Journeyman Paul Butlin fought several big-name heavyweights during his career but claims only one man knocked him out cold.

The 41-year-old went the distance with Derek Chisora twice before testing himself against Lucas Browne when he was a heavyweight star on the rise in 2012.

Anthony Joshua is the biggest name on Butlin’s record. They squared off in AJ’s second professional fight, well before he became a two-time world champion and a boxing superstar.

Butlin was stopped in two rounds, but avoided the same fate Francis Ngannou suffered against Olympic gold medallist Joshua at ‘Knockout Chaos’ in his most recent fight.

In fact, Butlin avoided suffering a true knockout until his very final fight when he squared off against Kash Ali, the man whom Joe Joyce hopes to beat to get his career back on track.

“I’ve already fought Kash Ali, and I got sparked in the last 10 seconds,” Butlin said on TikTok in response to a fan telling him to end his boxing retirement for a fight with 6ft 6in heavyweight.

“It was my last fight…I was fat as f***. I was a big, fat slammer. I wasn’t really training. I just took the fight thinking I could do it as usual.

“I was winning the fight on aggression – you can watch it yourself on YouTube. I was a fat slob, that’s the only thing. I can’t watch it because I look a mess.

“I think it was the last eight seconds, 10 seconds, he bowls a right hand over the top. Broke his hand, but he knocked me out. I was never knocked out in 41 fights before he sparked me.”

Butlin, who has become a bailiff since walking away from boxing, says he immediately knew his time in the sport was up after facing Ali in June 2016.

He added: “I got up and my mate who I was with, I just said ‘This is it. I’m done. I can’t do it, it’s too dangerous.’

“I was 40 years old. It was my 41st fight, and I just thought, ‘Do you know what? F*** this. I’ve got to get out with my marbles or God knows where it’s going to end up.’

“And that was my last fight.”

Joyce will hope to avoid suffering the same fate as Butlin as he looks to get his career back on track following back-to-back stoppage losses against Zheili Zhang.

Francis Ngannou didn’t feel quite right in the moments leading up to his fight against Anthony Joshua, though he makes no excuses for his loss.

In just his second professional boxing match, the former UFC heavyweight champion found not even a fraction of the success he did in losing a razor-close decision to Tyson Fury. Instead, he suffered a knockdown in the first round and then got planted on the canvas in similar fashion in the second.

The end came just after Ngannou got back to his feet. Joshua blasted him with a huge overhand right that shut the lights out in dramatic fashion. Ngannou knew getting knocked out by Joshua was a real possibility, but even he didn’t expect it to go down like that.

“We all knew it could happen,” Ngannou said during an Instagram Live session on Wednesday. “I wasn’t seeing it happen like that, but I always knew it could happen. At least, I was always prepared for that.”

Before he walked to the ring that night, Ngannou said something didn’t feel quite right as he warmed up backstage. He’s sure it’s a feeling some of his past opponents have probably felt going against him, which is why he’s not diminishing Joshua’s performance.

“I remember being in the locker [room] trying to warm up, and bro, it wasn’t going,” Ngannou said. “I was falling asleep. I’m sweating, but I’m falling asleep.

“But I assume that’s how some people I have fought, some people that I beat have felt before, but it was basically my first time to feel that. That’s why I kind of took a couple days out, I took some time for me. I obviously had to reflect on everything that’s happened through the fight.”

Ngannou didn’t address the timing of the fight, but the card from Saudi Arabia went on for several hours, and the main event didn’t take place until after 3 a.m. local time.

Perhaps that played some part in how Ngannou felt as he warmed up, but he didn’t want to take away from Joshua’s victory. He also refused to put any of the blame on his coaches or teammates, because ultimately he knows everybody did their job that night … except him.

“Heads up to Anthony Joshua, to his team, that executed their plan properly,” Ngannou said. “Hats off to my team, too, because they did a great job. I think I was the one that just didn’t execute the plan properly and maybe didn’t feel completely present. I was the only one that didn’t show up, let’s say that.

“Everybody showed up and did what should have been done. No blame to anybody. All the blame is just about me. That’s the game.”

In the aftermath of the fight, Ngannou said he didn’t have any lingering effects from the knockout, though he’s seen doctors and already has an appointment scheduled with a neurologist. That said, he isn’t rushing to compete again, but it’s not necessarily over concerns about his health.

Instead, Ngannou said he wants to decompress after a very busy few months. He fought Fury for 10 rounds this past October and then effectively shifted gears to get ready for Joshua in March.

“I was conscious right after [the knockout], and since then everything’s been good,” Ngannou explained. “Still going to run some medical work, just in case.

“Right now, I don’t know exactly what the fight I will be looking for next. I know that I’m going to take some time to rest up, focus on myself, and then when I’m ready I will get back to training. Therefore we can start to discuss the fights. As for now, we will just live the life. Because always remember, it doesn’t matter what is your profession, there’s always a life, we have a life going on that will continue to go.”

Final Punch Stats Released For Anthony Joshua's Win vs Francis Ngannou

Despite the setback this past weekend, Ngannou insists he’s not done with boxing, and he definitely plans on living up to his commitment to compete in the PFL. But he can’t say for certain what’s next. He knows there are plenty of challenges to conquer across both sports.

“I’m not done with boxing, I’m not done with MMA,” Ngannou said. “Basically right now, I have an opponent now in the PFL in Renan Ferreira. That will be my future opponent in the PFL, but again, I basically have a lot of fights in the future. I can still combine [sports], I will still be back in action. Not because I’m more comfortable in MMA that I will let boxing go. I’m still going to do both.

“It’s part of what we do. We take challenges. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t work. But we are working on it.”

With Ferreira waiting in the PFL, Ngannou is still open to any potential opponents in boxing, which includes a potential showdown with fellow knockout artist Deontay Wilder. He’s not making any decisions yet, but he plans on staying busy once he’s ready to fight again.

Golfing legend Tiger Woods is widely expected to be part of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this week, which would be part of the natural progression of the plan he has for his complete return. This plan consisted on playing one tournament per month, which includes major championships. But last month, Tiger was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational at Riviera citing what he called the flu as the reason for not participating. Woods was driven off the course in the middle of his second round. Nine days ago, Tiger seemed okay to play the annual Seminole pro-member tournament and was striking the bal remarkably well.

Tiger officially misses the Players Championship

But as the deadline to announce his participation to the Players Championship came, Tiger Woods‘ name was missing from the confirmed players’ list. Nobody has heard a thing from him to why he is not playing. On the other hand, Tiger doesn’t need to explain himself to why he isn’t playing this one. The people are curious to know the reason this happened, especially because Woods normally doesn’t head into the Augusta National Masters having only played a round and a half of one golf tournament this year. The last time Tiger Woods played the Players Championship was back in 2019, just before winning the historic Masters Championship in April that same year.

No. 1 in the world Scottie Scheffler echoes every other golf star’s sentiments for not having Tiger in this tournament. Saying: “I wish I had a crystal ball and I could tell you how many of those [tournaments] we had left. He’s definitely the best player I’ve ever seen, and I think he’s the best player we’ve ever had. Anytime you can stand up there and walk alongside him and compete in the same golf tournament as him is really special. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with him at the Masters a couple years ago. It was the day he made the 10. He’s just so much different than the rest of us.

“He’s won so many golf tournaments, and he makes a 10 on No. 12 at Augusta, and he birdies five of the last six holes, and it’s Sunday. I mean, it’s completely meaningless to him; like at that stage in his career, what’s the point? And for him just to step up there and completely turn it around … I kid you not, he hit still to this day, three of the best iron shots I’ve ever seen hit coming into those last few holes, and it was just unbelievable to watch. Anytime that we can get him out here competing and playing, I think it’s really special for all of us.”

Novak Djokovic’s upset loss earlier this week did not come without some controversy.

Luca Nardi, the 123rd-ranked player in the world, upset the world’s best in Djokovic Monday at Indian Wells, beating him 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 32 of the BNP Paribas Open.

During the second set, there was a moment when Nardi seemed surprised by an “in” call and casually hit the ball back over the net. After some apparent confusion, Nardi won the point, which led to Djokovic complaining to the official about a potential hindrance.

Djokovic claimed Nardi “literally stopped,” but the chair umpire said just because Nardi stopped “doesn’t mean the point stops.”

After the match, the two seemed to have a contentious discussion. It’s still unclear what was said, but the consensus on social media was Djokovic was shaming Nardi for the point.

The seemingly stern talk led to a lot of backlash.

“Appalling that Djokovic brought up the stopping play incident when he shook Nardi’s hand at the net 1) that point had nothing to do with the outcome of the match, 2) it’s not Nardi’s call to make, 3) umpire made the right call. “Stopping” happens all the time and never called,” wrote tennis writer Ricky Dimon.

X user @TroubleFault said the act was a “new low” for Djokovic.

“Absolutely disgraceful, Novak! He did nothing wrong [for f—s sake, you are just being a sore loser!” said another.

Fans usually aren’t in favor of players moving between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.

But one of the greatest Olympic athletes of all-time appears to be thrilled about it when it comes to one player.

The Bears agreed to a two-year deal with former Packers’ safety Jonathan Owens this week. Owens is the husband of star U.S. gymnast Simone Biles.

The couple began dating in 2020 and became engaged in February 2022. They were married in April 2023.

And while Taylor Swift was capturing headlines for her romance with Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and her appearances at Chiefs games, Biles was a regular at Lambeau Field this season.

And while she has some viral moments interacting with Packers’ fans, she’s apparently a big fan of the move to Chicago for practical reasons.

Owens, who will be entering his sixth NFL season, spent his first four seasons in Houston. He thanked Green Bay and Packers fans for their support. Owens had 84 total tackles and a forced fumble last season.
Biles, who is preparing for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, is the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history. She will compete in Michigan in November.

Not long after Conor Benn and Manny Pacquiao came face-to-face in Saudi Arabia, Benn’s bitter domestic rival Chris Eubank Jr. teased a fight poster advertising a contest between himself and Terence Crawford.

While there has been no confirmation whatsoever from Eubank’s side or Team Crawford that a potential fight between the middleweight from Brighton in the UK and the brilliant Omaha welterweight could actually happen, Crawford and Eubank do at least share the same trainer, Brian “BoMac” McIntyre, and it is a bout Benn would like to see.

“I think it will be a great fight, well, not a great fight, it will be a very one-sided fight, but I’d like to see the fight because I’d like to see Eubank get smashed to pieces,” said Benn.

“I think everyone looks at Eubank because he’s easy work. After his last few performances, he hasn’t looked great at all. He’s definitely on a downhill trajectory.”

Benn and Eubank had been due to fight at the end of 2022, until two positive VADA tests side-lined Benn, who has not boxed in the UK since. He has subsequently fought in Florida and Las Vegas, and there have been talks with Manny Pacquiao about a possible bout in May or June in Saudi Arabia.

Benn is not sure that the idea of Crawford moving up to tackle Eubank is not a hoax.

“I’m not a betting man, but if I was I’d bet you I can almost guarantee you that that’s all smoke; smoke and mirrors,” predicted Benn. “It’s not happening, it’s all rubbish, but obviously Eubank wants the fight with me, so he ain’t fighting Janibek [Alimkhanuly], so why’s he fighting another welterweight? With the same trainer? Do you know what I mean?”

Talking to BoxingScene, Benn sounded fatigued by the very mention of Eubank’s name. Does he think that fight has gone for good, despite promoter Eddie Hearn predicting it would do record numbers in the UK?

“Who knows?” said Benn. “I don’t really have much interest in him. I’m a 147 fighter. That’s the reality of it, I’m 147, and the guys I’ve fought in my last fights were quite big, and also in 10-ounce gloves, so I can’t wait to get back in those eight-ounce gloves and do some serious damage. There’s definitely a massive difference in the gloves. Put 10s on and put eights on and feel the difference. But with Eubank, yeah, that’s probably the only fight I’d go up to 160 for.”

The Benn-Eubank debate has been ferocious in British boxing circles for several reasons, not least because Benn would be jumping up two weight classes to fight in a division he would not otherwise be bothered with, and because Eubank Jr. for many, including his famous father, should not be boxing at middleweight any longer, rather at 168lbs.

Terence Crawford vs. Chris Eubank Jr - Conor Benn has his say on potential fight | DAZN News GB

“Let’s see if there’s any uproar about him [Eubank Jr.] fighting a welterweight [Crawford] again, and let’s see if there’s any uproar at him fighting at 160,” Benn added, of the Crawford-Eubank rumour. “It’s ridiculous. The public pick and choose what’s suitable and what’s not suitable, when it suits.”

Benn is awaiting news of a hearing after the British Boxing Board of Control and UKAD appealed a decision by the National Anti-Doping Panel to allow Benn to return to the ring in the United Kingdom.

There is no question Benn wants to get in the world title mix, but he also sees another lucrative path given the demands of vast sections of the British public, not least finishing the rivalry of the Eubank and Benn fathers from the 1990s, and the constant spectre of Sheffield’s former IBF champion Kell Brook returning to the ring.

JUST IN ;Terence Crawford claims one fighter would smash Edgar Berlanga

“People want big fights,” Benn continued. “That’s what the public wants. World titles don’t mean what they used to mean, which is a crazy thing to say. I think with the interims, the silvers, the diamonds, the supers, it’s like world titles don’t mean what they used to mean, and it feels like the public just wants the mega fights, and the mega fights for me are the names you mentioned. Even though I still want to win a world title, but we’ve called for [Mario] Barrios and the only way these guys are going to fight me are if I’m mandatory.

“We’ll see what happens. I just want to fight and whoever that is, no problem.”

Brook was also in Saudi Arabia at the Anthony Joshua-Francis Ngannou fight last week, but while Benn talked business with Manny Pacquiao, there were no commercial discussions with Brook.

“I saw him briefly, I didn’t speak to him but that’s another fight I know the public may be interested in,” Benn went on. “But I’ll fight anyone. I really will fight anyone.”

UPDATE ;Terence Crawford insists he the best option to fight Canelo Alvarez

Asked about the hangover of the appeal looming large, and public opinion – where Benn still is divisive but he has retained a significant UK fanbase – he said: “I just want this to be done.

“I can’t carry on caring what people think. What’s done is done. It is what it is. I can’t go, ‘Oh, he thinks this, she thinks that,’ because it’s actually got to a stage where I don’t really care, to be honest.”

According to co-manager Shelly Finkel, Deontay Wilder is still hopeful about seeing his longtime foe Anthony Joshua in combat.

Ever since he started his career as a heavyweight, Tyson Fury has always had detractors who underestimate him for one reason or the other. And every single time, he comes out on top to prove why he is one of the best in boxing history. To former champ Carl Froch, watching Anthony Joshua easily get rid of Francis Ngannou in just two rounds proves Tyson Fury is on the decline. He even thinks that the upcoming fight against Oleksandr Usyk is not going to happen, he believes it will get scrapped. And if it does happen, Tyson Fury will be handed his first professional defeat. Because Froch is convinced that Fury lost his fight against Francis Ngannou.

Speaking at the Boxing Writers Club Froch said: “Fury must have just been having a really bad night – or, like I think, Fury’s past his best. He’s seen better days. I study the sport and I study the fights, and Tyson Fury used to throw 30-plus feints a round. Feint, feint. Draw his opponent in, feint. Double jab, right hand. He’s not doing the feints anymore. He’s doing four or five feints. He’s slow on his feet. He’s been knocked down five times [in recent years]. When you’re hitting the floor and getting hit on the chin and not throwing feints and not as busy as you used to be, that means you’re past your best and you’re on the decline and you’re on the slide.”
