Today, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez remains the most dominant boxer of his generation. When one seeks the name of the best fighter of this era, his name tops the list. However, he enjoys this pride despite the few losses he’s suffered on his record. Now, as he prepares for his next stint in the ring, he speaks vividly about the loss Floyd Mayweather gave him more than a decade ago.

In 2013, Floyd Mayweather at 36, decided to fight a young and rising 23-year-old, Canelo Alvarez. The match took place in Las Vegas. The fight gave Canelo not only his pro career’s first loss but also his most devastating to date. While he was majorly seen as an underdog for that matchup, a huge chunk of his fan base remained confident that he would dominate ‘Money’. However, on fight night, through a majority decision, he lost his WBC and Ring magazine super welterweight titles to Mayweather. Years later, when he’s way past that loss, career-wise, he reflects on what the matchup actually meant for him at the time.

How Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez set up Mexican to be the face of boxing 10 years later | Sporting News

Canelo’s fight against Mayweather was noteworthy. While he stood his ground persistently till the end, his punches couldn’t effectively find their mark on an elusive and experienced fighter like Floyd Mayweather who counter-punched his way to victory.

Alvarez jotted down a few points from that matchup as he spoke on a special series PBC is doing ahead of his Jaime Munguia clash. “When I fought Mayweather, he already had a lot of fights in that scenario. He had a lot of experience as well. I felt like I could beat him at that moment. I wasn’t ready for a fight of that magnitude and in that spotlight. I learned many things,” Canelo admitted.

He further added in Spanish (translated by the channel itself), “He’s a very intelligent fighter. The way he handled himself in the ring. How he did things. Calm. Relaxed. I think I learned a lot from the experience. Obviously, it hurt my pride a lot because I wanted to beat the best.” After that fateful night, Canelo was never the same again. He was pretty much unstoppable until a few years ago.

In 2022, against Dmitry Bivol, Canelo’s worst fears came true again. The technical prowess of his Russian opponent fazed Canelo, who lost a second time, though still on points. However, these few losses could not stop him from joining the elite class. In fact, Floyd Mayweather too thinks that the fighter is cut out to join him in the elite club of boxing greats.

When the Munguia fight was announced, Canelo received flak for ducking David Benavidez, who is his mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. Justifying his decision to move over Benavidez, Mayweather, in an interview noted, “A lot of time fighters got to do what’s best for them…You have to live with the decisions that you make. I was in that same situation.”

“He didn’t beat the champions by struggling. He clearly dominated a lot of those guys. He tested his skills. Light heavyweight, he won a title. Then he fought another guy at light heavyweight and came up short,” he explained.

“But, he’s a Future Hall of Fame, a hell of a fighter. Everybody wants their business different, I wish him nothing but the best,” he remarked.

‘AJ’ had previously named Wilder as a potential opponent for his September return…

It looks ever more likely that former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will face either Zhilei Zhang or the winner of Daniel Dubois vs Fillip Hrgovic in his homecoming fight at Wembley Stadium in September. The Watford-born fighter had included former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on a four-man shortlist of potential opponents, but it seems that a clash with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is off the table for now.

Why Joshua Won’t Fight Wilder in September

Boxing fans have been anticipating the fight for years

Joshua named Wilder, alongside Zhang, Hrgovic and Dubois as the names who were in line to share the ring with him later this year. However, even if Wilder defeats Zhang in their fight on the 1st of June, he won’t be facing the Brit.

Boxing: Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder reportedly already have a deal to fight | Marca

Turki Alalshikh – the mastermind behind Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in boxing – is close with Joshua – and has previously told the Londoner that he wants to see him fight the best available opposition for the remaining fights of his career. For as invested as he is in Joshua’s goals, though, Alalshikh has his own ambitions in the sport.

With that in mind, the Saudi chief is hoping Wilder will be able to fight Jared Anderson on his Riyadh Season card on the 3rd of August in Los Angeles, assuming he comes through his bout with Zhang unscathed. Alalshikh wrote on social media:

That news essentially ends the prospect of a Joshua vs Wilder fight in the near future. The pair had been expected to meet in early 2024, before the American’s shock defeat to Joseph Parker last December derailed those plans.

Eddie Hearn says Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua fight is off and it would be a 'mismatch' | talkSPORT

Joshua’s main ambition remains becoming a three-time world champion and – in an ideal world – he would fight the winner of the Oleksander Usyk vs Tyson Fury unification fight in just under three weeks. Unfortunately for the 34-year-old, the bout has an immediate rematch clause, meaning the winner isn’t likely to be available for a title defence until early 2025.

Unbeaten in his last four fights, Joshua is on a roll under his new trainer Ben Davidson and is looking like the fighter who first rose to stardom in the heavyweight division. His most recent win against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou was destructive and is much more credible than it looks on paper, seeing as the Cameroonian took the ‘Gypsy King’ the full distance and even managed to score a knockdown in their fight.

It might not be Fury, Usyk or even Wilder, but a win over Dubois or Hrgovic would certainly help Joshua stake his claim for a shot at the unified heavyweight championship. Both are hungry and ambitious fighters in the division and would relish the opportunity to fight ‘AJ’.

Boxing: Anthony Joshua confirms Deontay Wilder as his next opponent during run-in with fan | Marca

If Joshua wins and Wilder can find a way past both Zhang and Anderson, then the long-awaited fight between the duo could finally become a reality. After falling apart so many times over the last six years, though, nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to a Joshua vs Wilder fight.

Now the GOAT may finally have a successor. Scottie Scheffler has been dubbed the “next Tiger Woods” on several occasions since claiming his second Masters win in three years earlier this month. And not only is he currently ranked world No 1, but he’s also just matched Woods’ achievement for winning four times in five starts at the RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour, per The Independent.

“I talked about it at the beginning of the week – I didn’t show up here just to have some sort of ceremony and have people tell me congratulations,” Scheffler said after the tournament. “I came here with a purpose, got off to a slow start but after that played some really nice golf,” he added.

Per Bleacher Report, Scottie Scheffler’s career earnings stand at about US$86.2 million, with his recent RBC Heritage title earning him US$3.6 million alone.

Scheffler is a devoted Christian, according to US media. “The reason why I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God and all that He’s done in my life,” he explained at a press conference after winning the Masters. “So for me, my identity isn’t a golf score”.

If I don’t have a wife, I would commit suicide,” the former champion accepted. He explained that he needs someone to listen to him and help him make decisions: “I’m a soldier.
