Anthony Joshua faces Francis Ngannou knowing a statement victory could open up one of the most exciting periods in his career as he targets becoming a three-time world heavyweight champion; watch Joshua face Ngannou live on Sky Sports Box Office on Friday March 8.

Anthony Joshua keeps coming. Again and again. His global allure undeterred by setbacks, his will to hit back more than a match for his sceptics and his power – when unleashed – still one of the scintillating flashpoints in the modern fight game.

Whether relaunch or retaliation, his renewed pursuit of boxing’s pinnacle resumes in less orthodox circumstances on Friday when he pits his knockout exploits against that of former UFC star Francis Ngannou. A stoppage victory beckons as the latest statement on his targeted route back to heavyweight glory, while threatening a sharp jab to the Tyson Fury tale in light of the Gypsy King’s uncomfortable encounter with Ngannou late last year.

Ngannou wanted the biggest and the best were he to sacrifice UFC supremacy for his childhood dreams of stepping inside the ring. So he came to Fury and now he comes to Joshua, the latter of whom’s influence as a beacon of his era has helped sell yet more historic crossover combat in Saudi Arabia’s heavyweight playground.

Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou: Could winner fight for undisputed title next? - BBC Sport

The career of Ngannou has unfolded minus the burden of expectation such is his underdog background, while in contrast there may be no British fighter of the last decade that has shouldered as much pressure to succeed as Joshua during his gold-medal-springboarded rise to fame.

Heavyweight boxing’s proclivity for fluctuation can be everybody’s favourite selling point until said fluctuation arrives. Joshua has conquered and been conquered, he has dictated, defended and, in turn, been dethroned; welcome to heavyweight boxing. The blemishes are fewer than some might wish you to believe, and the potential opportunities ahead more exciting than some might allow you to envision.

Write-off narratives have been tentatively nudged towards Joshua, and clobbered into the distance for good measure. He knows world titles are still within reach, he knows a British heavyweight showdown for the ages is still there to be made, he knows his luring power as a face for the sport remains intact, he knows in himself there are still knockouts to be recorded and headlines with which to bolster his legacy, both in and out of the ring.

Olympic glory had teed up the story for British boxing’s next gold-encrusted poster boy when he officially stepped up from the amateur ranks in 2013, three knockout wins each inside two rounds doing well to set the tone for what was to follow. He would waste no time in burning the ground between himself and domestic rivals with seven knockout victories to announce himself in 2014, three of which he ended in the first round and none of which surpassed three.

Anthony Joshua Declares His Readiness To Take On Francis Ngannou

Unfiltered, uncontainable ferocity was ripping through the heavyweight scene, and the unadulterated confidence of a soon-to-be-champion rapidly building.

Within his 2014 run had come a second-round stoppage win over Denis Bakhtov to claim the vacant WBC international heavyweight title, which Joshua went on to retain towards the start of the next year with a breezy second-round knockout victory over the, albeit older, Kevin Johnson who had previously gone the distance with Fury.

Between 2014 and the opening months of 2015, the extent of his lasting impression had chiselled the odds on his world champion prospects. It came as a defining explosion in a moment when boxing needed another heavyweight protagonist to prop up its landscape over the coming years. His reach was extending beyond boxing’s purists and touching a mainstream market with an ease to which only sporting superstars could attest; a decade on, as much is being amplified as Ngannou and Saudi Arabia draw on his appeal to boost their profile further through Friday’s lucrative main event.

A lasting impression in 2014 became the trigger for lasting memories, and lasting images of Joshua, of which people will have their own.

I've sparred Francis Ngannou and got knocked out by Anthony Joshua – here's why I can't call their fight | talkSPORT

December 12, 2015: the lasting image for some might have been Joshua spinning his aloft wrist to play to the crowd in pre-celebratory mode as he hunted down a wobbling Dillian Whyte on the ropes before finishing his foe in the seventh round of their London grudge match. Spite had met slick showmanship to officially raise the curtain on his era of contention.

Then came the wry smile of an epiphanic Charles Martin – the Brit’s gateway to world titles – as he was sat down by a vicious right hand from Joshua, who slouched in his corner and shrugged his shoulders as if in wait of the real challenge while becoming IBF champion with a second-round stoppage victory in April 2016. And then a year later the crashing, head-snapping 11th-round uppercut that would kickstart his decisive flurry and ultimately spell the end of Wladimir Klitschko’s storied career as Joshua overcame a knockdown to stop the Ukrainian icon and confirm his place among the elite.

There was the exercise in patience over 12 rounds against Joseph Parker to become unified champion in March 2018, and a return to knockout destruction against Alexander Povetkin to dispatch a mandatory later in the year. There was the day the world stood still in June 2019 as a little-known Andy Ruiz Jr produced one of the great upsets in history to stun Joshua on his US debut, and the day Joshua secured redemption by out-classing his counterpart to snatch back his world titles with a unanimous decision response in Saudi later in the year. On he went.

There was the ill-effective game-plan that failed to solve one of boxing’s most complex, perhaps-unsolvable (tbc), equations in Oleksandr Usyk as Joshua relinquished his belts to the Ukrainian maestro in September 2021. And then the vastly-improved yet still unrewarded follow-up performance in the pair’s rollercoaster rematch, which had teased glimmers of Joshua dynamite in a thrilling ninth round before unloading the heartache of defeat when he tossed Usyk’s belts out of the ring during a post-fight outburst for which he would later apologise.

Lasting images of both ecstasy and adversity tell the tale of a true heavyweight journey, along which Joshua has both been hailed for his finishing prowess and asked to temper his bombs-away aggression, across which he has both been encouraged to try and out-box the ultimate technician in Usyk and questioned for straying from his natural fight instincts.

The scrutiny has been fierce under an unwavering spotlight, where glory as a two-time world champion has been accompanied by a shock only heavyweight boxing could conjure, coaching mistakes and a collision with a master in Usyk. Within that, he has never turned down a challenge. And here he comes again, as he always does.

Francis Ngannou - Brutal 290lbs ''Anthony Joshua Boxing Fight'' Training 2024 - YouTube

In August he flattened Robert Helenius in round seven, and in December bludgeoned Otto Wallin into a round five retirement. He had been cast off towards decline by critics in the wake of his post-Usyk rant and seen his career questioned after a cautious return fight against Jermaine Franklin, but here was the reminder, if it was needed, that the knockout spark was still there. And suddenly, the heavyweight division began to feel better off for it.

The latest act of the AJ show could throw it back to where it began, the cold-blooded hunter with bigger prizes still to come. Joshua has triumphed at the top, since tasted and weathered a storm and now finds himself back staging one of the most high-profile fights of the year with tantalising implications regarding his immediate plans.

Filip Hrgovic could lie ahead in a clash for the IBF belt and a chance to become a three-time world heavyweight champion, however with victory over Ngannou the attention could yet fast-track towards the winner of Fury and Usyk’s duel for undisputed later this spring.

There is a fresh fire, a recharged focus, a heightened danger to Anthony Joshua, who still believes he can have the final say at the top of a heavyweight generation approaching its climax, if it isn’t already there. A statement against Ngannou could set up one of the most intriguing periods of Joshua’s career.

Floyd Mayweather sees one welterweight contender as a perfect opponent for Terence Crawford in his next title fight.

Mayweather identified Jaron Ennis as the prime candidate to try and dethrone the pound-for-pound king of boxing.

He took his stance on the grounds of Crawford not being able to land a bout against Canelo Alvarez or a rematch with Errol Spence Jr.

Now seven months removed from his seventh-round knockout of Spence Jr., Mayweather thinks that Crawford and Ennis is next up on the itinerary.

Floyd Mayweather bills Jaron Ennis as tough challenge for Terence Crawford

The Money Team founder sat down for an interview with Fight Hype and gave sound reason for a Crawford and Ennis welterweight contest:

Two Division Champion Says There Is "No Doubt" Crawford Is Better Than Mayweather

“Somebody’s got to give ‘Boots’ the opportunity. It’s been difficult for Terence Crawford to get the Spence rematch done, it’s been difficult to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option is to fight ‘Boots’ Ennis,” Mayweather said.

Crawford has seemingly conquered all of the top competition at 147 pounds except for the Michigan native.

‘Boots’ Ennis possesses the speed, flash, and technical skills to bother Crawford. He’d also be the last major pugilist at 147 pounds for Crawford to potentially best before moving up in weight, which he’s long desired.

Mayweather also drew from his fight with Canelo Alvarez back in 2013. He stated that giving Alvarez a chance helped boost his profile. Win or lose, Ennis is at a juncture in his career where a strong performance against Crawford would similarly pay immeasurable dividends.

The retired legend even threw David Benavidez’s name out there for Crawford to consider at 168 pounds, though a 21-pound jump may be too extreme.

Mayweather’s backing of Ennis would give boxing an anticipated fight, though Crawford is currently in a league of his own, regardless of division.

Who truly reigns as boxing’s supreme icon? Armand Carlos Netsing Takam, who once represented Cameroon in the 2004 Olympics, voices his verdict, but with an unexpected twist. Imagine selecting not one, but two faces of boxing. Canelo Alvarez, the Mexican maestro, boasts a staggering 60-2-2 record, shimmering with world titles across four weight classes.

Enter Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, the dynamo, who once KOed Ryan Garcia and is now preparing to fight Frank Martin. Why this duo? And why not Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Takam’s choice defies the usual one-champion narrative, stirring curiosity. What makes them stand out in his eyes?

In the heart of a heated debate over boxing’s leading figure, Carlos Takam, the 40-8 fighter, delivered his verdict with confidence. In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports’ Sahil Sood hosted by Press Box PR, Sood probed, “There’s an ongoing debate in the boxing world regarding who deserves the title of face of boxing. Possible contenders are Canelo, Gervonta Davis, and Terence Crawford. Who do you think among these fighters deserve to be the face of the sport?”

Gervonta Davis states he has Canelo Alvarez skills at 135 lbs

Takam’s response was both decisive and enlightening. “Canelo. I’m going to pick two, Canelo and Davis,” he stated, initially placing Alvarez at the forefront. However, he quickly nuanced his stance, “Well, I want to say, I want to pick Davis first and Canelo second.”

Diving into his rationale, Takam highlighted Canelo Alvarez’s exceptional boxing prowess, reflected in his thoughtful admiration of the Mexican champion. “One, I pick Canelo because that guy is a really great boxer, you know, he’s a good boxer. And then I think he was so good that time, when they put him against Mayweather. But that fight, I think it was too soon to put him against Mayweather. Canelo won that fight, not the fight, but the experience, you know. He learned many things about that fight with Mayweather. And he’s a good fighter. You know, when you see Canelo fight, people enjoy when they see Canelo fight.”

His commentary not only shed light on Alvarez’s storied career but also underscored the respect he holds for Gervonta Davis. Takam elaborated on his admiration for Davis, “And Davis, I want to pick Davis. Why? He’s a young guy, strong guy. They call him Tank, right? Really strong. And then I like the way he fight. I like the way he fights. I see many of his fights, I see many of his training. It’s no excuse. You know, he goes to fight, he doesn’t go to job. He’s a warrior, like they say in Africa, he’s a lion. Yes, he’s a lion.”

Through Takam’s lens, the conversation illuminated the qualities that, in his view, position Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis as frontrunners for the face of boxing—melding prowess, resilience, and the sheer spectacle of their presence in the ring.

More than a decade ago, at the emblematic MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, one of the most memorable fights between Floyd Mayweather and Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez took place.

On that occasion, the former American boxer emerged victorious against the Mexican fighter without too much difficulty.

Recently, Mayweather has shared little-known details of that fight, which still resonates in the minds of fans of the sport. The former world champion’s revelations have shed new light on that historic confrontation between two boxing titans.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather made it clear that it was Canelo, who at the time was 23 years old, who requested that the fight be held at an agreed-upon weight of 152 pounds.

“Let’s be clear that I didn’t choose the agreed weight, it was Canelo who asked for it,” Mayweather stated.

I never asked Canelo for a bantamweight. I remember someone on Canelo’s team gave an interview where they said they were willing to fight Floyd at a bantamweight, so my team took them at their word and asked them what weight they wanted to fight at and they chose the weight,” added the former American boxer.

Mayweather never had problems with the weight

During the same conversation, the Atlanta ’96 Olympic medalist, who finished his career undefeated, reiterated that he never had any problems with the weight in which he fought the Guadalajara superstar, with Canelo having lost his super welterweight titles in that fight.

“For me, the weight was not a problem; I would have fought anyway, even if we had agreed on 154 pounds instead of 152,” Mayweather recalled.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic this week makes his return to the BNP Paribas Open, where the 36-year-old is competing for the first time since 2019.

Should Djokovic collect a record-extending 41st ATP Masters 1000 trophy this fortnight, it would mark his sixth Indian Wells crown, breaking his tie with rival Roger Federer for most titles in the California desert. Djokovic triumphed in Indian Wells in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

After not playing in Indian Wells or Miami last year, the Serbian is defending zero points this month, meaning he could also strengthen his claim on World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Carlos Alcaraz will drop champion’s points in Indian Wells while Jannik Sinner, No. 2 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, defends 960 points throughout the Sunshine Double.

The top seed Djokovic will play his first match since his Australian Open semi-final defeat to Sinner against a qualifier or World No. 69 Australian Aleksandar Vukic.

Australian Open 2024: Djokovic Defeats Etcheverry To Ease Into fourth Round

Just two titles shy of 100 tour-level trophies, Djokovic is seeded to meet either American Tommy Paul or newly minted ATP 500 Dubai champion Ugo Humbert in the fourth round before a potential quarter-final with Casper Ruud or Hubert Hurkacz.

Djokovic also has the opportunity in Indian Wells to become just the third man in history to reach 1,100 tour-level wins. He begins the week on 1,094 victories, trailing only Jimmy Connors (1,274) and Roger Federer (1,251) on the all-time leaderboard. Assuming that he does not receive a walkover this fortnight, with six wins to take the title Djokovic would hit the 1,100-wins milestone, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Tiger Woods was back out on the golf course on Monday after the 82-time PGA Tour winner competed in the Pro-Member event at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida

Rory McIlroy earned the bragging rights over his close friend and business partner Tiger Woods, as the pair competed in the Seminole Pro-Member in Florida on Monday.

The Pro-Am event included a whole host of names from the world of golf and business, while seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady took headline billing alongside Woods and McIlroy. Woods was partnered up with PGA of America CEO, Seth Waugh whilst McIlroy had the chance to play alongside his father, Gerry.

And whilst neither pair were able to win the event outright, the McIlroy duo were able to get the better of Woods and Waugh, finishing a single shot ahead of the all-American pair in the net (after handicaps) leaderboard in a tie for 22nd.

Overall, Erik Van Rooyen and John Pinkman claimed the title on the net side of the event, whilst Mackenzie Hughes and Frank Edwards carded the best gross score. For Woods however it would no doubt have been nice to get back out on the golf course following yet another set back last month.

Here's what Tiger Woods told Rory McIlroy in fascinating hot-mic chat

The 15-time major champion made his first PGA Tour start of the year at the Genesis Invitational, but has often been the case in recent years, his tournament was cut short. Woods was forced to withdraw from the second round in Los Angeles in February, but this time it centred around illness rather than injury.

With Woods seemingly comfortable with the ankle injury that had kept him out for almost eight months in 2023, he was then taken ill with influenza and forced to pull out just six holes into day two. The tournament host was seen being taken from course to the clubhouse in a golf cart, and appeared visibly unwell. An ambulance arrived on the scene in the aftermath of the withdrawal, but Woods left some time after by car. Woods then took to social media to provide an update on his health to fans, with those watching on once again fearing the worst over his PGA Tour future.”I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational due to illness, which we now know is influenza,” he tweeted. ‘I am resting and feeling better. Good luck to the players this weekend. I’m disappointed to not be there and want to thank Genesis and all the fans for the support.”

Francis Ngannou’s trainer Dewey Cooper has tipped his fighter to claim victory over Anthony Joshua on Friday night and go on to become the heavyweight champion of the world. The former UFC champion nearly clinched a shock win over Tyson Fury on his professional boxing debut and takes on Joshua next, with the winner likely to be among the contenders for the next title shot.

Francis Ngannou’s trainer Dewey Cooper has fired a warning to Anthony Joshua ahead of their highly anticipated heavyweight boxing clash on Friday night in Saudi Arabia.
Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, nearly caused a seismic upset against Tyson Fury on his professional boxing debut, flooring ‘The Gypsy King’ in the third round before losing via split decision.
Next up for the Cameroonian is a showdown with Joshua, who is coming off the back of three successive victories as he plots a route back to the title.
But Cooper is confident Ngannou is going to thwart the Brit’s hopes and once again defy the odds.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Cooper said: “Can he go one better? Absolutely. That’s the goal and that’s the plan.
“In the Tyson Fury fight, we told you guys he was going to at least drop him once, that he could win the fight. We mean our words; this is not poetry, not fantasy.
“I know Joshua is your guy, you’re supposed to support him, but just know what he’s up against. He is up against a man who has proven life wrong from childhood all the way up.”
In the UFC, Ngannou was renowned for his devastating power, earning knockout victories in 10 of his 12 wins in the promotion.
It seemed to translate immediately when he swapped the octagon for the boxing ring as he sent Fury to the canvas, but Cooper says it’s not the only weapon in his arsenal.
“He has gargantuan power. It’s natural, in both fists. If he lands clean, bad things are going to happen for Joshua,” Cooper added.
“His precision is on point, his mentality is on point. It’s going to be one heck of a fight.
“We’re going to gain more from that first outing than anyone’s expectations could be. He’s going to be a much better, much more improved fighter than in his first outing against Tyson Fury.

“Beware and be worried if you’re a Joshua fan.”
Such is the confidence of the Ngannou team, they are already targeting the winner of the unification bout between Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on May 18, live on TNT Sports Box Office.
“He wins [Friday], the goal will be to become unified world boxing champion – and that will be a great thing,” Cooper continued.

Jarrell Miller’s career can still be rebuilt, according to his promoter Dmitriy Salita.

The disgraced heavyweight lost his undefeated record in December when he was stopped by Daniel Dubois in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the same evening on which Otto Wallin, Salita’s other leading heavyweight, fought Anthony Joshua and was also stopped.

Miller, 35 and from New York, served three drug bans before he was presented with the biggest opportunity of his career since 2019 — the world heavyweight title fight with Joshua that didn’t happen because he tested positive for GW501516, a metabolic performance enhancer.

Before being installed as Dubois’ opponent he fought, in a largely overlooked occasion, Lucas Browne, but Dubois’ profile is such that during fight week there were vulgar suggestions that Miller and Joshua ought to still fight.

That Miller not only lost but was stopped by a fighter whose reputation had also suffered in defeat by Oleksandr Usyk made his options even more limited. Boxing is far from a sport that consistently punishes those for brushes with the law but a month later Miller was arrested in Florida for allegedly body slamming the employee of a car dealership, potentially leaving him even more stranded than he was before.

“It is,” Salita responded when it was put to him that it is a long road back Miller is faced with. “It was a fight for him to win, and he didn’t really show up and do what we felt he could. It’s to Daniel Dubois’ credit, and [Dubois’ trainer] Don Charles — they fought an incredible fight.

“When I thought Daniel Dubois would break he didn’t break. When the going got tough he got going — so, much credit to him for being in incredible condition. Jarrell put a lot of pressure on him; was 100lbs heavier than him. That’s a lot to deal with. He did a great job.

“Jarrell is fighting his way back into shape. If he can maintain peace outside of the ring and stay focused, with a win or two he can get a shot at one of the big guys again.”

When asked about potential opponents Salita mentioned Deontay Wilder, who also lost on the same night as Miller and Wallin — against Joseph Parker, jeopardising plans for Wilder to fight Joshua.

“[Miller would] like to be able to come back in May or June,” the promoter continued. “There was some conversation about him fighting on the March 8 [Joshuna-Ngannou] show, but what happened, happened. He couldn’t travel, and he had to recover from the fight with Daniel Dubois.

“So yeah, May, June — the heavyweight division is competitive because everybody is fighting everybody. Which is great. Jarrell and Deontay Wilder may be an interesting fight — they’re coming off sub-par performances. So I do think that there’s big fights out there for Jarrell. He only has one loss in the ring, so he definitely deserves another shot. Daniel Dubois, on paper and in the ring, is the best fighter that he’s fought.

“My hope is that he learns from the experience, gets better, and comes back and gives it another shot. At the end of the day, it’s up to Jarrell. He has talent; he has personality. He’s getting opportunities, so it’s up to Jarrell to put his best foot forward to be the best he can be.”

Terence Crawford landed in Puerto Rico for the Amanda SerranoNina Meinke fight. However, the fight got canceled due to Serrano’s injury, but still, it turned out to be a decent event overall. Crawford made his presence known to the world when he entered the venue. However, that wasn’t the sole purpose of his arrival in Puerto Rico.

After attending the fight in San Juan on Saturday, the next day he flew out to Bayamón. Why? Well, it was to receive an honor from the World Boxing Organization. Even though Crawford doesn’t have any fight lined up as such, he’s still managed to stay relevant and is considered a top-notch modern-day boxer.

Terence Crawford says he “deserved” to receive the great honor

On Sunday, the WBO organized an event in Bayamón, Puerto Rico at the Monterrey Boxing Academy. This is where they celebrated to acknowledge the might of Boxing Pound x Pound fighter Terence Crawford. So, it was specially conducted to honor ‘Bud’ and present him with the ‘Ring of Power’.

The WBO President himself shared his vision for Bud’s future.

When is Crawford fighting next?

While fans gear up for the upcoming clash between WBO light middleweight champion Tim Tszyu and veteran Keith Thurman, whispers of a future welterweight showdown are swirling. The WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel dropped a not-so-subtle hint during a press conference.

Terence Crawford might be back in the ring soon. It also brings a new spin to the Tszyu-Thurman fight. Even Tszyu seemed excited about his potential bout against Crawford if he wins against Thurman on March 30. Anyway, Paco remained a bit vague during his interview with FightHype, he said, “I don’t know what we happen but but but we’ll be soon.”
