Ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou was knocked out by Anthony Joshua during their non-title heavyweight boxing contest in Saudi Arabia last Friday.

Francis Ngannou will drop out of the WBC’s top 10 heavyweight rankings after his devastating defeat to Anthony Joshua last Friday. Ngannou, 37, was brutally knocked out by Joshua, 34, in the second round of their fight in Saudi Arabia.

Much was expected of Ngannou heading into the bout after his impressive debut performance against Tyson Fury last October. Although Fury won that fight via split decision, many fans believed Ngannou should’ve been handed the victory for flooring the WBC champion and holding his own. The WBC responded by handing Ngannou, a former UFC champion, a spot in their top 10 heavyweight rankings.

Yet that honour has now been retracted after Joshua’s emphatic victory. AJ, a former two-time world champion, twice floored Ngannou before dropping him for a third and final time. Joshua has now won four fights on the bounce and is back in contention for a world title shot.

But Ngannou’s dream of becoming a world champion in both UFC and boxing has been put on hold. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed that Ngannou will drop out their top 10 heavyweight rankings. “Yeah, (he will drop) from the top 10 certainly because he was knocked out in two rounds,” Sulaiman told talkSPORT.

Sulaiman insists he does “not regret ranking” Ngannou and has praised his “sensational outing” against Fury. Sulaiman added: “Joshua looked phenomenal, Ngannou looked surprised. He got caught early and could not recover from the next knockdown.

“But to use an analogy, in 1971, Joe Frazier knocked down Ali and beat him for the first time. In the next fight, George Foreman knocks Frazier down seven times and knocks him out in two rounds. Does that erase Joe Frazier’s performance against Ali?”

Sulaiman refused to confirm whether Ngannou will remain in the top 40 heavyweight rankings – insisting it is “a matter for the ratings committee” – but would like to see him stay in the mix. The WBC chief continued: “If it was my decision, I would support him to still be in the top 40 rankings.

“I think we all could see him fighting anyone and still be competitive and possibly winning against rated fighters. So we’ll see what the ratings committee decides in the next couple of days.”

Joshua also believes Ngannou is capable of being competitive in boxing. The Brit said in his post-fight press conference: “He can come again. I told him he shouldn’t leave boxing. He can do well. Remember he’s two fights in and he’s fought the best. He can go a long way if he stays dedicated but it’s up to him.”

UPDATE ;Francis Ngannou next fight after Anthony Joshua has already been announced

And Ngannou has pledged to make a comeback and gain his maiden professional win in boxing. He said after his defeat to Joshua: “You can be sure I’m not done here. It wasn’t my day. He was way better than me. It sucks but it’s the game. We all know that.”

Journeyman Paul Butlin fought several big-name heavyweights during his career but claims only one man knocked him out cold.

The 41-year-old went the distance with Derek Chisora twice before testing himself against Lucas Browne when he was a heavyweight star on the rise in 2012.

Anthony Joshua is the biggest name on Butlin’s record. They squared off in AJ’s second professional fight, well before he became a two-time world champion and a boxing superstar.

Butlin was stopped in two rounds, but avoided the same fate Francis Ngannou suffered against Olympic gold medallist Joshua at ‘Knockout Chaos’ in his most recent fight.

In fact, Butlin avoided suffering a true knockout until his very final fight when he squared off against Kash Ali, the man whom Joe Joyce hopes to beat to get his career back on track.

“I’ve already fought Kash Ali, and I got sparked in the last 10 seconds,” Butlin said on TikTok in response to a fan telling him to end his boxing retirement for a fight with 6ft 6in heavyweight.

“It was my last fight…I was fat as f***. I was a big, fat slammer. I wasn’t really training. I just took the fight thinking I could do it as usual.

“I was winning the fight on aggression – you can watch it yourself on YouTube. I was a fat slob, that’s the only thing. I can’t watch it because I look a mess.

“I think it was the last eight seconds, 10 seconds, he bowls a right hand over the top. Broke his hand, but he knocked me out. I was never knocked out in 41 fights before he sparked me.”

Butlin, who has become a bailiff since walking away from boxing, says he immediately knew his time in the sport was up after facing Ali in June 2016.

He added: “I got up and my mate who I was with, I just said ‘This is it. I’m done. I can’t do it, it’s too dangerous.’

“I was 40 years old. It was my 41st fight, and I just thought, ‘Do you know what? F*** this. I’ve got to get out with my marbles or God knows where it’s going to end up.’

“And that was my last fight.”

Joyce will hope to avoid suffering the same fate as Butlin as he looks to get his career back on track following back-to-back stoppage losses against Zheili Zhang.

Francis Ngannou didn’t feel quite right in the moments leading up to his fight against Anthony Joshua, though he makes no excuses for his loss.

In just his second professional boxing match, the former UFC heavyweight champion found not even a fraction of the success he did in losing a razor-close decision to Tyson Fury. Instead, he suffered a knockdown in the first round and then got planted on the canvas in similar fashion in the second.

The end came just after Ngannou got back to his feet. Joshua blasted him with a huge overhand right that shut the lights out in dramatic fashion. Ngannou knew getting knocked out by Joshua was a real possibility, but even he didn’t expect it to go down like that.

“We all knew it could happen,” Ngannou said during an Instagram Live session on Wednesday. “I wasn’t seeing it happen like that, but I always knew it could happen. At least, I was always prepared for that.”

Before he walked to the ring that night, Ngannou said something didn’t feel quite right as he warmed up backstage. He’s sure it’s a feeling some of his past opponents have probably felt going against him, which is why he’s not diminishing Joshua’s performance.

“I remember being in the locker [room] trying to warm up, and bro, it wasn’t going,” Ngannou said. “I was falling asleep. I’m sweating, but I’m falling asleep.

“But I assume that’s how some people I have fought, some people that I beat have felt before, but it was basically my first time to feel that. That’s why I kind of took a couple days out, I took some time for me. I obviously had to reflect on everything that’s happened through the fight.”

Ngannou didn’t address the timing of the fight, but the card from Saudi Arabia went on for several hours, and the main event didn’t take place until after 3 a.m. local time.

Perhaps that played some part in how Ngannou felt as he warmed up, but he didn’t want to take away from Joshua’s victory. He also refused to put any of the blame on his coaches or teammates, because ultimately he knows everybody did their job that night … except him.

“Heads up to Anthony Joshua, to his team, that executed their plan properly,” Ngannou said. “Hats off to my team, too, because they did a great job. I think I was the one that just didn’t execute the plan properly and maybe didn’t feel completely present. I was the only one that didn’t show up, let’s say that.

“Everybody showed up and did what should have been done. No blame to anybody. All the blame is just about me. That’s the game.”

In the aftermath of the fight, Ngannou said he didn’t have any lingering effects from the knockout, though he’s seen doctors and already has an appointment scheduled with a neurologist. That said, he isn’t rushing to compete again, but it’s not necessarily over concerns about his health.

Instead, Ngannou said he wants to decompress after a very busy few months. He fought Fury for 10 rounds this past October and then effectively shifted gears to get ready for Joshua in March.

“I was conscious right after [the knockout], and since then everything’s been good,” Ngannou explained. “Still going to run some medical work, just in case.

“Right now, I don’t know exactly what the fight I will be looking for next. I know that I’m going to take some time to rest up, focus on myself, and then when I’m ready I will get back to training. Therefore we can start to discuss the fights. As for now, we will just live the life. Because always remember, it doesn’t matter what is your profession, there’s always a life, we have a life going on that will continue to go.”

Final Punch Stats Released For Anthony Joshua's Win vs Francis Ngannou

Despite the setback this past weekend, Ngannou insists he’s not done with boxing, and he definitely plans on living up to his commitment to compete in the PFL. But he can’t say for certain what’s next. He knows there are plenty of challenges to conquer across both sports.

“I’m not done with boxing, I’m not done with MMA,” Ngannou said. “Basically right now, I have an opponent now in the PFL in Renan Ferreira. That will be my future opponent in the PFL, but again, I basically have a lot of fights in the future. I can still combine [sports], I will still be back in action. Not because I’m more comfortable in MMA that I will let boxing go. I’m still going to do both.

“It’s part of what we do. We take challenges. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t work. But we are working on it.”

With Ferreira waiting in the PFL, Ngannou is still open to any potential opponents in boxing, which includes a potential showdown with fellow knockout artist Deontay Wilder. He’s not making any decisions yet, but he plans on staying busy once he’s ready to fight again.

“It’s not over yet – not at all,” Ngannou said. “We’re just getting started. The only thing that we will miss this year is time, and I think we have some good amount of time ahead of us. Going to take some time for myself, chill, spend time with my family, my friends and then come back ready.”

According to co-manager Shelly Finkel, Deontay Wilder is still hopeful about seeing his longtime foe Anthony Joshua in combat.

Joshua’s two-round exhibition bout against Francis Ngannou went viral as he crushed him.

Over the course of the next 12 months, the former two-time heavyweight world champion from Britain may be available for a bout.

Ever since he started his career as a heavyweight, Tyson Fury has always had detractors who underestimate him for one reason or the other. And every single time, he comes out on top to prove why he is one of the best in boxing history. To former champ Carl Froch, watching Anthony Joshua easily get rid of Francis Ngannou in just two rounds proves Tyson Fury is on the decline. He even thinks that the upcoming fight against Oleksandr Usyk is not going to happen, he believes it will get scrapped. And if it does happen, Tyson Fury will be handed his first professional defeat. Because Froch is convinced that Fury lost his fight against Francis Ngannou.

Speaking at the Boxing Writers Club Froch said: “Fury must have just been having a really bad night – or, like I think, Fury’s past his best. He’s seen better days. I study the sport and I study the fights, and Tyson Fury used to throw 30-plus feints a round. Feint, feint. Draw his opponent in, feint. Double jab, right hand. He’s not doing the feints anymore. He’s doing four or five feints. He’s slow on his feet. He’s been knocked down five times [in recent years]. When you’re hitting the floor and getting hit on the chin and not throwing feints and not as busy as you used to be, that means you’re past your best and you’re on the decline and you’re on the slide.”

Fury v Joshua: Tyson Fury claims to have 'sent contract' to Anthony Joshua over September fight - BBC Sport

Does this mean Fury vs Joshua doesn’t happen?

In order to make the most anticipated fight happen between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, first we need to see the ‘Gypsy King’ beat Oleksandr Usyk. They have a two-fight deal, no matter who wins the first fight on May 18. Anthony Joshua gets to fight whoever comes out on top from these two affairs. This is the perfect opportunity for Tyson Fury to silence critics once more. At least he is getting as ready as he will ever be, judging by the looks of his physique where he appears to be slimmed down and slightly ripped. Do you agree with Froch or is Tyson Fury going to silence one more critic on May 18?

“I just knew that AJ’s experience and his power would be too much”; Dillian Whyte was not surprised that Anthony Joshua knocked out MMA star in second round in Saudi Arabia; British contender returns against Christian Hammer in Ireland on Sunday

Dillian Whyte says Francis Ngannou’s “false confidence” was punished by Anthony Joshua and he fully expected the MMA star to be brutally beaten.

Joshua ruthlessly overpowered Ngannou on Friday night, flooring the former UFC heavyweight champion twice before a huge right hand ended the fight in the second round in Saudi Arabia.

“Francis is not experienced enough to beat the top guys. He got a bit complacent because he did well against Fury but Fury didn’t take him seriously,” Whyte told Sky Sports.

“Fury just thought he was going to outbox him and he gave Fury some problems but that was his undoing.

“I think that fight gave him false confidence to the point where, when he was getting hammered with big punches, he stayed in the pocket and he wasn’t trying to move his head or hold or anything.

“So, I knew it was going to happen and I picked AJ to win anyway.

Dillian Whyte Predicts Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou

“AJ is a puncher and you don’t just stand up in front of someone like AJ with your hands basically down and then switching stances mid-fight against a right-handed puncher. Why did he go southpaw? It didn’t make any sense.

“I just knew that AJ’s experience and his power would be too much. I thought Francis would be a little bit better, to be honest, but Francis… he’s doing boxing, but it’s not recognised boxing training so he hasn’t covered the basics.

“Someone like AJ, an experienced gold medallist, all these world title fights, he covers the basics on a daily basis and that is where Francis came unstuck.”

Whyte, who was originally linked with an Ngannou fight before Fury and Joshua, believes he would have inflicted a similar result.

“I tried to fight Ngannou four years ago,” he said. “I would have definitely knocked him out. I said I would fight him in boxing and MMA.

“I always believed I could knock him out because the boxing ability isn’t there.

“I think he is a good fighter but I don’t think he is a good boxer.

“I believe I would have been able to find a hole, hit him with body shots, and catch him with right hands.”

WBC champion Fury was watching from ringside ahead of a potential future fight with Joshua following his upcoming undisputed world title fight against Oleksandr Usyk on May 18.

“I think Tyson is always worried about punchers, or anyone that can knock him out, but the thing is, Tyson is nowhere near as raw as Ngannou is,” said Whyte.

“As a professional world level boxer, it is kind of hard to take away anything from the fight because AJ has knocked out a massive puncher and a big guy but when you look at it strategically, from a boxing standpoint, there is nothing in it.

“You are talking about a world champion fighting someone at ‘Southern Area’ level. If that’s ‘Southern Area’ level? Because some of the heavyweights at ‘Southern Area’ would beat him.”

Whyte will return to the ring against Christian Hammer on Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, in Castlebar in the west of Ireland.

The former WBC interim champion has been cleared to continue his career after an investigation confirmed that a positive drug test was caused by a contaminated supplement before a rematch with Joshua was cancelled last August.

“I am very excited, it is very good to be back and I’ll be looking at opportunities in the future,” Whyte told Sky Sports.

“I have been meaning to return to Ireland for a while, I have got family from here and they can come down to the fight.

“Christian Hammer, he is a guy I know, tough guy. Experienced in a lot of fights. It’s a very good fight, considering I have been off for 16 months. Very good fight to come back to.

“I still want the world title and I still want to fight all the big fights. There is a lot of big fights going on and I want my name to get back amongst the mix and to prove I can still beat these guys.”

World Boxing Council President, Mauricio Sulaiman, has said the organisation would “accept” Anthony Joshua going on to face the winner of the fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship.

Fury and Usyk go head-to-head on May 18 in Saudi Arabia for all the belts.

The two boxers are expected to fight again in a rematch expected to take place later in the year.

Diaz has been relatively quiet since losing against Paul last year.

However, he has been flirting with a return to the UFC where he spent 15 years before walking away from the promotion following a submission win over Tony Ferguson in September 2022.

Diaz has called for a trilogy fight with Conor McGregor at the Sphere in Las Vegas, but he’s also in talks for a rematch with Jorge Masvidal, who beat him at UFC 244 in November 2019.

However, the heavyweight titans have agreed to a rematch after their inaugural encounter on May 18 meaning AJ may have to wait until next year for his opportunity.

Joshua is ranked No.3 with the major sanctioning body while Hrgovic is placed two spots ahead of him at No.1.

A fight with either Zhilei Zhang or Joseph Parker is unlikely to be made next as Zhang is due a rematch after losing to the Kiwi on Friday night.
