Ngannou is scheduled to fight Joshua in his second professional boxing match in just over two weeks and his PFL debut has now been announced

Francis Ngannou will fight either Renan Ferreira or Ryan Bader on his MMA return after announcing the bout just two weeks before his boxing fight against Anthony Joshua.

Ngannou vacated his UFC heavyweight title last January and split with the promotion in order to pursue a career in boxing. The Cameroonian signed with rival MMA promotion PFL just months later and he will now fight the winner of Ferreira and Bader’s title clash later this year.

Ferreira and Bader are fighting at the PFL vs Bellator World Championship event this Saturday at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – the same venue which will host Ngannou’s showdown with Joshua on March 8. Ngannou will be in attendance for Ferreira and Bader’s fight and could face-off in the SmartCage with the winner.

“The PFL is excited to announce Francis Ngannou’s return to MMA in the PFL pay-per-view division will be against the winner of the PFL Champion vs Bellator Champion heavyweight superfight between Renan Ferreira and Ryan Bader,” PFL CEO Peter Murray said.

“Francis is a true combat sports icon with a global fan base and appeal. We, along with the rest of the MMA world, will be watching to see who his first opponent will be, Ferreira or Bader.” Ngannou was cageside for Ferreira’s knockout win against Maurice Greene last year as the Brazilian went on to capture the promotion’s heavyweight title and $1million prize.

Bader makes his PFL debut against Ferreira as Saturday marks the promotion’s first event since acquiring Bellator last November. Ngannou admitted he’s been paying close attention to Ferreira for a while and that fight intrigues him more than a match-up against Bellator champion Bader.

Francis Ngannou opens as a sizable betting underdog vs. Anthony Joshua

“I think out of those two, Renan Ferreira is the upcoming thing in the heavyweight division. I’ve been saying that for a year now. Even before the beginning of the PFL season, I knew this guy had something but I saw some clips of him. He has something quite special as far as speed and accuracy go. I can tell that he is somebody who is going to propose a lot of challenges in the future,” he told Mirror Fighting.

10 months after last stepping foot in the ring, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has his next dance partner. Mike Coppinger reports that Davis and Frank Martin have agreed to headline a PBC pay-per-view “in late spring/early summer.”

Davis (29-0, 27 KO) got off to a red-hot start in 2023, dispatching Hector Garcia and Ryan Garcia in the span of 3.5 months. That marked his fastest turnaround since 2017, but self-inflicted setbacks halted his momentum in his tracks. Davis, who had plead guilty to hit-and-run shortly after defeating the first Garcia, was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest, only to violate the terms less than a month in and spend the rest of the time in jail.

There had been some chatter as to whom he’d face in his return, with Conor Benn making the most recent spurned bid, but it now appears that Martin (18-0, 12 KO) will get the call. “The Ghost” picked up a head of steam with a three-fight, three-win 2022, but like Davis, it didn’t last. Martin had significantly more trouble than expected in last July’s WBC eliminator against Artem Harutyunyan, his sole bout of 2023, and subsequently turned down a guaranteed title shot against Shakur Stevenson.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather was left heartbroken following the death of his long-time assistant Marikit “Kitchie” Laurico, who passed away last March due to unknown health problems.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather got visibly upset when he talked about his dear friend Marikit “Kitchie” Laurico, who passed away last year. Kitchie was like family to him and worked with him for all of his 25 years in boxing.

Mayweather referred to his long-time assistant as like the “sister he never had” as he broke down in tears in an emotional interview. She died last March and was unable to do the two things she dreamed of: seeing a Super Bowl in Las Vegas and celebrating her 50th birthday in Aruba.

Mayweather shared his heartbreaking on The Pivot Podcast. He said: “Kitchie was the only person in life that I could talk about anything to, that knew my deepest secrets.

“There was no male or female in my life that I told more stuff to than her. She taught me a lot, she helped me a lot. Through rain, sleet, snow or hail, she had my back.

“All my assistant wanted to do was support me and help me be the best man I can be and she wanted my kids just to be positive and she was a positive person.”

Mayweather broke down in tears when he remembered that Kitchie couldn’t be there for the recent Super Bowl. The boxer said that she had some health issues but did not give details.

He helped her get medical assistance just a week before she died. He added: “We argue, we debate, we help each other. That’s a sister I never had. The best friend I ever had.”

We thank all of you who have shared real love and positive vibes with her.

“We appreciate your patience and respect for our privacy. We’re currently planning a homegoing/ celebration of life for Kitchie, and we’ll share more details when they’re ready.”

Ahead of his blockbuster fight against Ngannou, British-Nigeria boxer Anthony Joshua has suggested that it is not a big deal if the Cameroonian had knocked down Tyson Fury in his previous fight.

AJ admitted that he was not initially keen on his upcoming bout against the former UFC champion.

The pair will now face off in a massive clash at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 8.

Answer: I don’t think I’m far away, but I still have to reach that level that I have already shown on many occasions, both in tennis and confidence, knowing how to manage certain moments.

Q: What is Jannik Sinner doing right to win five titles in four and a half months?

A: I have always said that there is no secret. He has worked very hard and it shows. In every tournament he is very focused on the things he has to do, he is a hard worker. I said it with Juan Carlos [Ferrero] many times when we see him. If I compare him with the Sinner of before, he has changed to [become] a professional. Before he was [a professional], but now he is even more so, working every day and having things clear. The day-to-day work pays off and that is what has happened with Jannik, and I am happy for him and his team.

Q: Would you like to play with Rafa Nadal again before he retires? At Roland Garros, for example?

A: Of course I would like to, wherever it is. I would like to face him again, to compete against him, that face to face on the court… I would like to experience it one or two more times. As many as possible. It would be incredible to be able to play him again.

Q: You commented on Saturday, after losing the semifinal of Buenos Aires to Nicolas Jarry, the defeat hurt you. Which match that you lost hurt you the most?

A: There have been several defeats that have hurt me, like those of Zverev and Djokovic in the ATP Finals and the last one of Jarry in Buenos Aires.

Q: The last time you cried over a defeat?

A: I’m not sure, but I would say after losing in the semifinals of the ATP Finals in Turin against Djokovic.

Q: Rafael Nadal commented last week in an interview that Novak Djokovic is the best in history. Is the GOAT debate over?

A: Everyone has their own perception of things. For some it is Djokovic the best, for others it is Rafa, for others it is Federer. Rafa said that it is Djokovic at the level of numbers and I also think so. At the level of numbers, Djokovic is the best in history, there is no doubt about that. I think to say who is the best is something that goes beyond the numbers. All three are there and for me all three are the best.

Talk of Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ next opponent being Conor Benn has already fizzled. According to Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, Davis turned down a lucrative offer to make the fight happen.

After Benn’s win over Peter Dobson earlier this month, Davis and Benn traded words on social media. The two sides seemed to agree to enter into negotiations for a fight, but Hearn said Davis “didn’t really want to discuss” the offer that was made.

“We made him an offer, which he felt he didn’t want to discuss further,” Hearn told iFL TV. “…It was over the $10 [million guaranteed] but it also had PPV bonuses beyond that, gate bonuses beyond that. So it could’ve been $20 million, could’ve been $25 million. But he didn’t really want to discuss it.

“I made him an offer that I felt was an offer that was quite powerful for the fight and could also lead to a lot more than that beyond the basic but, you know…I think he probably doesn’t really understand the dynamic of the deal, the numbers. I might go back.”

Why not?" – Eddie Hearn signs off on Conor Benn vs. Gervonta Davis next

Benn is still waiting on the results of his recent hearing with the British Boxing Board of Control in regards to his failed drug tests ahead of his planned 2023 fight with Chris Eubanks Jr.

Hearn said that the team has pivoted to several other opponents for Benn for a fight that he hopes will take place in the U.K., assuming the results of the BBBofC hearing go their way. Among those opponents is former junior welterweight and welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

“Danny Garcia reached out to our team to talk to me directly, and I’ll be talking to him this week,” Hearn said. “I love the fight with Danny Garcia, the USA or the UK. Like I said, four or five names, and he’s definitely in the mix.”

Garcia’s most recent fight came in July 2022 when he defeated Jose Benavidez Jr. That is Garcia’s only fight since the end of 2020.

Davis has not fought since knocking out Ryan Garcia in April 2023. In May, Davis was sentenced to 90 days house arrest and three years probation for a 2021 hit-and-run incident. He violated the terms of his house arrest and served the remainder of his 90 days in jail before being released on July 14.

While Davis has become one of the primary faces of boxing, he has not faced a deep roster of opponents and should be looking to parlay his fame into big fights. With Benn off the table, options are seemingly running thin for top-tier opponents who would be available for a summer date with Davis.

IV Golf star Phil Mickelson has achieved many great things in the world of golf but one dream continues to elude him as he runs out of time to match Tiger Woods’ grand slam

The clock is ticking for Phil Mickelson as he tries to match Tiger Woods’ major championship grand slam, with his US Open dreams fading.

The 53-year-old has six major titles to his name and has pieced together one of the greatest careers in the history of the game, but glory in his national open has eluded him, with six agonising second-place finishes. The most recent of which came in 2013 when he was outlasted by Justin Rose at Merion.

The 45-time PGA Tour winner, one of LIV Golf’s flagship signings when the breakaway tour launched in 2022, is coming to the end of his career, but his 2021 triumph in the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island and a second-place finish at The Masters last year showed he still has the ability to compete in the biggest tournaments.

Tiger Woods on 'Difference of Opinions' About PGA Tour with Phil Mickelson

His near misses in the US Open have only furthered his desire to achieve his dream of lifting the famous trophy, insisting he will not retire from elite golf until his chance is definitively over.

He said in 2021: “Winning the US Open has been a lifelong and elusive dream, and I’ve come close so many times. You can’t win if you don’t play.”

Mickelson’s window of opportunity is closing quickly, though. The lack of ranking points on offer in LIV Golf has seen him plummet to 140 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), not earning any points since The Open Championship last summer, meaning he has to rely on his previous successes in the majors.

Mickelson has lifetime exemptions for The Masters and the PGA Championship, and he has punched his ticket for The Open Championship until he is 60. But his entry into the US Open is only guaranteed until 2026, with his Kiawah Island victory earning a five-year exemption.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson planning $10 million made-for-TV match, according to report | Golf News and Tour Information | Golf Digest

Players on both sides of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf argument are hoping for a positive resolution to the proposed merger involving the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which would reopen the door for LIV’s stars to play their way into the majors, but the unpredictable twists and turns in the professional game over the past two years suggests nothing can be taken for granted.

As things stand, time is running out for Mickelson to claim the final piece of the puzzle in the shape of the US Open Championship Trophy, with the odds certainly stacked against him. This year’s US Open will be held at Pinehurst, with the 2025 edition hosted at Oakmont.

Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods Have Registered for the U.S. Open - Sports Illustrated

Although Mickelson has enjoyed great success throughout his career, he has spent much of it in Woods’ shadow, never reaching the top spot of the OWGR due to Woods’ dominance during Mickelson’s prime. Woods completed the career grand slam when he lifted the Claret Jug in 2000, and it appears Mickelson’s chance of equaling that feat will pass him by if he does not beat the odds in the next couple of years.

I went to watch the game’s biggest draw. I saw a sport facing down a crisis.

Before he was even on the tee on Friday at the PGA Tour event he hosts, onlookers crowded around the clubhouse and first tee to get a look at Tiger Woods. This is always how it is, wherever Woods plays, but it was an especially pretty scene overlooking the first hole at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. The tee sits on a cliff, and at the top of the vista, a mass of people stood there to see Woods. They tolerated the group ahead of him, clapping politely for actual tournament contenders Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay. The first roar came when Woods showed up behind them and walked into a makeshift kitchen next to the tee. The loudest roar came when Woods actually hit his tee shot. He was the second player of three in his group to do so, but the crowd started to scatter after Woods’ shot, because nobody was there to see Gary Woodland.

Not two hours later, Woods was on a golf cart, riding away from the seventh hole and back toward the clubhouse. Woods is about 90 percent of the attraction at any event he plays, and so the audience had erupted with speculation about what had gone wrong. The quick speculation in the galleries was that it was his back, which he’d said had gone into spasms when he shanked a shot on the 18th hole the day before. A little bit after 2 p.m., a convoy of emergency vehicles pulled up outside the clubhouse. Medical personnel backed up an ambulance to the building, and a throng of media crowded around expecting to watch Woods get transported to a hospital. But Woods did not leave in an ambulance. It turned out to be the flu.

Tiger Woods breaks up with Nike | CNN Business

The day was painfully microcosmic of what the Tiger Woods experience looks like in 2024. Nobody in golf has the ability to hold attention like Woods, even now, five years after his last Masters win and during a period in which he struggles to start, let alone finish, tournaments. Woods has played six events since 2022’s Masters and withdrawn from three of them. He is 48 now, old enough that he is probably done winning tour events but not so old that winning is impossible. Golf’s most immediate existential crisis these days is that the Saudi Arabian government is on the verge of either partnering with the tour or trying to overtake it, depending on the outcome of ongoing negotiations. But the other problem confronting the sport is that there is only one Tiger Woods, and he will only be around so much longer before he exits.

As the Genesis Invitational wore on, the problem only became more obvious. For most of the weekend, one of the PGA Tour’s marquee events had as much energy as a nap. During a brief period on Sunday, the tournament looked primed for a tight finish, with five players tied at one point on the final nine holes. The event became a three-shot victory for Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama, who shot a brilliant 62 on Sunday to pull ahead from six shots down entering the day. It was a quality finish to what had been a pretty dull weekend. And that dullness started to set in the moment Woods rolled away.

Tiger Woods treated with 'IV bag' after withdrawing from Genesis Invitational with 'flu-like symptoms' | CNN

The central tension around Woods is that he still commands a circus everywhere he goes, but he faces the same physical limitations—more of them, even—as everybody else. As he hit his first tee shot, vendors walked away from their stations to watch him swing. On the second hole, he got a king’s welcome after birdieing the first, a short par-5 that most players easily conquer. On the third, a couple of guys riding inflatable tigers awaited him on the green. On the fifth, a group of young men wore shirts adorned with Tiger’s mug shot from a 2017 DUI arrest. (He pleaded guilty to reckless driving.) On the sixth, he recovered from a bad tee shot to make a par putt: “Big Cat on the loose!” someone yelled. “Let’s fucking go, Tiger!” another yelled. The roars for Woods have always been and will always be the loudest sound in golf.

But other things happened during his round. On the fifth tee, while his playing partners hit, I watched Woods slump over a cooler on the side of the tee box. At the end of that hole, his partners were putting out, and Woods walked expeditiously to a bathroom on the next hole. On the seventh hole, he hit his tee shot and then gave up the fight, getting onto a cart and riding out of the event. It says something about the state of his career that the widespread reaction to Woods’ exit was first relief at the news that it was just an illness, rather than his back or his foot failing him again. At least it likely would not be long-term.

Tiger Woods' schedule taking shape after PNC announcement

It’s hard to explain from afar how much the air leaves the balloon at a PGA Tour event when Woods stops playing in the middle of his round. I stood on the seventh green waiting for Woods to hit his approach shot, a few feet away from a crowd of people four deep who were expecting to watch the best player ever hit his approach shot and then make a birdie. Then Woods drove past in the passenger seat of the cart, and the people waiting for him realized they wouldn’t get to see any shots at all. On the way up the next hole, the guys riding the inflatable tigers chatted with two other guys in orange tiger T-shirts. All looked bereft. The guy in first place was playing the hole 20 yards to their right. They were not watching.

It was the paradox of Woods at this stage of his career in full bloom. He is clearly in a reduced state, no matter what comes of his withdrawal from the Genesis. Yet everyone is relying on him for something. Fans who buy tickets are still doing it hoping that Woods will personally justify the cost of showing up. Media still rely on him for everything from article clicks (thanks for reading!) to television ratings. Other players and the PGA Tour rely on Woods to improve the tour’s business and to be a bulwark against the Saudis’ LIV Golf. The rival tour has plucked player after player, but it has not gotten the player. Woods had the chance to make hundreds of millions of dollars from the Saudis, but he stuck with the PGA Tour and then became a mover and shaker on the tour’s governance board.

Tiger Woods withdraws from Masters with injury after matching record

This dynamic should not be able to hold. The PGA Tour should not be in a state of heightened dependency on Woods as he nears 50 and demonstrates time and again how challenging it is for him to even get through an entire tournament. But with the tour’s star power depleted by LIV and Woods now playing a dual role as both golf’s biggest star and a guy on the front lines of the fight, the sport does not seem well equipped to have a thriving elite professional game without him.

Of course, the looming specter of golf without Woods has overhung the sport for well over a decade. This tournament wasn’t Woods’ first comeback after a long absence, or his second, or his third. It did feel a bit different than the typical Tiger return, though. He had a new caddy on his bag. (Joe LaCava, who won the Masters with Woods in 2019, was a group ahead with his new player, Cantlay, who was then leading the tournament.) Tiger was wearing a new clothing line, his “Sun Day Red” collection with golf manufacturer TaylorMade. (He split with Nike last month after a relationship that had spanned his entire professional career.)

And he came back to a tour that still has most of the world’s best players, but now has far from all of them. Even if he hadn’t had to leave the tournament, he was out of contention by not quite halfway through his second round. Everything about Woods at a golf tournament is different now, except that watching him struggle through his rounds is still more captivating to more people than anything else on offer.
