A FRESH spanner has been thrown into the works of a grudge match between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

The pair’s long-overdue showdown was on the brink of coming to fruition last December before Wilder suffered a shock loss to Joseph Parker.

AJ, however, refused to close the door on a dust-up with the American and revealed earlier this month that he could potentially fight him at Wembley.

But Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh seemingly has different plans for Wilder, who returns to the ring on June 1 for a do-or-die showdown with Zhilei Zhang.

Alalshikh plans to have Wilder take part in a domestic dust-up against the undefeated Jared Anderson should he come through his Riyad rumble with Zhang.

Alongside a picture of himself and Anderson, Alalshikh tweeted: “The talented Jared Anderson is with us now on [the] August 3rd Riyadh Season card at LA, against the ‘Bronze Bomber’ Deontay Wilder.

“If he’s ready by then to fight after 1st of June’s fight against Zhilei Zhang.”

Joshua, 34, hasn’t set foot inside the ring since his brutal two-round demolition of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in March.

But he recently claimed he’s on course to fight either Wilder, Zhang, Filip Hrgovic or Daniel Dubois this September.

The Watford warrior added: “On June 1 in Saudi Arabia they’ve got the 5 vs 5 card.

“You’ve got Filip Hrgovic vs Daniel Dubois, and you’ve got Zhilei Zhang vs Deontay Wilder.

“So providing one of those looks good – the one who looks the best, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh said to me, ‘I want you to fight [him].’

Ahead of the bout, Tyson spoke to tennis star Nick Kyrgios on the Good Trouble podcast on Thursday (2 May), reflecting on his past hypnosis.

“I’m an exponent of hypnosis,” said the American. “I was raised off of hypnosis since I was 13, 14, until the end of my career. I always had hypnosis before I fought.

“It only works with… Only certain people get it, not everybody gets it. I guess that’s what life is all about; not everybody’s the same. But I got it.

“It’s all about reaching your self-conscious[ness]. You have a connection with your self-conscious, your ferociousness. Everything’s about being connected, and by using that for fighting, too…

Despite what people thought, Ryan Garcia both literally and figuratively defied the odds to put Devin Haney on the ground. However, does this massive win over his career rival qualify him to face perhaps the biggest challenge of his professional career? Well, after his win over Haney, he called out Gervonta Davis for a rematch under one condition. Responding to a possible second fight between the two, Canelo Álvarez had his say.

Despite winning the early rounds, Gervonta Davis finished Garcia via body shot in the seventh round of their fight in April last year. The Victorville native even had to take a knee to prevent further damage. However, with his performance against Haney, Garcia proved a fight with Davis at a higher weight limit and, without a rehydration clause, would look different. Canelo Alvarez shared his thoughts on the rematch and even picked his favorite when asked about it in an interview with iFL TV recently.

After his grand arrival at MGM Grand Resort & Casino in Las Vegas ahead of the Cinco de Mayo weekend fight against Jaime Munguia, a bunch of reporters surrounded the Mexican superstar for answers to a variety of questions. However, one stood out from the others. Having praised Garcia’s win over Haney, Alvarez turned to the future.

As he was trying to move away from the crowd of reporters, one reporter threw in the Gervonta-Davis rematch question. He quickly turned around and said, “It will be good!.” Moreover, he thinks Garcia will win this time around. Alvarez added, If Garcia and Davis were to step back into the ring, I have full confidence that Garcia could come out on top.”

Gervonta Davis defeats Ryan Garcia by knockout to remain unbeaten - Los Angeles Times

Last year in April Gervonta Davis dropped Garcia twice with the second knockdown coming in the form of a body shot that ended the bout in round seven. This marked Garcia’s first career defeat, which he is eager to avenge. Notably, for that fight, Garcia had agreed to compete at a catchweight of 136lbs and also signed off on a 10lbs rehydration clause which he later said left him drained.

After his stunning win over Haney, Garcia issued a challenge to “Tank” under one condition. Garcia tweeted, “Everyone wanna talk about the little Stupid tank,” Let’s fight, [enough] of that funny talk. Come see me at 144[lbs] and [let’s] stop the talk.” It seems Garcia is clear about the fighting stipulation this time.

Regardless, while appearing in the PBD podcast with Patrick Bet David recently, Garcia revealed it’s unlikely the fight would happen, even though he desperately wants it. Garcia claimed Davis didn’t want it. Garcia insists he will never fight at super-lightweight again and Davis has never fought above super-lightweight.

If the fight doesn’t happen, Garcia won’t be short of options in front of him, including Isaac CruzJaron Ennis, and more. However, one other fighter has expressed interest in facing Garcia.

Floyd Mayweather went the entirety of his professional career undefeated in boxing, preserving his status as one of the best boxers of all-time and certainly of his generation.

But fans believe that if he had faced Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis at his prime, it could have offered a potential slip-up for the American.

Mayweather, 47, hung his boxing gloves in 2017 after improving his boxing record to going to 50 fights unbeaten against Conor McGregor. However, he managed to beat the likes of Jose Luis Castillo and Victoriano Sosa during the short spell when he was eligible for the lightweight division.

The two fighters have represented two extremes of boxing in recent years, with Mayweather renowned for his slick, fan-friendly style and Davis a hard-hitting knockout fan. A question posed by talkSPORT’s Michael Benson pondered what it would be like to see Mayweather and Davis face each other at lightweight.

“How would a fantasy Floyd Mayweather vs Gervonta Davis fight at lightweight (135lbs) play out in your opinion?” He asked on X.com (formerly Twitter).

It is fair to say the reaction was somewhat polarized amongst boxing aficionados, with some banking on a ‘Money’ whitewash, while others predicted he would struggle to survive. One fan said the Michigan would “win all 12 rounds”, pointing to his record of 15 titles in four different weight divisions. Another predicted ‘Tank’ would struggle to last the duration of the fight, writing: “Floyd at 135 and 140 was a total menace. Tank wouldn’t make it past the 7th round.”

Fresh concerns have been raised about the upcoming professional fight between YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The bout, sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations will take place on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas — but one promoter believes Iron Mike will be in danger once he steps into the ring.

It is no secret that a significant age gap exists between 57-year-old Tyson and 27-year-old Paul — the largest such gap in the history of organized professional boxing. Tyson last competed professionally in 2005, and the sport has changed immensely since then — prompting talk that he might not know just what he’s in for this summer.

Tyson will have celebrated his 58th birthday by the time his fight with Paul rolls around, and promoter Ben Shalom thinks that the fight will “make a mockery of the sport” if it proceeds as planned.

Former world champion boxer Timothy Bradley predicts Mike Tyson will knock out Jake Paul in upcoming bout | Fox News

“Having a 58-year-old in a professional boxing fight is clearly not professional and that’s where the line has to be drawn for these fights,” he told talkSPORT. “It’s ok for entertainment but for me, it’s a major step too far (to make the bout professiona), it is a circus act, you couldn’t get anything more ridiculous.”

Shalom is far from the only concerned observer. Tyson is said to be at risk for a brain bleed if Paul connects with his head. Tyson could also develop heart conditions as a byproduct of a drastic change to his training regimen, and these would create serious health problems for “The Baddest Man on the Planet.”

Beyond the health concerns, some believe that fighting Paul is a stain on Tyson’s legendary career and his reputation in the ring — especially after a 19-year pause in between fights.

“I feel like it is just dangerous, and the idea of a YouTube boxer beating Mike Tyson is not a nice feeling for me,” British boxer Richard Riakporhe told talkSPORT. “He could have that on his record and it is not nice as a boxing fan because we see Mike Tyson as a legend.”

The boxing world has been shocked after the revelation that Ryan García tested positive for PED before his fight against Devin Haney, with the Mexican-American boxer reacting in a rather strange way, posting a video and ranting on his social media accounts.

García says they are ‘persecuting him’ and thinks it’s all part of a conspiracy against him, with fellow boxers like Gervonta Davis being by his side after the news of his failed drug test came, posting on social media on a now-deleted tweet that ‘they’re doing what they can to take away García’s victory.’

Now, in another deleted tweet, Gervonta Davis posted a screenshot of his DM’s in which he is texting Ryan García, in which both are discussing the PED scandal, and both say the following.

What was initially celebrated as a landmark victory now faces intense scrutiny and doubt.

Tyson Fury has “never seen footwork” like that of Oleksandr Usyk, according to Tony Bellew. He says Fury will be left “chasing a ghost” when they fight for all the marbles, live on TNT Sports Box Office on May 18.

Oleksandr Usyk has been backed to win his undisputed heavyweight championship showdown with Tyson Fury by former opponent Tony Bellew.
After protracted negotiations and a postponement, boxing’s glamour division will finally get its showpiece event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May 18, live on TNT Sports Box Office.
When is the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk fight? Date, fight time, live stream & where to watch on TV | Goal.com Nigeria
Fury will put up his WBC crown, while at risk for Usyk are his unified WBA, WBO, IBF and Ring Magazine belts – gained having twice beaten another British superstar in Anthony Joshua.
If the Ukrainian wins, he’ll be the third man to clean up in two weight classes, following in the footsteps of Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford, both of whom achieved the feat last year.
Usyk’s previous sweep of a division came at cruiserweight, with his final fight at 200 pounds coming against Bellew in 2018.
Though Fury is the more experienced man at heavyweight, with the height and reach advantage that comes with his natural size, Usyk has technique like no other – a factor Bellew believes will ultimately prove key.
He told fellow former fighter Carl Froch, via the Froch on Fighting podcast: “Oleksandr Usyk, points – 100%. I thought AJ would beat him first time around, so it’s got nothing to do with [me being a previous opponent].
“What’s the style [Fury] struggles with most? A back-foot fighter. [Usyk] wants you to attack him. He makes an absolute fool of you. He will leave Fury no option but to attack him, because he’ll build up an early lead and Fury will be chasing a ghost.
“Fury is not going to be running after Usyk like a madman because that would be playing into his hands, but there are times he will have to press and that’s where he’ll fall short.
Boxing: Report: Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to fight in February 2023 | Marca
“Usyk’s feet are exceptional. I’ve never seen feet like his ever before. Usyk has seen people like Fury before – he’s come up against the likes of Joe Joyce, he’s fought big, big heavyweights. He’s fought Anthony Joshua – the second-biggest punching heavyweight in the world. He’s been in there with big guys – it doesn’t phase him.
“His judgement of distance…his front foot is so close to you all the time, and you think he’s in range but he’s actually not. I can’t put into words how good he is – the best I faced, by a mile. Fury will never have seen footwork like this.
“Once Usyk’s had a good look and set his traps and figured you out completely…he’s an absolutely formidable, fantastic fighter.”
Joshua has also given his backing to Usyk in the fight against Fury, saying he is a “phenomenal” boxer.
