Sebastian Fundora is already on the clock for his first title defense.

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered its newly crowned 154-pound titlist to next face three-division champ Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford. The ruling was applied per the conditional terms by the sanctioning body in its approval for Fundora to challenge previously unbeaten titlist Tim Tszyu.

Fundora won their blood-soaked March 30 Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Prime pay-per-view headliner via split decision to dethrone Tszyu. He also picked up the vacant WBC 154-pound title with the win. A separate mandatory title defense will come with that, though irrelevant to the present task at hand.

Please be advised that March 25, 2024, this Committee granted sanction approval of the Tszyu/Fundora WBO [title fight],” WBO Championship Committee chairman Luis Batista-Salas noted in a ruling obtained by The Ring. “Sanction approval was granted subject to the winner facing next the Mandatory Challenger in the Jr. Middleweight Division, Terence “Bud” Crawford within 180 days after the Tszyu/Fundora bout.

“The foregoing condition was essential for purposes of sanction approval. Therefore, in light of the above and per WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests, the parties are hereby ordered to commence negotiations for the WBO Mandatory Jr. Middleweight Championship.”

The negotiation period will officially begin on Friday, five business days from the March 30 Prime Video Pay-Per-View headliner. Fundora and Crawford will have until April 25 to reach terms and avoid a purse bid hearing.

Fundora is promoted by Sampson Lewkowicz, founder and head of Sampson Boxing, LLC. However, TGB Promotions’ Tom Brown was listed as the point of contact in the letter ordering the fight. TGB is the lead promoter for nearly all PBC-branded events.

Crawford is a promotional free agent and represented by legal advisor Harrison Whitman.

Sebastian Fundora gets April 5 Terence Crawford WBO deadline - World Boxing News

Australia’s Tszyu (24-1, 17 knockouts), No. 2 at 154 (come Tuesday), was previously set to face former 147-pound titlist Keith Thurman in a non-title fight. Those plans were changed when Thurman suffered a torn biceps roughly two weeks out from fight night.

PBC officials raced to not only salvage the show but strengthen the overall lineup.Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs), No. at 154 (come Tuesday), was scheduled to meet Serhii Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs), currently No. 10, in the PPV opener. Their bout was to come with the vacant WBC 154-pound title at stake. A switch was made for Fundora to challenge Tszyu, though politics briefly threatened to get in the way of the fight.

WBO officials were hesitant to sanction the billed unification bout, since it still recognizes Ring/lineal champion Jermell Charlo as the WBC champ. Houston’s Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) has relinquished all four major sanctioning body titles, including the WBC where he is now ‘Champion in Recess.’

The WBO has given Crawford and Fundora a deadline of the end of April – RingSide24

Support was conditionally offered by the WBC despite its initial resistance. It came on the basis that the winner immediately committed to a mandatory title defense versus Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs). The ruling was made after Crawford, The Ring 147-pound champ and pound-for-pound king, enforced his WBO ‘Super Champion’ status. The designation permits its claimants to immediately challenge for a title in a separate weight division during the ordered mandatory period.

On the surface, the order complicates the suggested plans from Saturday’s show.

Fundora was joined in the ring after his win by former unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), No. 1 at 147. It was heavily suggested prior to Saturday that Spence would face the winner of the main event. That theme carried over into the post-fight in-ring interview.

However, there was a difference of opinion between then and the post-fight press conference.

Fundora informed media that he wanted to next face Crawford. It came in stark contrast to claims made by Lewkowicz, who stood the party line and insisted Fundora-Spence made the most business sense.

La OMB ordena Sebastian Fundora vs Terence Crawford

Such a fight will reduce his title load to one, however.

There is also the matter of a deserved Fundora-Tszyu rematch.

Tszyu accepted the makeshift title defense on twelve days’ notice. It came versus an opponent whose physical dimensions required an overhaul at the tail end of training camp. Tszyu prepared for a 5’7” orthodox fighter and career welterweight in Thurman. Fundora is a nearly 6’6” southpaw and a natural junior middleweight.

An early lead evaporated when Tszyu struggled to fight through pouring blood from a cut high atop his scalp. Tszyu inadvertently fell into Fundora’s left elbow during the opening round, which caused the gusher.

Fundora suffered a broken nose from a legal Tszyu punch in the opening round.

Tszyu won on the scorecard of judge Tim Cheatham (116-112). It was overruled by judges Steve Weisfeld (116-112) and David Sutherland (115-113) for Fundora, who made history with the win. At just under 6’6”, he became the tallest fighter ever to win a portion of the 154-pound crown. His victory came while younger sister Gabriela Fundora holds the IBF flyweight title. The two are now the first brother-sister tandem to simultaneously hold major titles.

“Did I mean to say that, me and my big mouth?” he continued. “I got a big mouth, but yeah, that’s the plan,” he reaffirmed. “Queensbury promotion, it’s going to be sick.”

The 40-year-old heavyweight discussed potential venues for Joshua’s assumed fight, mentioning that only one person could sell out Wembley Arena, referring to Joshua’s ability to draw a large crowd. He then suggested Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, describing the venue as a “fantastic” potential destination for fights despite his dislike for the football club.

On March 8, Joshua faced off against Ngannou in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Joshua secured an easy victory in less than two rounds, comfortably overwhelming one of MMA’s most formidable power punchers. Joshua delivered a pair of knockdowns with a trademark straight right hand, sealing his dominance in the match. Ngannou’s defeat proved so humbling that he apologized to his fans and all viewers for his subpar performance.

Joshua will face an extended wait for his next opponent, as the winner of the upcoming heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on May 18 may trigger a championship rematch clause, resulting in further postponement. Previously, Joshua had considered facing Deontay Wilder on the same night as Fury’s clash with Usyk. However, he noted that it would be more attainable for them to headline their own event, possibly in early 2024.

Frank Mir is feeling shortchanged at the end of his MMA career.

During his 23-year run in the sport, Mir has won two UFC titles and picked up high-profile wins over Brock Lesnar, Minotauro Nogueira, and Mirko Cro Cop.

The 44-year-old has also faced legends like Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Daniel Cormier, and Shane Carwin – he even fought boxers Kubrat Pulev and Steve Cunningham.

Most of his career was spent in MMA’s premier promotion where he headlined three pay-per-view cards, including UFC 100 which generated 1.6 million buys and is the third best-selling UFC event of all time.

Despite all his success, Mir has never enjoyed a seven-figure payday and it only recently occurred to him that he should’ve made so much more money for his rematch with Lesnar in 2009.

“Not at all,” he told talkSPORT in April 2023 when asked if he feels like he was fairly compensated for UFC 100.

“For example, I saw a boxing match between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder – their second fight – I think we actually beat their pay-per-view buys.”

Fury vs Wilder 2 was the best-performing fight of the trilogy and it only sold around 800,000 PPVs – but that didn’t stop them from making more than $25 million each.

In fact it was so lucrative they added a third fight, which is said to have brought in around 600,000 buys.

The sheer gulf between the payout he got compared to elite-level boxers, despite outselling them, made Mir curious about the business of MMA.

“That made me realise, ‘Oh, wow! I was the main event of that card, and I didn’t get seven figures and these guys got eight figures.’

“So, that’s one of the things that I want to fix about our sport, when a card makes $25 million the company can keep $10 million but the rest is divided by the fighters.”

Mir is now working with UFL [United Fight League] and believes that by paying fighters their fair share, future legends will be able to live comfortably after retiring.

He said: “When you see an MMA fighter who is struggling after his career, people don’t really say, ‘Oh, he didn’t manage his money well.’ It’s ‘Well, they are not compensated for what they generate.’”

“The show has to make money so we can continue to have a show but at the same time the fighters themselves are the most compensated.”

Mir hasn’t called time on his MMA career yet, despite not competing in the sport since securing a unanimous decision win over Roy Nelson in Bellator five years ago.

Mike Tyson has confirmed that his fight with Jake Paul will be an exhibition contest.

“This is called an exhibition, but if you look up exhibition, you won’t see any of the laws we’re fighting under,” he told Fox News.

Derek Chisora has let slip who he believes Anthony Joshua will be fighting next.

‘Del Boy’ claims AJ will box the winner of Daniel Dubois vs Filip Hrgovic at Wembley Stadium when he makes his return to the ring later this year.

Of course, that is coming from a man who is not directly involved in planning Joshua’s career path, although Chisora is close friends with AJ and is currently represented by his management company, 258 MGT.

“He will fight the winner of Daniel Dubois and (Filip) Hrgovic in Wembley (Stadium),” Chisora told iFL TV.

Meanwhile, Dubois occupies the No.4 spot with the sanctioning body.

“I’m talking, thinking and studying with Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn to do something huge in Wembley in September as a commercial for Riyadh Season,” he said.

One of the few fighters who could sell out the 90,000-seater would be AJ so it would make sense for him to headline that card.

With former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu out for a extended time, the WBO ordered a purse bid for Terence Crawford vs newly crowned champion Sebastian Fundora. The WBO mandates that a 20-day negotiating window between Fundora and Crawford will start Friday April 5th.  Tszyu holds a rematch clause with Fundora, promotor Sampson Lewkowicz obviously feels empowered to delay it for now. Saying at Saturday night’s post-fight news conference that Tszyu needs time to “heal up.” “Tszyu will get the rematch, but not at this moment – not when we need to maximize the money for Fundora,” Lewkowicz told reporters in a side session later Saturday night. “Fundora deserves it.”

One guy who could get in the way of this fight happening, former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KOs)! He placed his bid into the Fundora sweepstakes. He came into the ring after the fight challenging the new crowned champion. “It’s time to get it on,” Spence said. “He got a pretty good height, but we’ll see. We’ll break him down like we always do.”

5 Ways To Fight Like Terence Crawford | Evolve Daily

Opting to fight Spence Jr. instead of Crawford could result in Fundora being stripped for the WBO belt. He could offer to relinquish his WBO belt in that letter as well. Making a fight with Spence Jr. would be for the WBC junior middleweight belt. That idea seems to be more ideal for Lewkowicz who feels like Spence Jr. is a bigger draw than Crawford. “Crawford cannot sell out (a crowd of) 90,000 people in Dallas. Everybody waits … why not Crawford? Let him wait one time, if not twice, and then we’ll go.”

Crawford made a response to Spence Jr. trying to set up a fight with Fundora, implying that he has to get behind him if he wants any action. The question of who will be fighting for the belts will be settled by the end of this month.

On June 29, Teofimo Lopez will potentially face Steve Claggett to defend his WBO Super-Lightweight title. ‘The Takeover’ won against Josh Taylor in June last year. On the other hand, Shakur Stevenson will put his WBC Lightweight title on the line against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 in New Jersey. Both the matches will be organized by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing. However, one must note that the Artem fight will be Shakur’s final bout with Top Rank before the 26-year-old enters free agency.

On July 20th, an unexpected boxing match between 27-year-old Paul will take place against Tyson who is almost 30 years older than him. By the time they fight, the former heavyweight champion will be 58. Since the fight’s inception, multiple people have expressed concerns for the senior fighter’s safety. Relentless, however, the fight seems to be unstoppable now. Does KSI approve of the fight? Well, his clever jab at the fight makes a befitting case.

KSI boldly claims he could beat 54-year-old Mike Tyson in a boxing match as YouTuber insists: 'Age is on my side' | talkSPORT

On his X, formerly Twitter, 30-year-old KSI uploaded a poster of a fight that looked like his next bout in the ring. In his captions, convincing his fans that he was finally back to boxing, he wrote, “I’m back baby!” While fans would have bought the news based on the first lines, the next few things that he wrote made the picture apparent.

KSI added, “Fighting 75 year old legend and former champ. Don’t worry, age ain’t nothing but a number. Forman hits harder and is faster than ever before!” A fight against George Foreman? That’ll raise some eyebrows.

The poster is a parody of what Paul vs. Tyson entails so far. The fight is all set to be the first sporting event under Netflix. Hence, ‘JJ’ has claimed that his fight against Foreman will be streamed on a platform that he called, “NOTflix.” He highlighted certain made-up guidelines like no judges, glove types, and round duration, which had been a contentious issue for the Jake Paul fight earlier. The highlight, however, was the date of the fight – April 1st. That’s today, and it’s April Fool’s Day!

While 27-year-old Paul might be fighting Tyson to prove that he’s gone against a legendary boxer, he’s also doing so to rake some major hype in his record. If KSI were to ever fight Geroge Foreman, almost 45 years older than him, he would employ the same premises to justify the fight that Paul has done for the Tyson fight- “Age ain’t nothing but a number.”

It is also interesting why he chose Foreman. After all, he is considered to be one of the most powerful punchers in history.

‘Big George’ as he was popularly called, was a prolific heavyweight of his era.
