And here comes Tyson Fury. He’s the clear crowd favorite, looking relaxed and ready as he plays to the masses. Bonnie Tyler urgent 1984 anthem Holding Out For A Hero plays at ear-splitting volume, a bit of English pride.

Oleksandr Usyk has made his entrance. He walks quickly and methodically to the ring like a tiger as his personal hymn (Гімн Олександра Усика by Браття) plays on the arena sound system.

Ring announcer Michael Buffer has emerged from the tunnel. He’s just called for a performance of Saudi Arabia’s national anthem, a brief instrumental rendition that’s played through quickly. Now the (great) Atlanta rapper JID is performing in an open-air cube that descended from the rafters directly above the ring.

It’s a quarter past midnight in Riyadh as the crowd awaits the entrances of Fury and Usyk. Here’s a dispatch from Donald McRae, our man at ringside:

Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk LIVE - Undisputed heavyweight title showdown live coverage from Saudi Arabia - Eurosport

I must be a sucker for punishment as I have been in the arena since 5pm, Riyadh time. The first six bouts on a long old 10-fight card were watched mostly in silence with the Kingdom Arena slowly filling to around a third of its capacity by 10pm. It’s apparently sold out tonight, with around 22,000 people expected. On the swanky side of ringside the seat names suggest that Anthony Joshua will be watching Fury v Usyk next to Cristiano Ronaldo. AJ’s name is printed in full while his pal for the night is, of course, on CR7 brand on the piece of paper pinned to a chair.

Sergey Kovalev, who had been out of the ring for two years, should really slip away into permanent retirement. Not many were really watching but he took a methodical beating before being knocked down by Sweden’s Robin Sirwan Safar just seconds before the final bell. There were then two quick first round stoppage wins for Mark Chamberlain, the lightweight, and Moses Itauma, the promising 19-year-old British heavyweight.

The fight of the night so far, by some distance, was the all-British IBF world title fight between the super-featherweights, Anthony Cacace from Belfast and Joe Cordina from Cardiff. Cordina, the champion, was dropped heavily in round three. He looked in serious trouble but, with immense grit, fought back. Cacace, however, was relentless. Cordina, having apparently been through a really draining weight cut this week, wilted under a fierce barrage of punches in round eight and the referee rightly rescued him. Cacace, having just become a world champion, was understandably jubilant.

Serena Williams has changed the face of female tennis in more ways than one.

The all-time great dominated the sport throughout her career, driving the women’s’ game into an new era of athleticism, and she was never afraid to push the boundaries when it came to fashion.

And this was never more the case than at the 2018 French Open, when Williams stunned fans by wearing a black catsuit as she won her first Grand Slam match since giving birth.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion said at the time that the outfit made her feel like a ‘warrior’, with it drawing comparisons to the Marvel film Black Panther released that year.

It was revealed in a social media post after the match that the design had helped the American to control the blood clots which had placed her life at risk after giving birth.

“If I can do it, so can you. Love you all!!”

But this did not go down well with all in the sport.

Later that summer, French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli announced that the tournament would be introducing a dress code to ban similar looks to the tennis legend’s.

Guidicelli said in an interview with Tennis Magazine: “I think we sometimes went too far.

“The combination of Serena this year, for example, it will no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

The unpopular decision even prompted the WTA to announce a rule change of their own that year, permitting players to wear leggings and by extension, catsuits.

“So I think there should have been and could have been – and whether there was or not, I was in it and I wasn’t getting out of it – understanding around that whole outfit.”

NEW YORK — For the first time since arguably the most curious pairing in recent boxing history was announced, Mike Tyson and Jake Paul met face to face.

Inside the iconic Apollo Theater, where singular artists like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, James Brown and Lauryn Hill once performed, Tyson and Paul held a press conference — alongside undercard fighters Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano — to hype their July 20 boxing match that will stream on Netflix at no additional cost to subscribers.

The atmosphere was festive and relaxed. There was no bad blood. The fighters in both matches expressed abundant respect and admiration for their opponents. During the face-off photo op at the end, as Tyson and Paul held their stares inches apart from each other, Tyson even playfully shadow boxed Paul with quick hooks to his opponent’s body. Both then broke out in laughter and lightly shoved each other.

Certainly, there was the usual bravado that characterizes these events.

Mike Tyson shouts ‘where’s this kid’s mother?’ as 14-year-old asks lewd question at his and Jake Paul’s press

“Yeah, look, they call him ‘Iron Mike’ Tyson,” Paul said at one point, “but I’m titanium Jake Paul.”

And this: “I’m going to show Mike who has more power.”

Yet, the press conference struggled at times to stake its promotion of the event as an exhibition, or the officially sanctioned fight that it has become.

An hour before it kicked off, the line for fans to file into the Apollo snaked around 125th Street and 8th Avenue. They wore New York Knicks hats and Tyson T-shirts with screen prints of his face splashed across the chest. The crowd, undoubtedly, was more sympathetic toward Tyson, who hails from the Brownsville neighborhood in east Brooklyn.

Tiger Woods will enter further talks over the US Ryder Cup captaincy in the coming weeks, with the body responsible for hiring Zach Johnson’s successor pledging to give the 15-time major champion more time to make his decision.

Woods cast doubt over his willingness to accept the role earlier this week, citing his involvement in golf’s slow-burning merger negotiations as a barrier to being able to commit to next year’s clash with Europe in New York.

With Luke Donald reappointed in November, the Americans already appear to be losing ground on their rivals, but PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh insisted Woods will not be rushed into making a call.

Waugh said: ‘We have had conversations for months. We have also had conversations at the Ryder Cup committee, multiple conversations about potential captains and a list of potential captains. You know, Tiger, has been pretty clear.

End of an Era as Tiger Woods, Nike Part Ways

‘I think we all know that he can be pretty focused, and that’s one of his many superpowers – that ability to tunnel and decide. And he doesn’t do anything that he’s not fully committed to, and we totally respect that. And he’s got a lot on his plate right now. He’s very active, obviously, on the PGA Tour side of things (in their negotiations with the Saudi Arabian backers of the LIV circuit).

‘We want to give him and the committee space to decide how it plays out. You know, everybody sort of has a timeline for this, and I realise it’s a news day and you guys want news, but we have picked captains later than this. We’ve picked captains earlier than this.

‘Luke Donald was named a year out a year ago (ahead of Europe’s crushing victory in Rome in 2023) and they had a pretty good performance, for instance.

Highlighting the ”damage” that has been caused by the hostilities between LIV and the PGA Tour, Waugh said: ‘I’m a very optimistic type and I’m sort of hoping it’s darkest before dawn, if you will, but I think the best thing for the game is a deal. And we’ve been very consistent on that front.

‘I don’t think the game is big enough for two tours like that and I think we are diluting the game in a way that is not healthy. We’ve said that, really, from the beginning. I hope there’s a deal.

Japanese boxer Naoya Inoue has been one of the most dominant boxers in the world over the last decades but he has only dominated in some of the lightest weight classes. He is a two-division undisputed champion of both the Banthamweight and Super Benthamweight divisions. Last Monday, he defeated Mexican Luis Nery after he got dropped early in the fight. Getting dropped by ‘Pantera’ was a wake up call for Inoue that got him to deliver one of the most dominating performances of his career. Such dominance invites anybody to speculate on Inoues chances against other great boxers from slightly heavier weight classes. We are specifically talking about Gervonta Davis, who is the current king of the Super Featherweight and Lightweight divisions.

There is always a frowned upon aspect of fighters from lower weight classes moving up to heavier tend to have a much harder time to win fights against their opponents. Inoue moving up a weight lass or two means he will finally get to challenge himself after dominating his usual weight classes. A perfect example of this is Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who decided to risk it by moving up to Light Heavyweight to fight Dmitry Bivol and really struggled to keep himself composed. For Inoue, the challenge would be ultimate considering he is fighting Gervonta Davis, one of the scariest boxers in recent years. Boxing trainer Virgil Hunter is the on who speculated on Inoue’s next steps for his career.

Gervonta Davis knocks his sparring partner halfway out of the ring and gets out himself to mock him

Speaking to Fight Hype, Hunter said: “I don’t think Gervonta [Davis] should go below 135. I’m sure Inoue walks around at ’40, ’45 – 145. [Inoue would] have to come up just like everybody else. Where is the value of [Davis] coming to a catchweight to fight you? You’re big in Japan, and I’m big in the States. So there should not be any weight concession. ‘If you want to fight, come and fight me.’ Let’s not make any excuses. Rigondeaux fought Lomachenko; there was no catchweight involved. He dared to take that opportunity. [Rigondeaux] came up short, but he dared to take it. Charlo dared to fight Canelo at 168, coming from 154. So it’s only a few pounds north. You’re getting a little older. I’m sure you could carry the weight comfortably. So I wouldn’t make any concessions for that fight.”

Mike Tyson thinks Tyson Fury will beat Oleksandr Usyk when they clash for the undisputed world championship this weekend.

The two best heavyweights in boxing will battle it out for the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF belts at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.

Opinions are split on who will win the fight and become the first-ever four-belt heavyweight champion, but ‘Iron Mike’ is backing his namesake to emerge victoriously.

Anthony Joshua is highly unlikely to fight the winner of Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk in 2024 due to a rematch clause between the latter two fighters.

Ukrainian champion goes into the unifying title bout against Briton Fury motivated to fight for his war-torn country.

Oleksandr Usyk may be the reigning WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight world champion but to many the Ukrainian is the underdog going into his long-awaited unifying title fight with Tyson Fury in Riyadh on Saturday.

Size matters, it seems, with southpaw Usyk conceding 15 centimetres (6 inches) in height to the 2.06-metre (6 foot 9 inch) Fury, 18cm in reach, and close to 22kg (49lbs) in weight.

And yet, he is not perturbed.

“To win this, I don’t need to be heavy, I need to be fast, and quick,” he told The Ring magazine in February just before the Fury fight was postponed after the Briton picked up a cut in training.

His perfect record of 21 wins and no defeats as a pro, 14 of those inside the distance, speaks for itself.

And apart from those three heavyweight belts, he can also look back on a career that brought him Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the undisputed cruiserweight championship of the world.

Beyond the undoubted pedigree in the ring, he also has the fire within that a boxer desperately needs when he has reached the comfort of the mountain top.

‘Usyk is not fighting for himself’

The war in Ukraine, which followed Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has ensured that.

It gave Usyk an extra dimension when he faced Anthony Joshua in Jeddah in August that year, almost a year after he had taken the Briton’s titles in London.

“In the ninth round I realised that if I fall now, the spirit of the fighters who defend our country will also fall,” he told AFP news agency.

“I didn’t box for myself, I boxed for all those who defend the country.”

Eighteen months on from that fight and the Russians continue to wage war on Ukraine, adding fuel to the Usyk fire.
