Deontay Wilder has expressed his excitement at the prospect of fighting Anthony Joshua in London. The former WBC world champion was set to face Joshua in Saudi Arabia in March, but a disappointing performance in a shock defeat to Joseph Parker in December derailed those plans.

Wilder’s career appeared to have reached a dead end after the unanimous decision defeat to the New Zealander, but the 38-year-old is back with renewed vigor and is optimistic about his chances of facing Joshua if he can impressively defeat Zhilei Zhang on the Matchroom vs Queensberry card in Riyadh on June 1.

While a fight between Joshua and Wilder has been discussed for years, it has yet to happen due to promotional issues. However, Wilder is confident that an impressive victory over Zhang next month will finally lead to a showdown with the Englishman. “Yeah, it turns me on,” Wilder told Sportsbook Review when discussing the possibility of fighting Joshua in London.

Anthony Joshua explains why he thinks Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury have agreed to fight one another | talkSPORT

“I have no problem coming to London. It would be amazing for me. I actually have major fans in the UK, and I think they’re going to show up and represent me, even though I’m fighting their countryman. All these fights are beautiful to talk about, but I’ve got to handle business come June 1. But it has been a long time coming for that fight with AJ.”

“It’s easy for them to talk about it right now because I already have a task I need to accomplish, but we’ll see what type of talk they have when I accomplish my task, then there will be no more hiding, no will be able to hide, no one will be able to be outspoken without any weight behind it. When I do what I’ve got to do, then you’ve got to be a man of your word and do what you said you’re going to do.”, reports the Express.

Joshua is riding a four-fight winning streak, capped with a sensational knockout victory over MMA star Francis Ngannou in March. Wilder has been impressed by the Englishman’s return to form, but he insists he has no fear of stepping into the ring with the former two-time unified heavyweight king.

“I want it. I’ve never ran from a fight, I never shied away from the fight, no matter what you’ve heard over the years,” he said. “I’ve never run from anyone, I’ve never dodged anyone, I’ve taken the short end of the sticks just to make fights happen, that’s the god’s honest truth. I’m here, and when I’ve done what I’m supposed to, let’s get this fight on. I want the biggest fights possible that can be made, but it all relies on June 1.”

Wilder also has his heart set on a fourth fight with Tyson Fury. The pair first met in 2018 with the bout ending in a draw before Fury won the rematch and the trilogy fight by stoppage in 2020 and 2021 respectively.”

“I want to make Tyson Fury pay so bad, so bad. I don’t think that chapter is over with. I could see a fourth fight. I could see a fourth in the making, created by the creators. The Saudis have the source and the power to make it all happen. I want to get it back so bad.”

Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder had been planning to step into the ring together since 2017. Since then, they have been diligently trying to negotiate a fight agreement and only managed to do so in March of this year.

However, before this, Wilder was defeated by Joseph Parker, and instead of facing him, AJ fought Francis Ngannou. It’s worth recalling that the Briton secured a stunning victory with a devastating knockout.

Meanwhile, the American is set to return to the ring in a bout against Chilean Zhang on June 1st in Riyadh as part of the Queensberry-Matchroom 5 on 5 tournament. The main event of this tournament will be the clash between Filip Hrgovic and Daniel Dubois.

Recall that earlier, Deontay Wilder was the WBC heavyweight world champion, defeating Canadian Bermane Stiverne in 2015. Five years later, the championship belt was taken from him by the current champion Tyson Fury, who will be fighting for the title of undisputed champion against Alexander Usyk in just a week.

Usyk may only have fought five times as a heavyweight, but he’s already proved his chin..

Tyson Fury firmly believes that he will have a major advantage over former cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk when the pair meet on the 18th of May for the undisputed world championship – with the Brit suggesting that his opponent will struggle to deal with the power of a fully-fledged heavyweight.

“Size is what really matters, and we have weight divisions for a reason,” claimed ‘The Gypsy King’ in a press conference last month, per BBC Sport. “You can beat the average big ones, but you can’t beat the elite big ones.”

While there is some truth to Fury’s point, Usyk has defeated former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua twice – and it would be a stretch to call the Londoner “average”! The Ukrainian comfortably outpointed ‘AJ’ both times they shared the ring and certainly proved the quality of his chin when he was caught with a massive right hand from Joshua in the 10th round of their first meeting. As the footage below shows, the 37-year-old brushed off the huge blow in mere seconds and continued his march towards victory.

Fury v Usyk will be the first time all four major world heavyweight titles have been on the line in the modern era. The Morecambe fighter may believe that his size and reach advantage will allow him to take home all the gold, but former cruiserweight world champion – and Usyk opponent – Tony Bellew disagrees.

Bellew also highlighted the ability of ‘The Cat’ to perform under pressure, pointing out: “He’s gone to every single champion’s backyard and their patch and beat them up! He didn’t even take a punch against Murat Gassiev.” In fact, if it wasn’t for Fury’s seven-inch reach advantage, Bellew wouldn’t give his fellow countryman much chance of victory at all.

The showdown between Fury and Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is one of the most highly-anticipated in modern boxing history. Neither man has ever lost a professional contest – and they won’t be planning on that fact changing next weekend.

Fury has scored stoppage victories in 24 of his 34 wins and undoubtedly has the power to end the contest at a moment’s notice. However, Usyk has shown himself to be a top-class operator during his five-fight stint at heavyweight and will be intent upon proving the doubters – including Fury – wrong once again.

Deontay Wilder’s long-time trainer Malik Scott claims the ‘Bronze Bomber’ would agree to fight Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in London.

The former heavyweight world champion hasn’t fought since his shock defeat to Joseph Parker back in December and is desperate to get back in the win column in his upcoming fight with Zhilei Zhang on the 1st of June.

In one of the more intriguing plot twists, Wilder— a long-time rival of Eddie Hearn’s prized fighter Joshua — will represent Hearn’s Matchroom.

A showdown with the winner of Tyson Fury’s undisputed showdown with Usyk is on the American’s radar, and he believes he would have an easier night against the Ukrainian. That said, Wilder is also eyeing up a showdown with ‘AJ,’ and his trainer believes he’d be willing to fight the Brit in England.

“The Bronze Bomber is back. We make no excuses, but it was a very short camp for Parker and we’re going to right that wrong. He wants to knock Zhang out. I haven’t seen Deontay like this since the first Bermane Stiverne fight, his mindset is very, very violent. He’s got a contender hunger and the tiger in his eyes like he had early on in his career. Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh is reportedly hoping to stage Naoya Inoue’s next fight at Wembley Stadium in September.

Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, made his boxing debut in October when he fought Tyson Fury in Riyadh. The Cameroonian, 37, dropped Fury but lost a controversial decision in Riyadh, where he will box another Briton in “AJ” on 8 March.

Backstage at the press conference for the fight on Monday (15 January), Ngannou told The Independent and a select group of publications: “If I catch him, then he’s going to sleep. Remember, this is the heavyweight division and everyone is quite strong. You should keep your chin away.

And according to Joshua, they are both on the ‘same page’ when it comes to that fight.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Jon Jackson ahead of the Formula E Monaco E-Prix, last week, Joshua said: “We’re on the same page and he’s on the same page as the fans as well.

‘AJ’ had previously named Wilder as a potential opponent for his September return…

It looks ever more likely that former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will face either Zhilei Zhang or the winner of Daniel Dubois vs Fillip Hrgovic in his homecoming fight at Wembley Stadium in September. The Watford-born fighter had included former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on a four-man shortlist of potential opponents, but it seems that a clash with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is off the table for now.

Why Joshua Won’t Fight Wilder in September

Boxing fans have been anticipating the fight for years

Joshua named Wilder, alongside Zhang, Hrgovic and Dubois as the names who were in line to share the ring with him later this year. However, even if Wilder defeats Zhang in their fight on the 1st of June, he won’t be facing the Brit.

Turki Alalshikh – the mastermind behind Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in boxing – is close with Joshua – and has previously told the Londoner that he wants to see him fight the best available opposition for the remaining fights of his career. For as invested as he is in Joshua’s goals, though, Alalshikh has his own ambitions in the sport.

With that in mind, the Saudi chief is hoping Wilder will be able to fight Jared Anderson on his Riyadh Season card on the 3rd of August in Los Angeles, assuming he comes through his bout with Zhang unscathed. Alalshikh wrote on social media:

Joshua’s main ambition remains becoming a three-time world champion and – in an ideal world – he would fight the winner of the Oleksander Usyk vs Tyson Fury unification fight in just under three weeks. Unfortunately for the 34-year-old, the bout has an immediate rematch clause, meaning the winner isn’t likely to be available for a title defence until early 2025.

Unbeaten in his last four fights, Joshua is on a roll under his new trainer Ben Davidson and is looking like the fighter who first rose to stardom in the heavyweight division. His most recent win against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou was destructive and is much more credible than it looks on paper, seeing as the Cameroonian took the ‘Gypsy King’ the full distance and even managed to score a knockdown in their fight.
