The legendary Mike Tyson will officially make his return to a professional boxing ring on the 20th of July. The heavyweight icon is set to meet Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – where the veteran is set to carve himself out a unique piece of boxing history.

When the initial announcement of the fight came two months ago, many believed it would be an exhibition match, with claims that headguards could even be in use. However, on Monday it was confirmed that the bout had been granted full professional status.

Tyson already owns the record of being the youngest world heavyweight champion in boxing history. He achieved that feat after defeating Trevor Berbick for the WBC heavyweight crown in November 1986 at the age of just 20.

Ironically, Tyson will now become the holder of the record for the longest professional career of any world heavyweight champion. Per Boxing Social, the gap between the start of his career (vs Hector Mercedes in March 1985) and his upcoming fight with Paul will be a staggering 14,371 days – or just over 39 years.

The New York-born slugger will snatch that record from former opponent Roy Jones Junior, who he fought in an exhibition contest back in November 2020. Jones can only boast a 12,384-day career – that being the gap between his May 1989 professional debut and a loss to Anthony Pettis in April 2023. Elsewhere, Tyson and Paul will collectively claim the distinction of having boxing’s biggest age gap in a single fight. The pair will have 31 years between them on fight night – a new high for the sport.

Although Tyson is being allowed to box as a professional, certain safety measures will be in place for the bout. Firstly, the heavyweight contest will take place over a maximum of eight, two-minute rounds. In addition, the fighters will wear 14oz gloves and knockouts will be permitted. A winner will be decided on the scorecards if no knockout takes place.

Tyson’s extraordinary boxing career has seen many legendary bouts against the likes of Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, and Buster Douglas, but his fight with Paul may be among the strangest of them all.

Undeniably, Tyson holds one of the most iconic careers in boxing and is regarded as one of the most intimidating men to ever enter the ring. However, his last professional boxing match was all the way back in June 2005, when he suffered a dismal defeat to Kevin McBride – on a night where ‘The Problem Child’ would have been just eight years old!

Paul’s boxing record currently stands at 9-1, with him facing names such as Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva – all with limited professional boxing experience. His only loss came against Tommy Fury, younger brother to Tyson Fury, in February 2023.

Will 58-year-old Tyson be able to overcome the internet sensation, or will his age and inactivity play a critical role in a defeat? Only time will tell.

A man repeatedly punched by Mike Tyson in a viral video taken on a JetBlue flight is suing the former heavyweight champ — 2 years after the incident

A man who was punched repeatedly by Mike Tyson in first-class on a flight in 2022 has filed a lawsuit against the former boxing champion and airline JetBlue.

The incident occurred on a late-night flight from San Francisco to Florida on April 20, 2022 and went viral after video footage filmed by another passenger was shared by TMZ.

Tyson’s reps told the Associated Press at the time that the man seated behind Tyson was “an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat.”

In an episode of his podcast a month after the incident, Tyson said the passenger was “fucking with me,” adding that he shouldn’t fly on “public planes.”

Around the same time, the San Mateo County District Attorney said it would not file criminal charges against the former world heavyweight champion, citing “the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.”

“It is simply a case that does not belong in the criminal court. If they want to sue each other, that’s their business,” the DA said.

In December 2023, the passenger, Melvin Townsend, sent a “pre-litigation settlement demand” requesting $450,000 to resolve the incident without taking it to court, the LA Times reported.

Tyson’s lawyer told the Times there would be no “shakedown payment.”

On April 19, 2024, Townsend filed a complaint with the San Mateo County Superior Court, one day before a two-year statute of limitations came into effect for some of the claims.

Per Townsend’s account of the incident in the complaint, he and a friend noticed they were seated directly behind Tyson as they boarded the plane.

Mike Tyson is back, but what can he possibly do against an opponent more than 30 years younger?

Townsend, then 36, claims he initiated a conversation with the star, expressing admiration for Tyson’s “illustrious boxing career” and buying alcoholic drinks for him and themselves.

He describes himself as “a fan of Mr. Tyson who was happy to be speaking to one of his childhood heroes.”

Tyson offered them psilocybin mushrooms, the complaint claims, which the pair declined.

According to the court documents, the boxer then turned to his companion, a man he referred to as his manager, asking for some psilocybin mushrooms for himself. His companion declined to give him them.

“Suddenly and without warning or provocation,” Tyson stood up from his seat, turned around, and began punching Townsend repeatedly while standing over him.

“Mr. Tyson punched Plaintiff numerous times in the head, face, and neck, tore the neck of Plaintiff’s shirt, and caused Plaintiff to bleed from both sides of his head,” the complaint says.

Who's Allowing Mike Tyson to Fight Jake Paul?

The boxer’s companion tried to stop the attack by putting his body between the two men and taking some blows himself before Tyson eventually stopped, the suit says.

Townsend stated he was punched about 10 times.

Describing himself as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds, he said he had no way to defend himself “due to Mr. Tyson’s extraordinary strength and decades of professional fighting training and skill.”

The incident has left Townsend with physical and emotional distress, according to the complaint.

The lists seven complaints for damages. Three are against Tyson, claiming assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Four are against JetBlue, claiming negligence, common carrier liability, premises liability, and negligent hiring, retention, and supervision.

Townsend is requesting a trial by jury to decide the outcome.

Tyson’s representatives told Business Insider he “will be 100% refuting these ridiculous claims.”

It’s been a rocky few days between Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather. While their social media spat continues to take its course, Davis has seemingly written a bold message on how important “loyalty” is for him.

The timing of social media communication has nudged folks to believe that he is taking an indirect jibe at the former welterweight champion. The two of them were pretty tight in the formative days of ‘Tank’s’ career. He even joined Mayweather’s promotion company. However, after a few years when they drifted, it seemed like the duo were not on the best of terms. This week, it has become clear that they are anything but cordial with each other.

On Instagram stories, Tank, now Abdul Wahid, shared an image of him with a friend. Along with the image, he wrote, “Loyalty means everything!”

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SHUTS DOWN GERVONTA DAVIS LEAVING MAYWEATHER PROMOTIONS QUESTION!

What is the significance of this post you may ask? Well, Tank and ‘Pretty Boy’ used to be close until last year, him when the legend helped crack a great deal for his fight against Ryan Garcia. However, now that Shakur Stevenson is batting hard to fight Davis, Mayweather seems to have shifted the team.

While Tank took digs at him for supposedly being stranded in Dubai for money issues, Mayweather shared a video on his Instagram stories. In it, Shakur Stevenson makes direct remarks toward Tank. He noted, “It’s a fighter out here that’s been calling your name, that wants to fight you. Gervonta “Tank” Davis, let’s make the fight happen. I’m tired of tweeting, I’m tired of talking about it. Stop ducking me and let’s make the fight happen.”

Earlier, speculations started about Mayweather being held by Dubai authorities for not paying up his debt. A fan on X nudged Tank to comment on such rumours. Confirming the same, he wrote, “He gotta pay them people that money back..if I’m lying tell him to go live rn.” He backed his stance by writing in another post, “He been stuck over there for a min too..”

Gervonta Davis: Floyd Mayweather Keeps Me Humble

While these could just be conjecture that Tank was spewing, IBHOF elector Rick Glasser confirmed the claims. On X, he remarked, “Just got off the phone with my guy in Dubai, he told me that #Floyd #Mayweather is definitely being held by the Government court system there as he owes a substantial amount of money in Dubai…Was told the debt is #unassociated with #Boxing. Floyd’s desperately trying to work things out, to no avail so far. So @Gervontaa #TankDavis is correct that Floyd’s being held there!!!”

Mexican heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jr. has expressed his desire to have a third bout against British boxer Anthony Joshua.

“He gave me an opportunity, I gave him an opportunity, and we have another one. I think it’s great. He’s doing what he has to do. I welcome him. I’m not here to speak badly about any fighter. I think Joshua is doing his job, but now it’s my turn. Now I’m back at 100%,” stated Ruiz.

Recall that in the Ruiz-Joshua rivalry, the score stands at 1-1 in terms of victories. In 2019, Ruiz scored a highly unexpected technical knockout victory over then WBA, WBO, and IBF world champion Anthony Joshua.

The blockbuster clash between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson is set to break a 61-year boxing record.

Paul will welcome Tyson back to the ring when they meet on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The heavyweight contest will be a sanctioned, professional fight by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) in a major U-turn.

The former world heavyweight champion hasn’t had a pro bout since June 2005 when he suffered a crushing defeat to Ireland’s Kevin McBribe.

And by the time Tyson faces Paul, he will be 58 while ‘The Problem Child’ will be 27.

That 31-year age gap will be the biggest in the history of professional boxing, surpassing the 24-year age gap between Archie Moore, 49, and Mike DiBiase, 25, when they fought in 1963, according to ESPN.

‘Iron’ Mike was 38 when he last competed in a pro fight, but he will once again lace up the gloves in the summer.

Mike Tyson showed just how powerful he was, scoring an eight-second KO as an amateur.

Heavyweight legend ‘Iron Mike’ has had a stellar career in boxing, having achieved it all at professional level, retiring in 2005 after reigning as undisputed world champion from 1987 to 1990.

But his credentials were certainly proven at amateur level, where he won a gold medal at the 1981 Junior Olympics in the heavyweight division.

And in the final, the heavy-handed American made a statement like no other with the landmark event lasting just eight seconds against rival Joe Cortez.

Tyson quickly burst out from his corner with just one intention, and began loading up some vicious shots.

But after just eight seconds with Cortez clearly way out of his depth, the 15-year-old at the time landed a crushing right-left combination which sent his opponent crumpling to the canvas.

Mike Tyson is back, but what can he possibly do against an opponent more than 30 years younger?

Cortez was left flat on his back out cold, and the referee immediately waved off the fight while seeking medical attention for the silver medallist.

Tyson’s quickfire KO came as no surprise, with the amateur champion seen as one of the most dynamic punchers to have come through at the time.

He went on to win another gold medal at the 1982 version of the tournament, before making the step to the professional ranks with a huge reputation.

A glittering career went just as quickly from strength to strength, seeing him rise to become the youngest ever heavyweight world champion aged 20, when he beat Trevor Berbick with another thumping KO in November 1986.

Claressa Shields knows she’ll always have detractors being in the combat sports public eye, but she’s learned the fan bases are much different between boxing and MMA.

Shields, the undisputed light middleweight boxing champion, recently improved her pro MMA record to 2-1 with a hard-fought split decision win over Kelsey DeSantis at PFL vs. Bellator in Saudi Arabia. “T-Rex” has seen how the MMA community has cast some doubt on her future in the sport, so picking up the win on a big stage was satisfying — mostly because of her doubters.

“If I was just a regular old Joe and not athletic, and not really a true fighter and a true combat fighter, then MMA wouldn’t even exist for me,” Shields said on The MMA Hour. “But it’s the fact that I am just really a dog and I love fighting. I love the art of war and I’m willing to put in a hard work. That’s how I won the fight. I put in so much hard work for this girl. She’s a purple belt in jiu-jitsu.

“It’s just like, for her to be a purple belt and me be a white belt, and then she’s also more experienced in MMA, she had three fights compared to my two and I’m 1-1, but she also had Muai Thai fights and have Brazilian jiu-jitsu [matches] and I don’t have those things — so I knew that going in there with her was a risk, but we worked on my weaknesses.

“But winning in MMA, it’s fulfilling, and then it’s funny to me because I feel like in MMA, I have more doubters than I have in boxing. Nobody in boxing doubts me. It’s a couple of haters here and there, but [are] you seriously going to tell me that there’s a girl right now in boxing that can beat me? Nobody can stand on that. But when you say [there are] girls in MMA who, even on a lower level, can beat me, people get all excited, like, ‘Yeah, somebody can finally beat her.’ And then when I win, it just makes all of them mad. So it’s very satisfying to me when they’re punching the air and pulling their hair when I win, because it’s just like, yes, I worked hard, I won.

Why aren’t they knocking me out, why aren’t they choking me out?’ The answer I got was because I have potential to be an MMA champion.”

Floyd Mayweather will be hoping he has found his Gervonta Davis replacement.

Mayweather Promotion’s up-and-coming lightweight Jursly Carlos Vargas has been drawing comparisons to Davis for his explosive all-action fight style and has got off to a flying start in his pro career.

The Curacao native turned over in November 2022, knocking out Yanko Naydenov inside the opening stanza in Amsterdam, Holland.

His devastating performance caught the eye of Mayweather, who snapped him up shortly after.

“Two weeks after that, I was signed and two weeks after that I moved to Las Vegas [to the Mayweather Gym].”

Vargas followed up his knockout win over Naydenov with another first-round demolition job of Darrick Gates last month to move his pro record to 2-0.

He is expected to remain active now that he has adjusted to the training and altitude of his new surroundings.

Vargas has a long way to go before he reaches Davis’ level but at 19 years old he has plenty of time to develop.

Like Vargas, Davis signed with Mayweather Promotions early in his career, however, the pair have had a rocky relationship since ‘Tank’ first became a world champion in 2017.

In 2013, Floyd Mayweather at 36, decided to fight a young and rising 23-year-old, Canelo Alvarez. The match took place in Las Vegas. The fight gave Canelo not only his pro career’s first loss but also his most devastating to date. While he was majorly seen as an underdog for that matchup, a huge chunk of his fan base remained confident that he would dominate ‘Money’. However, on fight night, through a majority decision, he lost his WBC and Ring magazine super welterweight titles to Mayweather. Years later, when he’s way past that loss, career-wise, he reflects on what the matchup actually meant for him at the time.

Canelo’s fight against Mayweather was noteworthy. While he stood his ground persistently till the end, his punches couldn’t effectively find their mark on an elusive and experienced fighter like Floyd Mayweather who counter-punched his way to victory.

Alvarez jotted down a few points from that matchup as he spoke on a special series PBC is doing ahead of his Jaime Munguia clash. “When I fought Mayweather, he already had a lot of fights in that scenario. He had a lot of experience as well. I felt like I could beat him at that moment. I wasn’t ready for a fight of that magnitude and in that spotlight. I learned many things,” Canelo admitted.

I think I learned a lot from the experience. Obviously, it hurt my pride a lot because I wanted to beat the best.” After that fateful night, Canelo was never the same again. He was pretty much unstoppable until a few years ago.

‘AJ’ had previously named Wilder as a potential opponent for his September return…

It looks ever more likely that former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will face either Zhilei Zhang or the winner of Daniel Dubois vs Fillip Hrgovic in his homecoming fight at Wembley Stadium in September. The Watford-born fighter had included former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on a four-man shortlist of potential opponents, but it seems that a clash with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is off the table for now.

Why Joshua Won’t Fight Wilder in September

Boxing fans have been anticipating the fight for years

Joshua named Wilder, alongside Zhang, Hrgovic and Dubois as the names who were in line to share the ring with him later this year. However, even if Wilder defeats Zhang in their fight on the 1st of June, he won’t be facing the Brit.

Turki Alalshikh – the mastermind behind Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in boxing – is close with Joshua – and has previously told the Londoner that he wants to see him fight the best available opposition for the remaining fights of his career. For as invested as he is in Joshua’s goals, though, Alalshikh has his own ambitions in the sport.

With that in mind, the Saudi chief is hoping Wilder will be able to fight Jared Anderson on his Riyadh Season card on the 3rd of August in Los Angeles, assuming he comes through his bout with Zhang unscathed. Alalshikh wrote on social media:

Eddie Hearn says Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua fight is off and it would be a 'mismatch' | talkSPORT

Joshua’s main ambition remains becoming a three-time world champion and – in an ideal world – he would fight the winner of the Oleksander Usyk vs Tyson Fury unification fight in just under three weeks. Unfortunately for the 34-year-old, the bout has an immediate rematch clause, meaning the winner isn’t likely to be available for a title defence until early 2025.

Unbeaten in his last four fights, Joshua is on a roll under his new trainer Ben Davidson and is looking like the fighter who first rose to stardom in the heavyweight division. His most recent win against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou was destructive and is much more credible than it looks on paper, seeing as the Cameroonian took the ‘Gypsy King’ the full distance and even managed to score a knockdown in their fight.
