Tyson will be 58-years-old by the time he fights YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul this summer and ‘AJ’ has expressed his concern for his idol ‘Iron Mike’

Anthony Joshua has predicted Jake Paul will beat Mike Tyson – because of the huge age gap.

Boxing legend ‘Iron Mike’ is back in the ring on July 20 when he faces social media star Paul in one of this year’s biggest and most controversial fights. Tyson has admitted the fight will be sanctioned as an exhibition but dismissed claims that he and Paul will be wearing headgear and 18-ounce gloves.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Joshua thinks Paul, who is 30 years younger than Tyson, will win the fight because of the massive age difference. “He’s [Mike Tyson] older now. I pray that he comes out healthy. I think Jake Paul because of youth – that’s the only thing,” Joshua said of the fight whilst appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show.

Joshua has turned over a new leaf in his boxing career having won four consecutive fights and he may have never taken up a career in the ring if it wasn’t for Tyson. ‘AJ’ was caught up in the wrong crowd in his early years, much like Tyson, but was determined to use boxing to turn his life around.

“He was a troublesome kid up until the age of 13 and due to his environment and the way they managed to build his mindset. It wasn’t just his physicality, it was the way they changed his mindset and he managed to become heavyweight champion of the world. It showed if you apply yourself to something you can do anything,” Joshua told iD Boxing.

“The way they moulded this kid, he wasn’t a child prodigy boxer, he was never this young kid who was pencilled in to become heavyweight champion of the world. He was pencilled on to be going to jail or end up dead, but he ended up changing his narrative due to determination, and obviously meeting the right people, and he became the youngest champion ever.”

A padded body protector is no match for Mike Tyson’s fists.

Newly released video shows his trainer, Rafael Cordeiro, woozily spitting out fluid after absorbing two punches from Tyson, the former heavyweight champion, during a training session.

“Mike only knows one speed, and that’s 100 percent, full-speed ahead,’’ said Billy White, who helps train Tyson and was pictured in the video. “He’ll be there full speed on July 20.’’

Tyson, 57, is scheduled to fight Jake Paul, 27, on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

The video footage released by Fight Hub TV was taken in mid-March during four days of training at a martial arts academy in Arizona, according to White.

Cordeiro, who trained Tyson for his exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, is seen wincing during mitt work captured on video during training sessions last month in Arizona.

“Mike obviously has always been known as the baddest man on the planet,’’ White told USA TODAY Sports. “Rafael is the baddest trainer on the planet. He can handle what few others can.’’

Tyson has said he was 100 pounds overweight when he started training for his exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. He weighed in at 222 pounds for the fight, an eight-round bout that ended in a draw as scored by three celebrity judges.

By contrast, Tyson weighed 226 pounds when he began training last month to fight Paul, according to White.

“So weight is not the issue,’’ said White, who boxed with Tyson under famed trainer Cus D’Amato. “It’s getting rid of the rust. You know how it goes.’’

White said Tyson will resume training Monday in Las Vegas after having taken a break in Florida, where he lives with his family, according to White. Tyson also has a home in Las Vegas.

David Benavidez confirms that he will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Gervonta Davis will face Frank Martin on the same card in Houston on June 22nd.

An outstanding boxing card looks to be coming up in early summer. On Wednesday, Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0-0, 27 KO) posted on social media that he would defend his WBA ‘regular’ lightweight crown against Frank Martin (18-0-0, 12 KO) on June 22nd in Houston. On Thursday, that information was confirmed when David Benavidez (28-0-0, 24 KO) revealed on the Fresh&Fit podcast that he will fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1-0, 16 KO) on the same card.

Gervonta has been leaving clues about his return for a few months. After knocking out Ryan García (24-1-0, 20 KO) in his last fight a year ago, he spent 44 days in prison and the rest of 2023 under house arrest and wearing an ankle monitor. He has been prolific about sharing his frustration with not being able to fight on his social networks, hinting that his return to the ring will be in June. There was speculation about a rematch with Isaac Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KO), especially after “Pitbull” won the WBA super lightweight title. A clash with Devin Haney (31-0-0 , 15) never happened after Haney vacated his titles to move up in weight.

Speaking on the Fresh&Fit podcast, Benavidez said, “I don’t know if it is June 15 or June 22, but I will fight for the light heavyweight title and on the same night Gervonta Davis will fight Frank Martin. It will probably be the biggest card of the year. It will be in Las Vegas or Houston.”

Davis seemed to confirm that the fight is on for the 22nd when he tweeted a response to a fan who pointed out that the Toyota Center in Houston was already booked by Megan Thee Stallion for June 15, saying, “I let Meg do her thing… week after.”

Benavidez had been spoiling for a bout with Canelo Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO) to be the undisputed super middleweight champion. He now seems to be tired of waiting and will attack a new division with a difficult opponent.

Frank Martin is undefeated and has never fought for a belt and is seen by many as the second best lightweight behind Tank. Due to face Shakur Stevenson (21-0-0, 10 KO) for the WBC lightweight title, Martin decided not to sign at the last minute.

Joshua is on a collision course with Fury and the rivals could meet at the end of this year for all four heavyweight world titles

Anthony Joshua has warned Tyson Fury he will use his trash talk as fuel when they eventually meet in the ring.

Joshua and Fury have been on a collision course since Joshua became world champion in 2016 but a fight has failed to materialise. Fury now holds three of the heavyweight world titles and will take on fellow champion Oleksandr Usyk on May 18 to crown the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

That would leave Joshua with the chance to become a three-time champion in front of a home crowd before the end of the year. “Around September is when I’ve been told,” he added. “I was hoping June. I’ve got some time to go on dates now and mingle a little bit. I’m training at the minute, I’ve got two months before I get into training camp.

Dubois and Hrgovic have been linked to fight on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s undisputed clash, which takes place in Saudi Arabia on June 1. The IBF world title could be on the line if the organisation forces Fury or Usyk to fight mandatory challenger Hrgovic.

Many of the fight rules are still unclear but when put to Tyson that he would be wearing 16oz gloves and a headguard, he told Fox News : “No, not true, not true at all. This is called an exhibition, but if you look up exhibition, you won’t see any of the laws we’re fighting under. This is a fight.

“I don’t think he’s faster than me. I’ve seen a YouTube video of him at 16 doing weird dancing. That’s not the guy I’m fighting. This is a guy who’s going to try and hurt me, which I’m accustomed to, and he’s going to be greatly mistaken. As the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become because it’s reality, and in reality I’m invincible.”

Tyson hasn’t fought since going eight rounds against fellow legend Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. The 57-year-old said he was extremely out of shape for that fight and he is already training for his bout with Paul despite it still being three months away. Tyson admitted he is scared ahead of his boxing return but thinks the nerves will benefit him.

While the banter ahead of a boxing match is always laden with barbs and threats, one does get the feeling that ahead of Mike Tyson’s July 20th fight with Jake Paul, there is a certain element of justification mixed in with the normal chatter. Indeed, many have called the rules of the fight farcical as they appeared to significantly protect Paul. Interestingly, Tyson has now insisted that while the bout won’t be considered official – it’s an exhibition match – it will not have the restrictions that such matches normally do.

So, what can we expect from Tyson vs Paul?

That’s a good question. For the moment, what we know is that Netflix is set to livestream the event from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Aside from that and a reported $20 million payday for Mike Tyson, not much else is known, including what Jake Paul himself is set to earn. It’s worth noting that according to reports, the promoters of the fight have not provided any details to the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation which could also be why information is scarce.

Tyson Fury’s undisputed world heavyweight title fight with Oleksandr Usyk – aka the “Ring of Fire” clash – has been rearranged for May 18.

The much-hyped encounter had originally been due to take place in Saudi Arabia in February but was postponed after the Briton suffered a “freak cut” above the eye in training.

A statement from Queensbury Promotions on X, formerly known as Twitter, read: “The undisputed heavyweight championship fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been rescheduled to May 18th in Riyadh.”

Fury required medical attention after suffering the injury during a sparring session.

It is the second time his planned fight with Usyk has been delayed after an initial slot in December failed to materialise.

Why was the the fight rescheduled?

The fight was postponed from its original date on February 17 to May 18 after Fury suffered a cut above his eye in sparring caused by an elbow from Agron Smakici.

Smakici tells the story of how the dreaded cut opened up above Fury’s eye that postponed the undisputed clash.

“It was a strange day. Throughout the two weeks, I was sparring with him [Fury] we did hard sparring in the evenings but that day it was at about midday. During the spar, there was a lot of wrestling, and I also do professional wrestling so I had some good moments keeping him in the wrong positions. He was joking around, as he always does, and we were roughing
each other up on the inside.”

Leaked footage from their final sparring session together appeared to show that an elbow caused the cut but Smakici insists this was accidental. “When you see the punch, I know I shot a clear punch but the way he held my head, he was pulling my head forward to him. So, that’s maybe why the elbow came through also. But it was a punch first of all. It was a freak accident.”

What’s at stake?

Boxing will have an undisputed heavyweight champion again after what Fury himself has called a “fight for the ages”.

Fury holds the WBC belt, which he won in 2020 when he beat Deontay Wilder. He has defended that belt three times, against Wilder, Dillian Whyte and, most recently, Derek Chisora.

Usyk has held the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles since beating Anthony Joshua in 2021. He had defended those titles twice: against Joshua and Daniel Dubois.
