Gervonta Davis refuses to be Errol Spence Jr.’s tune-up opponent

After Sebastian Fundora beat Tim Tszyu to become the unified Super-Welterweight champion of the world, Errol Spence Jr., who watched the fight live, entered the ring to call out Fundora. As ‘The Towering Inferno’ had “got the big dog,” Tim Tszy, ‘The Truth’ said it was time he fought Fundora in the ring. However, the boxing commentator known as 2ToneDaSupastar suggested Spence Jr. rather fight Gervonta Davis to recover from the loss against Crawford before trying himself against Fundora.

Aht! Aht! Errol Spence you need a TUNE UP!! That Terence Crawford A** whooping wasn’t a regular A** whooping,” he said. “Gone and get with Gervonta Davis match maker and get a soft touch,” he added. Soon, the statement came to Gervonta Davis’ notice!

In a reply which was captured by BOXING n BBQ, Davis told 2ToneDaSupastar, “Ima beat yo fat a** when I catch you omm.” Well, frankly speaking, it is unlikely that Errol Spence Jr. and Gervonta Davis will lock horns. In addition to being four inches shorter than ‘The Truth,’ Davis will have to climb up to the Super-Welterweight division for the fight! Anyway, in this context, one must mention that Spence Jr. is likely to face Sebastian Fundora next.

Both Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora have shown interest in fighting one another. However, after Fundora’s victory over Tim Tszyu, the WBC ordered Fundora to begin negotiations with the mandatory opponent Terence Crawford. Meanwhile, Fundora’s manager Sampson Lewkowicz also expressed their desire to rematch Tszyu in Australia. But, since Fundora and Spence Jr. are with the PBC, promoter Eddie Hearn felt ‘The Truth’ vs. ‘The Towering Inferno’ could also be the next potential big fight!

I think you’ll either see Fundora against Tszyu or Fundora against Spence. I don’t think you will see Fundora against Crawford,” Eddie Hearn told FightHype. Well, only time will tell what is next for Fundora and Spence Jr. But, do you think Gervonta Davis shall be Errol Spence Jr.’s tune-up? Also, what do you make of Davis’ reply?

The winner of Tim Tszyu vs. Sebastian Fundora is set to face the big sharks of the welterweight class. While the two battle it out for Tszyu’s WBO super welterweight belt and the vacant WBC title, both Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford have expressed their desire to challenge whoever goes home with those titles in their kitty.

On Saturday night, at the iconic T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas, 20-1-1 record holder, Fundora will fight his Aussie opponent, Tszyu, in hopes of grabbing hold of the titles that he’s been chasing for a while. However, that’s not his only incentive. A fight against either ‘Bud’ or ‘The Truth’ will only push him into the elite fighters’ league of the weight class. Is he willing for such an undertaking?

It seems he is currently basking in the comfort of his life, beyond the boxing ring and the borders of the United States.

‘The Truth’ has started to hit the gym after going through a cataract injury earlier this year and deciding not to trigger a rematch clause with ‘Bud’. However, the fans have raised concerns about him being in better shape, both physically and mentally. But they can lay their worries to rest, as Frank Martin issued an update on his famed stablemate.

Frank Martin gets controversial decision victory in Las Vegas

Martin, who is rumored to face Gervonta Davis next in June, appeared in an interview with Cigar Talk. The host curiously inquired about Spence Jr., who has been away from action since last July. The interviewer asked, “Tell me about EJ bro. We haven’t really seen or heard from him since the ‘Bud’ fight publicly, you know. What I mean interviews and all that sh*t… When you speak to him, do you feel like ni**a’s in a safe space? Do you feel like he still got that fighting spirit? Is EJ still EJ?”

Martin, 29, responded that Spence Jr. was living his life and chilling. The latter had barely been in the country. He said, “Yeah, EJ still EJ, you know. EJ just living his life, you know. He [is] chilling. He been boxing, he been boxing for a long time, you know. EJ chilling. EJ barely in the country. Man, EJ living.”

The host then remarked that Spence Jr.’s passport would have been going crazy. To that, Martin, at 18-0, hilariously replied, “He got stamps.” It seems the Long Island native has taken a break from boxing and is currently focused on healing. He needs some time to recover from the most devastating phase of his professional life.

But Spence Jr. hasn’t discarded a return to the ring. The 28-1 record holder still has some years left in him. But against whom is he targeting a return? Is there a name yet?

Spence Jr., 34, recently shunned fans’ suggestion that Keith Thurman was a worthy opponent who could welcome him to the boxing ring. But the welterweight boxer doesn’t share the same thought process. He was quick to strike out Thurman’s name from his list of probable opponents.

It remains to be seen when the American boxer can return to the squared circle, as he is yet to recover from his cataract surgery and achieve peak fitness levels. Meanwhile, Martin is well-positioned to challenge for a title against ‘Tank’ and awaits the official announcement.

Is Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid after converting to Islam, underestimating Frank Martin whom ‘Tank’ is rumored to face in June this year? Well, given Davis’ resume in the sport, the popular opinion is that Gervonta will easily bear down Martin. However, Errol Spence Jr., who signed ‘The Ghost’ in 2020, has his faith in Frank. But, in this regard, when Spence Jr. publicly announced his support for Martin, Davis ridiculed it.

While it’s debatable whether or not Davis is underestimating Martin, ‘Tank’ is certainly confident about his success against ‘The Ghost’. Therefore, Davis indirectly questioned Martin’s skills. But, on the other hand, Derrick James revealed Martin was working hard for the fight.

Ahead of the fight against Hector Luis Garcia in January last year, Gervonta Davis’ name was linked with Frank Martin’s. On that note, being Martin’s promoter since 2020, Errol Spence Jr. sided with Martin’s abilities. However, Davis, who earlier sparred with Martin, cautioned Spence Jr. by saying, “Errol better watch out. He’ll get his fighter [Frank Martin] hurt bad like I did before.” But, now that Davis and Martin are being placed on the same page again, Spence Jr. upheld ‘The Ghost’ one more time.

Taking to X, ‘The Truth’ declared, “I’m team me & whoever signed with me which is team Frank Martin…” However, ‘Tank’ Davis was not pleased with Spence’s tweet. Therefore, he replied with a photo that looked like Spence Jr. made ‘Tank’ cringe. And although Davis soon deleted his response, Michael Benson managed to get a screenshot of the same in time.

While Gervonta Davis and Spence Jr. had their moments on X, Derrick James told the media that Frank Martin was training with his heart out for the Davis fight.

For Team Martin, the fight against Davis is a “big deal”

Since Frank Martin has sparred with Gervonta Davis in the past, ‘The Ghost’ is aware of Davis’ abilities. For example, ahead of Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz, when FightHype interviewed Martin, ‘The Ghost’ meditated on “good experience” with Davis. According to Frank, Davis is sharp, holds his own, and fights like a “beast“. However, Martin also claimed that Davis was not the most powerful boxer he came across in his life. Anyway, should the fight happen in June this year, it would be one of the biggest events in Martin’s pro career.

On that note, Martin’s trainer Derrick James said, “We have Frank Martin working out. Things have been said about that [the potential fight against Davis in June]. It’s a big deal, yeah.” With that said, what do you now make of Gervonta Davis’ reaction to Errol Spence Jr.’s tweet?
