Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou

Browsing

If there was any lingering doubts about Anthony Joshua and his abilities, the British superstar erased them in short order on Friday. Joshua delivered a thunderous knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It took Joshua less than two rounds to put away Ngannou and he did so in style with a pair of knockdowns before the emphatic final blow.

Joshua, who previously held three of the four recognized titles in the division, sent a message that he’s still an elite opponent to Tyson Fury, who was seated ringside for the bout. Fury struggled against Ngannou last October, suffering a knockdown before settling for a split decision win. Joshua now waits to see how Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk plays out before setting his next course of action. Joshua suffered a pair of decision defeats to Usyk in 2021 and 2022 to drop his titles.

Ngannou was not interviewed post fight, which has become a more common practice after fighters suffer such a devastating knockout, but he did post a statement on social media shortly after the fight.

“Sorry guys I let you all down,” Ngannou said. “Today was a bad day in the office but tomorrow will be another day. Thank you all for the love.”

Elsewhere on the card, Joseph Parker continued his ascent back to heavyweight title contention as he scored a majority decision over Zhilei Zhang in the co-main event. The win secured Parker the WBO interim title and could get hi a shot at Fury or Usyk, though he is a training partner with the “Gypsy King.” Parker earned the nod despite suffering a pair of knockdowns in the fight as Zhang was simply not active enough to win rounds. Plus, Rey Vargas managed to hold on to his WBC featherweight title, but by the slimmest of margins against Nick Ball. The two fight to a split draw, meaning the champion could not lose his title.

Joshua vs Ngannou fight start time update

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight fight with Francis Ngannou was initially scheduled for 11.20pm GMT, or 6.30pm ET. The ring walks are now expected to take place in around 15 minutes time, which means you can expect the fight to start at around 00.40am GMT, or 7.40pm ET.

So we’re running somewhere around 60-90 minutes behind schedule.

CompuBox’s fight analysis from Joseph Parker’s victory over Zhilei Zhang: “Zhang knocked Parker down in the third and eighth rounds, but Parker almost doubled up Zhang in power punches landed 79-40.

“Parker averaged 22 punches thrown per round over rounds 1-6, while Zhang averaged 26. Over rounds 7-12, Parker averaged 30 punches thrown per round, while Zhang decelerated to 19.5 punches thrown per round.

“Parker outlanded Zhang 53-31 over the last half of the fight.”

David Higgins, Joseph Parker’s manager, has just been interviewed on DAZN.

Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou Event Set for Friday to Avoid Clash with F1 Saudi Grand Prix - The SportsRush

“It’s still sinking in,” he says. “Momentum is a big part. It feels like everything has come together. That was a very tough fight.

“I was nervous (when the scorecards were read out) but the team is elated and we are very grateful to all of the fans and all of the promoters.”

Higgins also confirmed that Parker is contractually obliged to take on Zhang in a rematch. “They demanded a one-sided rematch. We wanted to keep busy so we took the fight. So we will do it again.”

What a victory for Joseph Parker. But the Zhilei Zhang rematch seems a bit of a weird move. Does anybody particularly want to see that fight again?

Joseph Parker has just been interviewed by DAZN and he has confirmed his next fight will be a rematch with Zhilei Zhang. He says: “Zhang is a tough man. But Andy Lee told me to keep my composure and to follow the plan. I am very happy and I can’t wait to go back home to celebrate.

“This is the result of hard work. Hard work. And hard work. It’s an incredible feeling to come back from the Joe Joyce loss and now look at where we are.

“And next — we’re going to do the Zhang fight again. That’s what the contract says. So that’s what we’re going to do.”

What a victory! Via majority decision.

The scorecards are read out: 113-113. 114-112. And 115-111.

That’s a huge victory for Parker and he is now the WBO interim champion.

Here we go then!

Zhilei Zhang’s corner have urged their man forward. Joseph Parker’s tell him to stick to the game plan and stay positive.

Zhang wings in a big right hook but misses wildly. Parker keeps doing what he has been doing, working the body and looking to land that overhand right.

Into the final minute. Zhang really hasn’t done much so far. He’s tired and this fight could be slipping away from him. Parker presses forward and again threads together some nice, eye-catching combinations.

And that’s that! Zhang twice sent Parker to the canvas. But I think the former WBO champion has done enough to win this on points.

For a man who has twice been put on his arse, Joseph Parker is boxing very, very well in the eleventh round of this heavyweight fight. He’s feinting nicely and causing Zhilei Zhang some real bother with his jab. Zhang needs to start letting his hands go but he’s unable to get in the positions to be effective.

It’s another busy round from Parker and surely another round in his favour. It promises to be an exciting final round. Both men need to win it and, even if they do, it still might not be enough!

The heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou Friday is shaping up to be far more than a boxing-mixed martial arts crossover.

Tyson Fury said he’ll give the winner a shot at his undisputed world heavyweight title — assuming Fury still has it after fighting Oleksandr Usyk May 18.

Also at stake:

For Ngannou, the former UFC champion, it’s a chance to prove he’s a formidable boxer. He delivered a stunning performance in October in his pro boxing debut.

Pitted against world champ Tyson Fury, Ngannou, 37, scored the only knockdown of the fight and landed punishing blows before losing a controversial split decision. But he said he has not yet shocked the world.

“I’m still in the factory, building,” Ngannou, a native of Cameroon, said this week. “You know, training, learning.”

For Joshua, the Brit, it’s an opportunity to continue his re-ascension. Joshua (27-3, 24 KO’s) has won three straight bouts after losing back-to-back fights to Usyk. But a loss to Ngannou would create serious doubts about whether Joshua, 34, can ever reclaim the championship belts he lost to Usyk in 2021.

This co-main event is a heavyweight match scheduled for 12 rounds.

Round 1: Big Bang Zhang, 6-foot-6 and 256 pounds, towering over Parker, who’s listed as 6-4 but suddenly looks much smaller. Tactical here, as fighters gauging each other and range. Forgettable round, Zhang slightly more aggressive. Zhang 10, Parker 9.

Zhilei Zhang is about to face Joseph Parker in a showdown for the WBO interim heavyweight championship, in the fight before Anthony Joshua’s clash with Francis Ngannou.

Both contenders are currently enjoying something of a hot streak and a victory would thrust them into contention for the world title. Particularly as the championship belts are expected to fracture following Oleksandr Usyk’s anticipated unification bout against Tyson Fury later this year.

Zhang endured his maiden professional loss against Filip Hrgović in August 2022, yet he triumphed over Joe Joyce twice last year. And he has vowed to swiftly defeat former world champion Parker in their upcoming match.

He told Queensberry: “Their team will study my fights, and study the Hrgovic fight and the Jerry Forrest fight (a majority draw). They believe going into the second half of the fight, my conditioning will go down, and they will have the leverage to beat me on points.

“Even if that happens, I’ll beat him in deep water. I prefer to do it with Chinese speed. I don’t yet have the opportunity to go against the top two (Fury and Uzyk), but when that day comes, I’ll be beating them.”

CompuBox’s fight analysis: “At the halfway point of the fight, Vargas held a 59 to 30 advantage in power punches landed and a 40 to 13 advantage in body punches landed.

“After averaging 9.8 power punches landed over rounds 1-6, Vargas’s production dipped to 7.6 power punches landed in rounds 7-12. Ball out-landed Vargas 58 to 47 over rounds 7-12, in addition to knocking Vargas down in rounds eight and eleven.”

Manny Pacquiao has just spoken to Sky Sports and the boxing legend seems to think the mixed martial artist could upset his peer this evening!

“I love this fight because it’s going to be a good fight. Ngannou is a fighter, he’s very strong. And I back Ngannou,” he said.

“Joshua needs to defend well and to move around. He can’t stand there and go toe to toe.”

Pacquiao was also asked about his future in the sport. Earlier in the night, Conor Benn suggested he could take on the 45-year-old later this year.

“Yeah I’m working on it and I hope we can finalise it after this event and before I go back home,” Pacquiao added.

Rey Vargas has also just spoken to DAZN. Through the help of a translator, he has said he is happy to face Nick Ball in a rematch.

“Of course I did enough (to win),” he said. “I have character and I have courage. He had the crowd behind him.

“Fitness was an issue. And a year with no activity impacted my performance. But I got a draw even though I did not like the way they counted those knockdowns.

“But yes, of course I will give him a rematch.”

Frank Warren, Nick Ball’s promoter, is incandescent. He tells DAZN he’s certain the WBC will order an immediate rematch.

“He won the fight. We’re not crybabies. But he won the fight. Listen to the crowd,” Warren says.

“I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t understand it. He had him down twice. I’m sure the rematch will be ordered by the WBC.”

  • The bout at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena begins at 2am local time on Saturday (23:00 GMT on Friday).
  • ‘I believe I can knock him out’

Anthony Joshua says he’s relishing the contest in the latest code crossover between boxing and Mixed Martial Arts.

Francis Ngannou was scoffed at when he opted to make his boxing debut against world champion Tyson Fury in the so-called “Battle of the Baddest” in October last year.

The doubters were silenced, however, when Ngannou sent Fury to the canvas in the third round before losing only on a controversial split decision.

Joshua is not intimidated, though, by the prospect of facing the former MMA champion.

“This Friday, it’s going to go down, so I can’t wait for the opportunity to show my skills and combat this person who thinks he can knock me out,” Joshua said of Ngannou.

“I believe I can knock him out. Definitely, I would love to knock him out and make a statement.

“He has to be ready for the shots which are coming his way because I’m a man who will be standing in front of him, bringing him a lot of hell.”

Ngannou’s road to MMA glory from Cameroonian struggles

Francis Ngannou has crammed a lot into his 37 years.

The child of a single mother, he had to walk six miles to school and from the age of 10, he shovelled sand from open quarries, his meagre income helping to buy food and books.

“It was work meant for adults, but we didn’t have any options,” said Ngannou of his back-breaking labours which paid less than $2 a day.

“I didn’t like my life, I felt like I missed my childhood.”

In 2012, at the age of 26 and fired by dreams of becoming a professional boxer, Ngannou, now boasting a towering physique carved from his brutal work in the sand pits, made a break for Europe and a better life.

Crammed with others into the back of a pick-up truck, he crossed the unforgiving Sahara, travelled through Nigeria, Niger and Algeria before reaching Morocco.

Then, after half a dozen failed attempts, he finally made it over the Mediterranean to Spain where he was promptly jailed for two months for making an illegal crossing.

He took a train to Paris and lived in a car park before local boxing coach Didier Carmont found him a place to live and a gym in which to train.

Despite an early fascination with Mike Tyson, Ngannou graduated towards Mixed Martial Arts and in 2021, became the UFC world heavyweight champion.

Ngannou won’t let go of a Fury rematch

Francis Ngannou’s desire to face Tyson Fury in a rematch is quite clear.

The war of words appears as though it will only intensify until the pair meet again in the ring:

    Last up for Ngannou

The first professional boxing bout for Francis Ngannou pitted him against Tyson Fury.

It ended in defeat for the Cameroonian on a split decision, although he drew many plaudits for his display.

The former UFC champion was clearly irked by the defeat, but also a key moment in which Ngannou says he was clearly elbowed by Fury.

“I was a lion fighting a pack of hyenas – Tyson Fury, the referee for allowing an illegal elbow, and the judges for their score cards,” Ngannou posted on social media platform, X, after the fight.

“I watched the elbow video tens of times and I don’t understand why the referee didn’t take a point from him.”

    Ngannou crosses combat codes

Former UFC star Francis Ngannou’s switch to boxing last year had been mooted for months following speculation of a crossover fight with Tyson Fury.

The 36-year-old Cameroonian was still UFC heavyweight champion when contract talks with the leading promotion collapsed once Ngannou said his demands for health insurance and personal sponsorships were rejected.

UFC President Dana White stripped Ngannou of the belt in January 2023.

In July, it was confirmed Ngannou would indeed meet with Fury with the date later fixed for October 28.

The first fight of the card will be at 3:20pm UK time, which is 6:20pm Saudi time. The fights will run through the afternoon and evening with Zhilei Zhang versus Joseph Parker to start at around 10:20pm UK time.

The big one, Joshua against Ngannou, will get underway at around 11:20pm UK time.

Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou start time is revealed
British fight fans are set for a late night after the start time for Anthony Joshua’s showdown with Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia was confirmed.

The winning combo from Novytskyi included an illegal shot to the back of the head but it was only a matter of time anyway.

He moves onto bigger and better things. That was actually the first time Torres had been stopped in his six defeats, but he was poor.

RESULT: Novytskyi stops Torres in the third round

Another good left-right combo from the Ukranian early on. He may have hurt Torres at the end of the last round and the underdog hits the canvas, but he’s pulled down.

He’s walked onto a lot of punches here.

This time he goes down! Nice combination, Torres shakes his head on his knees, and the referee waves it off. Oxygen for the American in the aftermath.

About as one-sided as it gets.

ROUND 2 – Torres continues to struggle

Torres has come out swinging in the second round but he’s absolutely all over the place, I’ll be honest. He can’t get close.

Novytskyi throws an upper cut in this round and it’s another of domination for the six-foot-six fighter.

The jab as impactful too. 20-18 it is.

Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou: Full fight week schedule | DAZN News GB

ROUND 1 – Novytskyi dominating early on

The bell rings for round one then and it’s a bit of a slow start from both fighters but there’s a lot of time. Early control from Novytskyi with a few straight left jabs.

Torres has a huge height disadvantage and also with his reach. He’s takes a few shots to the face, a few body shots, and Torres is on the back foot despite going for a big shot himself.

It’s a matter of time. Could be the next round.

Joshua now has a fight to analyse

Haye has just mentioned that Joshua will now have a fight of Ngannou’s to assess in terms of analysis. Fury won’t have had that.

Ngannou said it too to us earlier this week. I wonder how much of an impact that has.

‘The liklihood of hearing the final bell is slim,’ Haye says.

Novytskyi vs Juan Torres first up

DAZN’s coverage of the prelim fights gets underway at 3pm UK time and we will start with Andrii Novytskyi versus Juan Torres in a heavyweight contest.

Ukranian Novytskyi is 28 and undefeated from nine fights. Torres is 37 and 11 for five from 16 fights, though is on a seven-match win-streak.

There will be eight, three minute rounds in that one.

What next for Joshua?

The predictions seem quite split for tonight. The classic boxer, or the MMA powerhouse?

Joshua is the favourite. But what if it doesn’t go to plan for him?

Where would he go next? Facing Usyk – likely ever again – would be off the cars. A bout with Fury would be possible but unlikely.

Wilder? Whyte? Retirement…?

And what if it does?

Here are the key details to know ahead of the highly anticipated Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou fight.

Anthony Joshua dismissed suggestions that Francis Ngannou is a ‘gimmick’ opponent and believes the former UFC champion was wrongly denied a victory over Tyson Fury.

Joshua has won his last three fights, the most recent against Otto Wallin in a dominant five-round win in December, and will face Ngannou in their non-title contest in Friday’s crossover super-fight in Saudi Arabia, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The mixed martial arts star made his professional boxing debut in October last year where he knocked down Tyson Fury in the third round only to be denied victory as Fury escaped with a contentious split-decision win.

“I was watching the Fury and Ngannou fight from home and from what I saw I thought he won,” Joshua told Sky Sports.

“It’s not a gimmick, it’s not something that’s benefiting the broadcasters, it’s not just a fight for entertainment purposes.

“This is a serious fight with someone who is prepared and understands the dynamic of boxing and he’s putting up a good fight against the apparently generational great. So, I look at it now as something completely different.

“To be classified as a world-class heavyweight I would say that you have to stay there for a period of time. But I think that he’s an athlete with a lot of potential.

“I think he should stay in boxing in my opinion, he’s got great potential to make waves.

“In terms of the word ‘gimmick’ we can get rid of that. In terms of the whole crossover aspect of what boxing is, it’s not that Ngannou was a gimmick or Fury was a gimmick, but the whole MMA crossing over into boxing I looked at it as a gimmick, but now I can see that there are certain fighters in the MMA world that can box, and he’s one of them.

“It’s good news for us fighters and good news for broadcasters because they’ve got me and Ngannou going at it in a few days.”

Great Britain’s Joshua suffered successive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk before winning his three consecutive fights whilst Ngannou was the reigning UFC heavyweight champion before he left the promotion to begin his boxing career and has 17 wins and three losses from his time in MMA.

“My mentality is that I’m fighting a talented fighter, like every fight there is massive jeopardy and I’ve got to take it seriously,” Joshua continued.

“At the time I looked at it more as a benefit for the broadcasters and sponsors. Now I look at it as someone who is serious about fighting, serious about MMA and serious about boxing.

“That’s why I’m here, because I love the same thing he does, I love to fight. When I saw the fight with Tyson Fury I thought: ‘He knows what he’s doing, he can handle himself.’

“A lot of people say he won the fight and I thought this is a great challenge for me because I need to figure out more about myself, if it’s not a challenge then I am going to stick to what I know best and I’m going to stay in my comfort zone.

“But when I saw the fight he put up against Fury, I thought this is a challenge which has driven me to push on and push on from my career so it’s going to have massive benefits for me in the long-run as well.”

Before Fury fought Ngannou, he said the whole of boxing’s reputation is on his shoulders, but Joshua doesn’t feel that kind of pressure.

Anthony Joshua says a fight with Tyson Fury is 'part of God's plan in my life' | UK News | Sky News

“I haven’t thought of it that way because it’s only my pressure. I don’t put that pressure on myself and I don’t have that thought about anything. I just think about winning and doing what I need to do, that’s my mentality,” Joshua added.

“It’s a fight, it’s a 50/50 fight. Anything can happen. Crazier things have happened before. It is what it is. It’s a great opportunity for me to go back to work. If I didn’t take this opportunity that’s presented to me, when would I be fighting next?

“Call it whatever you want to call it, I’m just happy to be at work and doing my job and I can’t wait for the next opportunity that presents itself.”

Anthony Joshua takes on Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia on Friday as he looks to avoid a major slip-up in his bid to become world champion for a third time

Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou clash on Friday – and we will have all the latest news ahead of the heavyweight showdown.

Joshua will be looking for his fourth win in succession after recording three wins in 2023; against Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius and Otto Wallin. The Brit should be preparing to take on Deontay Wilder this week but the American wrecked those plans when he lost to Joseph Parker two nights before Christmas.

Ngannou almost stunned the boxing world into silence last October when he dropped Tyson Fury in the third round of his boxing debut only to lose a controversial split decision after 10 intriguing rounds. Here, we will bring you the latest news from fight week in Riyadh ahead of the latest test in Joshua’s career…

Ngannou: Joshua is more serious than ‘playboy’ Fury

Francis Ngannou fight an option for Anthony Joshua, says Eddie Hearn - BBC Sport

”Anthony Joshua never trash talks, his personality is more serious unlike Tyson Fury who is more like a playboy. I think when it comes to fighting, they both know how to fight and that’s what I’m focused on,” Ngannou said in an exclusive interview with Mirror Fighting.

Ngannou: I was born to fight

Francis Ngannou insists he is a born fighter who is capable of knocking out Anthony Joshua ahead of their bout on Friday.

Ngannou insists his lack of experience in the ring will not prevent him from springing a shock in Riyadh.

“I finished my training camp yesterday and I feel good,” the 37-year-old told Sky Sports News. “It has been a tough eight weeks to get here. I feel like I did everything that could be done.

“I believe if I land on anybody I knock them out. But the question is how to land, that is the hardest thing. How to carry that power and energy for 10 rounds and still be able to knock someone out after all the fatigue. I don’t have experience in boxing but, don’t make any mistake, I had a lot of experiencing in life, of fighting.

Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury: How does the ex-UFC star compare against the boxing heavyweights in height, weight, and reach

“I view my fighting spirit as high as anybody else’s. I don’t have any (boxing) experience but I know I can fight. You’re born as a fighter, you don’t become a fighter, I do believe that.”

Joshua the favourite

Anthony Joshua will start as the odds-on favourite on Friday – but so did Tyson Fury last October. On that occasion, Fury was dropped in the third round by the former UFC champion, only to recover and outpoint Ngannou after 10 rounds. This fight week feels different however, with no-one writing off the Cameroonian in quite the same way they did last year.
