Will the PGA Tour and PIF merger ever become a reality? In the past week, two independent directors have resigned from the PGA Tour policy board. Four days ago, the architect of the PGA Tour and PIF negotiation, Jimmy Dunes left the policy board as his idea probably didn’t align with what Commissioner Jay Monahan and Vice Chairman, Tiger Woods proposed.

Dunes cited the stagnant growth in the PIF-PGA Tour merger and the majority of players on directors being on board as the reason for his resignation. He said, “Since the players now outnumber the independent directors on the board and no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF I feel like my vote and my role is utterly superfluous.”

However, unlike Dunes, Flaherty didn’t disclose the reason behind his resignation. But he was appreciative of the 4 and a half years spent as an independent director and showed gratitude towards Jay Monahan for his leadership, The news of Flaherty leaving the PGA Tour policy board was shared on X by NBC writer, Rex Hoggard. Flaherty said in the letter as NBC reported, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve on the policy board for the past 4 ½ years. Golf has always been a significant part of my life. Being able to blend my passion for the sport with the intricate workings and growth of the PGA Tour has been a truly rewarding experience.”

With Flaherty out of the PGA Tour policy board, now only three independent directors including Joe Gorder, Mary Meeker, and chairman Ed Herlihy remain on the policy board. The independent directors vote now is in the minority as six players directors, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson remain on the policy board.

Tiger Woods Joins PGA Tour Policy Board As Monahan Moves To Regain Players' Trust

The Monahan-led PGA Tour’s policy board has been shattering apart, and with no PGA Tour and PIF merger in sight, it leaves the golf world wondering if it would ever be finalized. Although there has not been any particular update regarding the $3 billion merger, the vice chairman, Woods says that there has been progress made.

Tiger Woods says the negotiation with PIF is ‘fluid’

On Tuesday of the PGA Championship, Tiger Woods addressed the reporters and gave an insight into what’s going on behind the closed curtains between PGA Tour and PIF. Unlike Jimmy Dunes’ statement that there has been no progress in the merger, Woods explained, “It’s ongoing, it’s fluid. It changes day-to-day.”

Simone Biles came out on top at her first gymnastics meet of the season, and her husband was there to see it all.

The Chicago Bears safety was seen proudly cheering on his Olympics gold medalist wife from the stands, rising to his feet following her stellar vault performance.

When asked about her husband’s presence at the meet, Biles told NBC News, “I think this one was a huge thing for him because he hasn’t been in a while.”

“But to hear those girls scream as loud as the fans in the football field, I think it’s something new,” she continued, laughing. “So it’s really exciting to be in both atmospheres.”

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has once again taken aim at Floyd Mayweather after the boxing legend claimed that Davis’ upcoming fight against Frank Martin had been cancelled, stirring up both ‘Tank’ and his fans. Davis has held the WBA title since his 2019 knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa after moving up to lightweight.

Recently, he was promoted to full champion status following Devin Haney‘s move up in weight and vacating the WBA (Super) belt.

After a prolonged absence from the ring, largely due to awaiting a WBA decision, Davis is set to return and defend his title for the first time against the undefeated Frank Martin next month.

On the other hand, Mayweather was preparing for his own return in an exhibition match, more than a year after his chaotic bout against John Gotti III.

He was expected to announce a fight against Victor Ortiz, a former opponent, but his failure to show up at the press conference cast doubt on the event.

Davis took to Instagram to comment on Mayweather’s no-show, accusing him of scamming and taking people’s money.

Mayweather then responded by claiming that the Davis-Martin fight had been cancelled. Davis fired back with a vehement post, calling Mayweather a ‘hater’ and asserting his control.

“This is sad, hopefully this is just a rumour,” Mayweather said.

Davis responded: “This n***a such a hater. He said some s**t cancel and that’s not true! N***A THIS MY S**T NOW! Keep talking and I’ll pull up to your house now and lay hands on you and some other s**t!”

After a heated press conference this past Thursday at AT&T Stadium for his fight against Mike Tyson, Jake Paul appears to have faced an even more dire situation.

Paul posted a video on Instagram saying that his private jet was struck by lightning during his flight home from Arlington, Texas.

Paul and Tyson were promoting their July 20th fight, which will be the first combat sports event streamed live on Netflix. It was the second press conference of the week after an event on Monday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Monday’s presser was a cordial affair, for the most part. Tyson gave a candid assessment of how he’s feeling during training by revealing, “I’m doing great but my body is s–t right now, I’m sore, I’m really sore.” Paul didn’t go too far with his trash talk, simply saying that he believes he hits harder than the former heavyweight champion.

However, tensions were high during Thursday’s press conference. Paul was engaging with a hostile crowd at AT&T Stadium throughout, and during a back-and-forth with the fans in attendance he declared he plans to “knock this old man the f–k out.” Tyson also threw some shots at the YouTuber, saying, “I’m going to f–k Jake up.”

The fight between Paul and Tyson will feature the largest age gap in professional boxing history, as the legendary heavyweight will be 58 years old when he steps into the ring against the 27-year-old Paul. The fight will be contested over eight two-minute rounds as opposed to the customary 10 three-minute rounds, but the result will count toward both of their professional records.

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has once again gunned for Floyd Mayweather after the pound-for-pound legend claimed that Davis’ upcoming fight against Frank Martin had been cancelled in an attempt to aggravate both ‘Tank’ and his fans.

Davis had held the WBA (Regular) title ever since he moved up to the lightweight division and knocked out Yuriorkis Gamboa back in 2019 but a few months ago the undefeated power-puncher was finally upgraded to full champion, due to Devin Haney’s decision to move up in weight and vacate the WBA (Super) belt.

After over a year away from the ring, much of which was spent waiting on a decision by the WBA, Davis will finally return and defend his title for the first time when he takes on undefeated countryman Martin next month.

Meanwhile, Mayweather was poised to make a comeback of his own and fight in another exhibition over 12 months since his last event against John Gotti III – which ended in chaos.

‘Money’ was scheduled to announce a bout against Victor Ortiz, whom he controversially beat during his professional career, but Mayweather failed to turn up to the press conference, casting doubt as to whether the event will go ahead.

On his Instagram, Davis reacted to the news of Mayweather’s absence, which has reportedly cost the CDMX Government $1 million.

“He is out here scamming again. Taking people’s money.”

In response, Mayweather posted that the Davis-Martin card had been cancelled, with Davis replying in a post of his own in which he labelled the 47-year-old as a ‘hater’.

News of Mayweather’s truancy aligns with other rumours shared by Davis, who declared that the veteran is being held hostage in Dubai, after failures to compete in the five exhibition bouts that he had planned in 2023 – of which he managed two, as reported by talkSPORT.

“N***a says all this bulls***, but [he’s] in Dubai and can’t leave because he’s been taking n***as’ money and not doing what they paid him to do. N***a a f***ing hater.”

“He gotta pay people that money back. If I’m lying tell him to go live right now. He’s been stuck over there for a minute too.”

Regardless of Mayweather’s comments, Davis-Martin will go ahead on June 15th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, topping a bill that also features fan-favourite David Benavidez – who will debut at 175lbs against Oleksandr Gvozdyk after frustrations at Canelo’s unwillingness to face him at super-middleweight.

Anthony Joshua, a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, is convinced Oleksandr Usyk had beaten Tyson Fury in their undisputed heavyweight bout on Saturday.

Usyk won via split decision in Saudi Arabia, adding the WBC heavyweight belt to the IBF, WBO, and WBA titles he initially took from Joshua in 2021.

Although Fury led on two judges’ scorecards after eight rounds, Usyk’s powerful overhand left in the ninth round and a series of unanswered punches forced Fury to take a standing count.

Despite all three judges scoring the final round in Fury’s favour, it was too late, as Usyk won with scores of 115-112 and 114-113 on two cards.

Joshua, seated ringside alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, watched as Usyk handed Fury the first loss of his professional career in a thrilling fight.

Moments after the final bell, Joshua told TNT Sports that he believed Usyk had won. When asked who he thought was victorious, he immediately replied, “Usyk.” Upon being met with surprise, Joshua responded, “Huh, who do you think?”

In an interview with iFL TV, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn shared Joshua’s perspective: “He [Joshua] thought Usyk won. I asked him, ‘What do you think?’ and he said, ‘Usyk won it easy’. I had it quite close, but he was adamant.”

When asked if Usyk’s win over Fury would affect Joshua’s plans, Hearn replied, “Not really. We want to regain the world heavyweight title, so whoever has it has it. The rematch is a big fight, likely set for October. We have to work on our plans, potentially at Wembley, and see what happens on June 1.”

The upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics are quickly approaching, and for American female gymnasts like Simone Biles, a global superstar, the Core Hydration Classic on Saturday marks their initial effort in securing a spot at the Summer Games.

Simone Biles commences journey toward Paris at Core Hydration Classic event.

Incredibly, three Olympic all-around champions will be part of the field for the very first time, as Gabby Douglas and Sunisa Lee – who earned gold in 2012 and 2021 respectively – join Simone Biles at the competition in Hartford, Connecticut.

In the last time these three ladies went up against each other eight years ago at the national championships, Biles came out on top while Douglas finished fourth and Lee was in 10th place in the juniors.

Since then, all three women have achieved significant success but have encountered their own challenges, adding a sense of comeback to their quest for qualification for the Paris Olympics.

Despite the intense competition, Biles is still the main draw. She stepped back from several events at the Tokyo Games due to what doctors call “the twisties” – a psychological barrier that causes a gymnast to lose track of their position during flight. However, Biles is now determined to add to her collection of seven Olympic medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Biles earned a bronze in the balance beam in Tokyo but took a break from gymnastics after the Games before returning to the sport last year. Since her return, she’s won four gold medals, along with a silver, at the world championships and surpassed Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo’s record of 33 overall medals in both the Olympics and world championships.

Now, Biles begins the process of qualifying for the Paris Olympics at the Core Hydration Classic. The last chance to secure a spot is at the national championships in June, where the top performers will be selected for the Olympic Trials.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Douglas, on the other hand, is making her second competitive appearance since the 2016 Rio Olympics, ten months after announcing her return to the sport. Douglas began missing gymnastics after watching the US national championships in 2022 and decided to resume training. “Now I can’t believe I’m in this sport again,” she told NBC News Now.

Lee has also taken extended periods away from the gym since her Olympic win three years ago. She faced the threat of kidney disease, but treatment enabled her to manage the condition and aim for Paris.

Biles has been an inspiration for Lee, who shared her thoughts with Reuters last month. “She’s a very open person about her mental health,” Lee said, “and she’s helped me become more open about my own mental health journey.”

The 15-time major champion’s time on leaderboards is coming to end, but he’s helping shape the game’s future

Tiger Woods has always played to win. Since turning professional in 1996, he has won 82 tournaments, including 15 major championships. Perhaps, more astonishing than the victories and majors is the 142-event made cut streak that lasted over a seven-year period from 1998 to 2005, when he was the most dominant golfer that the game has ever seen.

Woods never said he was the greatest. He didn’t need to. “There is no sense in going to a tournament if you don’t believe that you can win it,” he once said.

Yet, coming into the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Woods was circumspect about his chances of hoisting his fifth Wanamaker Trophy. Asked about the state of his game, he admitted that he was rusty and that the barrage of injuries had taken a toll on his body. “I can still hit shots,” he said on Tuesday. “It’s getting around is more of the difficulty that I face day-to-day and the recovery of pushing myself either in practice or in competition days.”

PGA Championship projected cut: Tiger Woods in danger at Valhalla

When the tournament began on Thursday, Woods, who was making his 23rd appearance in the PGA Championship, performed like the part-time player that he has become over the last several years. On his way to a 1-over par 72, the 48-year-old World Golf Hall of Famer hit a smattering of good shots but hardly kept pace in a first round that saw a record 64 players shoot under par scores.

“It’s just the competitive flow,” he said after the round. “It took me probably three holes to get back into competitive flow again and get a feel for hitting the ball out there in competition, adrenaline, temperatures, green speeds. These are all things that normally I adjust to very quickly, and it just took me a few holes to get into it.”

By Friday afternoon, the tournament had been temporarily upstaged by the early morning arrest of Scottie Scheffler, the game’s No. 1 ranked player, for allegedly disobeying a police officer’s order at the entrance to the Valhalla Golf Club. Looking invincible like the Woods of old, Scheffler settled down after the shock of being handcuffed and hauled off to jail to shoot a 5-under par 66 to go into the weekend with a chance to win his second major of the year after taking the Masters last month. As Scheffler went off to answer questions about spending time in a Louisville holding cell, Woods was starting his round and would need a good one to avoid missing just his 15th cut in 93 major appearances.

Starting his second round two shots off the projected cut of 1 under par, Woods went seven over par in his first four holes to guarantee that he would miss the cut. It’s hard to imagine a worst scenario for a player already battling competitive rust and old age in a game dominated by much younger players. Here he was looking ahead to the next tournament, the next opportunity to show that he could still play at next month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst, but stuck for five hours on a golf course where he had solidified his legend 24 years earlier in an epic duel with Bob May at the 2000 PGA Championship.

Tiger Woods Friday live updates at 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla

Back then when Woods was in the morning of his career, he turned the Jack Nicklaus-designed Valhalla Golf Club into a theater with a two-act play and May as his benevolent antagonist. In the final round in 2000, they matched each other shot for shot, creating a drama unprecedented in televised golf history. Then in the three-hole aggregate playoff, Woods survived to win by one stroke. That victory at Valhalla was the third leg of the Tiger Slam, which climaxed when Woods won the 2001 Masters.

Round 11

Usyk continues to land the cleaner, more effective shots. Both fighters clearly gassed with three minutes to go. Can the former cruiserweight champion close the show to hand Fury the first defeat of his professional career? The Gypsy King has rebounded admirably from the ninth-round abyss, but he almost definitely needs a knockout to keep his belts.

Guardian’s unofficial score: Fury 9-10 Usyk (Fury 102-106 Usyk)

Fury has 60 seconds to recover from that battering. Can he survive this round? Fury could have easily been stopped that last round, but the third man Nelson did well to measure the occasion of the moment. Usyk is not pressing the issue, giving Fury precious space to recover. Usyk scoring with sparing overhand lefts, consistently. Usyk did enough there to win the round on activity, but it might go down as a fatal mistake after he gave Fury three minutes to recover from the brink of defeat.

Usyk then moved up to heavyweight, where he twice defeated Anthony Joshua to claim his current titles. Most recently, Usyk defended his belts with a ninth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois this past August.
