gervonta Davis. In response, Tank wrote, “Floyd doesn’t like him either..he only siding w that kid becuz he scared of j prince (the father) and the kid so easy to manipulate, look how he had em go at young boy w the rolls umbrella..kid looking for fame.”

We’re only getting started with this feud, with even Shakur Stevenson getting in on it.

Gervonta Davis has never been afraid to call out anyone, no matter their physical size or level of legacy in the boxing world. And now he’s going after Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“Tank” claimed that Mayweather is “being held hostage” in Dubai because he owes people money. Mayweather has quickly fired back by posting a video of Davis where he’s dancing “zesty”.

On the subsequent Instagram story, Mayweather posted a video of Shakur Stevenson imploring Davis to fight him.
