Luis Nery is challenging for the undisputed titles, with Buster Douglas as his inspiration for success.
Nery takes on Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue on May 6 in a huge challenge for the undisputed super-bantamweight world titles at the Tokyo Dome on his rival’s home soil.
Inoue is considered one of the best fighters in the sport at the moment, a pound-for-pound great, with the challenger having a huge uphill task to navigate on away soil.
But two-weight world champion Nery, has been left inspired by Buster Douglas’ monumental upset win over heavyweight Mike Tyson in February 1990, which happened at that very same arena.

“This is the highest stage one can reach as a fighter,” he said. “It’s like soccer players who prepare their entire lives for a World Cup.
“It’s the same. This is bigger than being a world champion. It’s four belts. It’s undisputed.
“I think that Inoue shouldn’t have taken this fight. I have nothing to lose. I’m not a champion.
“I’m not at the top like him. I’m going for all the marbles. I’m coming with everything. I will take risks, and I’m willing to die in the ring.
“This is an important fight. It deserves to be in an arena that is just as important like the Tokyo Dome. And I think it’s a sign. If Mike Tyson can lose his unbeaten record there, then so can Naoya Inoue.
“Now, Mike Tyson was actually a monster. He for sure was an assassin. So, I’m happy that they made the fight at Tokyo Dome.”

“I will win by knockout. There’s no other way. I know that either he or I will be stopped. But I’m sure that he will be stopped.”
‘The Monster’ has yet to be defeated in his 26 fights, and his record has a resemblance to that of Tyson at the time, who went into his clash with Douglas with 37 wins undefeated.
Tyson had marched to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion aged 20, and was huge favourite to win in his debut in Japan.
But Douglas came in as a huge underdog and stopped the legend in the tenth, knocking him down for the first time in his career and leaving him unable to make the referee’s count.

Equally, Nery could inflict a simply sensational toppling of the dominant fighter, who currently looks invincible.
The Mexican has just lost once in his own time in the professional ranks in a narrow loss to Brandon Figueroa in May 2021, but is training to launch his name into the boxing stratosphere forever.
