Boxing purists love to see heavyweights battle it out in the ring. It’s why so many are so excited to see Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk lock horns for undisputed glory next month.

It’s also why a bunch of fans have wanted to see Anthony Joshua face Deontay Wilder for a long time now. The fight has been rumored to be in the works for several years, and was slated to happen after both boxers fought on the same card on December 23.

Hailed as the greatest female boxer of her generation, Claressa Shields continues to dominate the boxing world with her unparalleled prowess. The Flint, Michigan native, who holds a perfect record of 14 wins and no losses, is scheduled to speak at the upcoming Benzinga 2024 Draft Event in Detroit.

A Record-Breaking Career

Shields, who first captured public attention by securing gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, has surpassed numerous records in her illustrious career. She is notably the first male or female boxer to claim undisputed championship titles in two different weight classes during the four-belt era, a remarkable feat in the highly competitive sport of boxing.

Her recent triumph over Savannah Marshall in the U.K. marked a significant milestone. With a strategic unanimous decision victory, she avenged her only amateur loss. This match, celebrated as the most-viewed women’s professional boxing event ever, attracted over 2 million viewers.

In June 2023, Shields returned to Michigan, where she defended her titles against Maricela Cornejo at the Little Caesars Arena. Despite the last-minute opponent change, Shields dominated the match, leading to a comprehensive victory. Her performance solidified her status in boxing and showcased her ability to engage and captivate the local audience.

Rory McIlroy is in line to receive about $50m as the wait for an agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund goes on

Tiger Woods has received an email from Sawgrass HQ informing him that he will receive up to $100 million in equity for staying loyal to the PGA Tour, with Rory McIlroy benefitting possibly to the tune of $50m for not joining LIV.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, pressed the button on the ultra-personal messages that have been eagerly awaited since Strategic Sports Group – a consortium of US investors led by Liverpool FC owner Fenway Sports – pumped $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises, the new for-profit company, three months ago.

Approximately two thirds of that figure will be divvied up as equity to 193 golfers, although with $750 million to be split among the 36 superstars adjudged by the circuit to be most deserving the sums will be wildly different. Little wonder, therefore, that Monahan and his management team have been at pains to keep the breakdown confidential.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to receive massive loyalty payouts from PGA Tour after equity investment, per report - CBSSports.com

The Tour has already explained to its members that a primary factor in determining who obtains what is a metric called ‘career points’, which, as it says on the tin, awards marks for achievements on Tour for however long the players have been competing.

Other factors will be how they have fared in the Player Impact Program(PIP) – introduced three years ago largely to stave off the threat of the breakaway league – which rewards players who have had the largest impact on the Tour’s business: tickets, sponsorships, media consumption and fan engagement. Woods has already received $35 million in PIP payments, while McIlroy, who topped last year’s program, has pulled in $30.5 million from this source of income.

UPDATE :TIGER WOODS LISTED AS ACTIVE FOR MASTERS GOLF TOURNAMENT, FUELING SPECULATION OF AUGUSTA NATIONAL RETURN

Inevitably, Woods, with 82 Tour titles, will be miles clear in the overall standings and insiders forecast he could secure as much as two times more than any other player in the sliding-scale system.

PGA Giving Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Others Massive Payouts

Phil Mickelson would have been second had he not jumped ship to LIV – the rebels are obviously excluded – although the new entity and this scheme would almost certainly not have come to fruition but for the formation of the Saudi-funded league and, in part, Mickelson’s role in the sporting civil war.

With three victories in the FedEx Cup – basically the PGA Tour money list – McIlroy will be Woods’s nearest pursuer and there will follow the likes of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who will be due equity worth about $30 million.

Annual equity awards for other PGA players

Of course, with Jon Rahm landing an upfront fee of $450 million to defect late last year, all of these names would have acquired far, far more if they had succumbed to the Saudi offers. And this record payday does not mean money in the bank. The recipients will be told how many equity units they have been granted and what the fair market value is at this juncture. They will not be able to cash in immediately and then suddenly sign for LIV.

Inside Tiger Woods' blueprint for a massive 2024

After four years, 50 per cent of their equity will be vested, with another 25 per cent two years later and the remaining amount two years after that. They will also have to fall in line with the rules, which as well as not decamping, involve meeting the minimum requirements for Tour membership and, if not, providing services such as sponsors meets and media appearances.

The lucky three dozen will rub their hands, but the next 64 players will also collect $75 million in equity between them. The next tranche will see a total of 57 players sharing $30 million and another $75 million will be carved up between the 36 players considered living legends who have retired. In each group, career points will be the overriding determinant. Going forward, the Tour has pledged to award equity of $100 million on an annual basis rewarding those such as second-year sensation Ludvig Aberg who are quickly picking up career points.

Naturally, the equity will grow, despite the Tour’s recent poor TV ratings as the dilution of talent because of the split takes its toll. Nobody is expecting it to fall. And if the Tour can agree a deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund in the ongoing negotiations then the players hope their stocks could explode. If that remains uncertain then at least one thing appears assured: the current batch of professionals are not going poor anytime soon.

After over a year away from the ring following an emphatic win against Ryan Garcia while also dealing with legal issues, Gervonta Davis is back in action.

“Tank” competes in the second Premier Boxing Champions-led Amazon Prime PPV event against Frank Martin on June 15. It is a non-title fight in Las Vegas.

A 2012 Golden Gloves champion, Davis is also a former super featherweight champion. The Baltimore-born fighter won the WBA (Regular) lightweight title against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2019. Davis won two fights in 2023, his last contest being a money fight in April against Ryan Garcia. The 29-year-old beat Garcia following several brutal body shots.

Dubbed “the face of boxing” after the Garcia win, Davis immediately dealt with a fight outside the ring. He appeared in court for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident in November 2020. Pleading guilty to four traffic offenses, Davis was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest. However, he violated the terms of his home detention and served the remainder of his sentence in prison.

Back to focusing on boxing, Davis looks to continue where he left off.

Simone Biles‘ withdrawal from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to the Twisties was a defining moment, one she seeks redemption from as she aims for her fourth Olympics run in Paris. The fear of twisting and lack of spatial awareness that came with the Twisties made Simone want “to sulk in my feelings and to be by myself.”

But her celebrity status as a gymnastics icon and seven-time Olympic medalist made this emotional release impossible. As she boarded the plane back to America, her responsibilities as a sports icon had to be fulfilled, concealing an untold reality of post-Tokyo Olympics trauma behind her smiling demeanor, a reality that “nobody knew.”

However, behind the scenes, she was grappling with the traumas of the Twisties and began seeking therapy to cope. Simone explained, “I can’t recall what time our show started, but say it started at seven; I would be in therapy from like 4:30 to 6. And then I would give myself an hour to get ready.” She candidly shared moments when Jordan Chiles would walk into her room and find her “bawling my eyes out trying to put on my makeup because I’m talking to my therapist about the Olympic experience.”

Luis Nery is challenging for the undisputed titles, with Buster Douglas as his inspiration for success.

Nery takes on Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue on May 6 in a huge challenge for the undisputed super-bantamweight world titles at the Tokyo Dome on his rival’s home soil.

Inoue is considered one of the best fighters in the sport at the moment, a pound-for-pound great, with the challenger having a huge uphill task to navigate on away soil.

But two-weight world champion Nery, has been left inspired by Buster Douglas’ monumental upset win over heavyweight Mike Tyson in February 1990, which happened at that very same arena.

“It’s the same. This is bigger than being a world champion. It’s four belts. It’s undisputed.

“I think that Inoue shouldn’t have taken this fight. I have nothing to lose. I’m not a champion.

“I’m not at the top like him. I’m going for all the marbles. I’m coming with everything. I will take risks, and I’m willing to die in the ring.

“This is an important fight. It deserves to be in an arena that is just as important like the Tokyo Dome. And I think it’s a sign. If Mike Tyson can lose his unbeaten record there, then so can Naoya Inoue.

“Now, Mike Tyson was actually a monster. He for sure was an assassin. So, I’m happy that they made the fight at Tokyo Dome.”

Buster Douglas: I wasn't impressed with the success Mike Tyson was having

‘The Monster’ has yet to be defeated in his 26 fights, and his record has a resemblance to that of Tyson at the time, who went into his clash with Douglas with 37 wins undefeated.

Tyson had marched to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion aged 20, and was huge favourite to win in his debut in Japan.

But Douglas came in as a huge underdog and stopped the legend in the tenth, knocking him down for the first time in his career and leaving him unable to make the referee’s count.

The Mexican has just lost once in his own time in the professional ranks in a narrow loss to Brandon Figueroa in May 2021, but is training to launch his name into the boxing stratosphere forever.

One man who knows what a punch from Mike Tyson feels like is Peter McNeeley, who felt the ferocious power in 1995.

‘Hurricane’ McNeeley was plucked from relative obscurity to face Tyson in ‘Iron Mike’s’ first fight back after being released from prison, having been locked up since 1992.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion was convicted of the rape of Desiree Washington and sentenced to six years in prison, although he was granted parole halfway through his sentence.

Following rampant debate over who Tyson would face in his comeback fight – including reports of a potential clash with George Foreman – Tyson’s promoter Don King settled on the lesser-known McNeeley.

The fight took place on August 19, 1995 in a bout billed as ‘He’s Back’ at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

McNeeley did a lot talking in the build-up but was unable to back up his words in the ring as he was dispatched in only 89 seconds.

Recalling what it was like going toe-to-toe with Tyson during a wide-ranging interview with Sports Illustrated in 2010, 15 years after his biggest night in the ring, McNeeley said his power sticks out.

“At the weigh-in, I was 224Ibs and he was 220. They reweighed us one hour before the fight, after we’d both burned off a lot of nervous energy warming up. He was 216! I was 220.

“Mike Tyson at 216 is all [expletive] speed. The punches that hurt you the worst are the ones that you don’t see.

“It was just crazy. When I met with him much later, he was 240. He was huge. And when I fought him, he was all ripped up.”

Oleksandr Usyk’s team are not confident about Tyson Fury fighting in May, so they’ve already found a replacement.

Oleksandr Usyk and his team have already lined up a replacement fighter for Tyson Fury if the Briton were to pull out of their blockbuster clash once again in Saudi Arabia. The first undisputed heavyweight title fight in 25 years should be taking place next month in Riyadh when Fury, 35, and Usyk, 37, battle it out.

The undefeated British heavyweight hasn’t fought since his controversial split-decision victory over MMA star Francis Ngannou last year, and Usyk’s promoter doesn’t have much confidence that the two heavyweight champions will fulfill their two-fight deal if the Gypsy King was to be beaten next month.

Tyson Fury has withdrawn four times already from this fight.

Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz thinks that Anthony Joshua is finally starting to show the aggression that once defined his career, before he ran into a chunky power puncher with fast hands.

Ruiz was an athletic question mark before he dropped Joshua four times and stopped him to capture three heavyweight titles in their 2019 slugfest in Madison Square Garden. Joshua seemed to emerge from the first fight a little gun-shy, a little tentative. He won the rematch with Ruiz in a carefully calibrated, cautious performance, and his temperament seemed to be more safety-first than full-speed ahead. With two recent knockouts – including a whiplash, highlight-reel KO of Francis Ngannou – Joshua, Ruiz believes, is starting to regain his offensive-minded form.

“He’s getting his momentum back,” Ruiz said on Wednesday before a press conference in Manhattan, New York, to announce his bout with Jarrell Miller on Aug. 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, as part of a stacked card headlined by Terence Crawford and Israil Madrimov. “He’s getting his confidence back. I think that’s the most important thing. He’s doing what he’s supposed to do. I think he’s doing his thing. I’m just happy for him. I would love to have that trilogy with him. He gave me that opportunity. I gave him back that opportunity, and there’s one more. I want to become a two-time heavyweight champion of the world.”

Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs) qualified his remarks by saying that Joshua’s offensive success could be due in part to his opponents.
